It would seem that whatever had passed over the island had once again been forced to pause at Cal, tilt its head, scratch at it a little, and then move on, barred by some technicality that was working in Cal's favor without him even knowing it. This was actually incredibly fortuitous, because if it hadn't been for his chromosomes (just as, in the past, it hadn't been for his plumbing), he might have been stuck with having to explain why he was as traumatized, if not more so, than some of the girls on the island.

And it was a good thing, too, because he'd had enough of that sort of trauma in his life, thanks, and, besides, how the hell was he going to get these invitations for Ino's birthday party tomorrow finished if he was stuck in trauma?

He did feel that there was a more manly swagger to his walk than he usually tried to put in it, though.

Sure, he could have probably just sent an email, but he still wasn't that keen on computer.

After spending several hours attempting to get gum out of his hair and patch up one of the world's worst bloody noses, Cal realized that, as far as the hair went, it was futile, and there was only one solution.

"I just need a hair cut."

"Oh, hello!" Somehow, Cal managed to find the tolerance for the cheerful demeanor of the woman at Theodoric's. "Are you sure? Why not a nice nail treatment? Pedicure? Full body massage and facial?"

"Just a haircut."

"Oh, we can do some nice highlights. And you've got to try the seaweed wrap."

Cal stared at the woman, just for a moment.

"I have gum in my hair," he said, pointedly. "I just need a haircut."

"Don't get pushy. For all I know, you could have wanted it that way. Who knows with kids these days? Now you just have a seat and we'll get that Fabio hair taken care of right away; you just don't have the build to pull it o-- Oh, my lord, these split ends! What do you do, chew on them?"

"Actually, yeah. I do."

"...there's a five dollar gum-in-hair surcharge, just so you know."

"Whatever, just cut it."

Here it was. Back in the old haunt. Cal was pleased to find that not much at all had changed about good old Luke's, right down to the guys in the kitchen heckling him (over his hair, for the most part) and the occasional squirrel trying to sneak in. It felt good to be back, and he still found a nice stock of Faygo still hanging around, meaning he was pretty much set for the rest of the day.

And since it was his first day back, he figured that the specials board would have to boast the things that he felt really rounded out his diner culinary experience.

It might have been just of nervousness that Cal got to the coffee shop early, nervousness over a conglomeration of things from the play to this meeting to building sexually explicit chimeras in class. Of course this whole thing with meeting with Eleanor was under the pretense of newspaper business, but he knew that newspapers would likely be the last thing on his mind, and he felt that racing, dizzying feeling again like maybe he needed to step back and crawl into a hole for a little while, still not ready for this charging dash into human (scratch that, female) contact that his body seemed to rush into with the permission of his lagging, lethargic mind and soul.

Just talk about the newspaper, and he should be fine, right?

Knowing nothing at all about tea, Cal just sat at a table, playing with sugar packets until Eleanor arrived.

The chairs had moved. In fact, half the store had moved.

Overnight, things seemed to have shifted from right to left, leaving the right hand lower corner of the store open, empty of everything but the chairs and the fishbowl.

Which now sat on a bookshelf, the fish happily staring down at Hercules, who looked up at the greater height with annoyance.

"Just wait, Herc, you'll get bigger, and then what am I gonna do?" Aphrodite grinned down as she paused in her work. "I'll have to get bigger bookcases."

Then she happily continued hanging three new paintings on the wall.

With a slight sigh, Cal looked around the diner, thinking to himself that it was a lot better than the last time he'd looked around his father's diner, considering that it was burning down while deadly riots raged outside its smashed windows. Then again, it wasn't really his last day, since Lacey promised him a spot when he got back, but that wasn't the point. He was having a moment here. So it was with an ironic heart that he put up his specials board for the day:

Penelope decided that she was going to give free drinks to seniors. She just was. She told Tino this too so if he served any seniors, he was not to charge them. And they weren't exactly free as she was going to be keeping a tab only to pay it herself at the end of her shift.

She wasn't a senior, she knew, but she was drinking. She was a bit put out about her roommate leaving so it seemed the thing to do.

The band was playing Journey tonight which she thought pretty decent of them.

It was Claire's last day in the shop.

Well, this sucked.

She tucked a goodbye note for Ben with a little sketch of him into the cash register, then kept herself busy -- sorting clothes, shelving books, tidying up the monkey display -- and was weirdly torn between wanting the day to be over and wanting it to last forever.

Cal was spending a lot of his time at the diner toward just leaning forward on the counter and getting lost in his thoughts, nursing a bottle of pop. It wouldn't have been the first time since Wednesday that he was really wondering why he'd bothered telling Dinah about himself. He didn't have to. The only qualifications for having to tell anyone involved a relationship that he and Dinah just didn't have. Well, that, or being persistent like Ino, or in the wrong place at the wrong time like Temari...

He wondered if something unconscious was at work here, but he wasn't really sure he felt that way, or maybe he did and just didn't realize it because he was happy with Claire.

For at least a few more weeks, anyway.

And maybe that was it. Maybe he was unconsciously setting himself up for something, but, at the same time, as he thought about summer, he couldn't think of himself staying here. His mind was elsewhere, on brightly colored church domes in Turkey...

A Victorian dollhouse had come in with the most recent batch of new old stuff, and Claire decided to use it as inspiration to redo the front window. She carefully arranged the tiny dusty furniture and the tiny dusty family, taking a moment to nab handkerchiefs to cover the worst of the linens. The mother went in the parlor, the father in the music room, the children in the attic playroom and the baby in the tiny cradle.

When she was done, she put it on a table facing the street, with vintage children's books open to cool illustrations making up the rest of the display. She was pleased with the way it came out.

Now, the shop just needed a few customers...

Just another day at the diner, really, where Cal came in, spent some time getting all of his Greek specialties around, and then spent the rest of the time reading a book or futilely trying to think of an article for the newspaper. He wondered if Rikku could kick him out, on grounds of being a lazy asshole who never wrote anything. He wondered if that was just a mere glimpse into what the future held for him.

Well, at least he knew he could do some things. He could create art, as what was on display today. He'd found the sign he'd made Wednesday, and decided that made a much better specials board then just a short list of Greek stuff.

Mina Harker wasn't particularly fond of children. However, given the alternatives, it seemed a great idea to put them through a bit of culture. Her equal partner in all of this was, of course, the most proper lady she knew of in town: Miss Elizabeth Bennet.

Together, they organized the tables (with extra tiny chairs not just for the children, but if any of the young ones had brought along Mr. Bear to enjoy the event), the tea (of all sorts), and the assorted other bits (scones, crumpets, jam, little cucumber sandwiches and the like).

They also had some rather cheap (they were messy child types, so it made sense not to make them too extravagant) gloves for the little girls, so that they could enjoy the tea properly.

If anyone acted up too much, well, there was Mina Harker on the premises.

So far, 19* was treating Claire pretty well, Friday the 13th birthday or no. After bowling in gym class, she'd talked her mother out of opening the UCLA envelope that had come for Claire and into forwarding it to her at school, then she'd gotten a box of gifts from her family. She wore the scarf David had sent her around her neck as she picked Cal up at the diner, and she had to admit the sign made her feel pretty special.

Of course, she couldn't just tell him that and leave it there.

"If you make the mariachi guys sing to me, I'll stab you with a spoon," she lovingly informed him as they were shown to their seats.

[OOC: *I think Claire's several months older than she should be, but 3/13/83 is the birthdate in her obituary, so canon is canon, even if the writers ignored her grade and how old she implied she was onscreen in picking it. So, Cal really shouldn't have been surprised that something like his girlfriend's birthday would align with Friday the Thirteenth. Not that he was a particularly superstitious guy or anything, but he was already slightly nervous about the whole thing, which was stupid. It was just dinner, right? Forget the fact that he'd promised to make something for Claire and had to bear the brunt of possibly embarrassing himself immensely by finishing up that story and having it ready for her. It was a good story, though; he just hoped it wasn't too cheesy.

He did have a back-up, too, which caused him to spend a bit more time than usual in the kitchen, trying to throw together a little birthday cake for her. The food worked really well last time, so he figured it couldn't hurt.

Once Claire had disentangled herself from Chuck, Temari and Francine in a scene still being played, she went to her room to shower and put on clothes that were not covered in squashed M&Ms.

Work, she supposed, called, and, in the end, she was only an hour or so late. Maybe more like two hours.

She shook her head at the boarded-up window when she got in, and, taking note of Ben's attempt to post pictures of the inside of the store, started to work with an old Polaroid that still had several shots worth of film in it. She added her attempts at artistic close-ups of certain vintage items to what was becoming quite a mural on the boarded window.

[[ no OCD as I've had a craptastic day. Distractions are encouraged, because, OMG, but I might drop off without warning due to super-ungodly plague ;_; ]]

It was previews tonight, so while there was a bit of nervousness, there wasn't the electricity of opening night. There was just the theatre with the chairs set up and the set made to resemble the very town they were in and oh my god they were up to previews.

Geoffrey was like a live wire, a wolf on the hunt, the scent of opening night in his noise and out in his hair and down his spine and he loved it, absolutely loved it.

"We're getting started, folks..."

Crisis temporarily averted but likely to cause a great deal of distress in much later hours, Cal and Claire had made their way to the bowling alley, which reportedly also had arcade games, on the great search for Ms. Pac Man.

Or as Cal had fondly grown to calling it: Claire Needs to Lay Off the Strong Shit.

"Okay," he said, scanning some of the machines. "We're look for a bow?"

[[ for the daaaaaaaaate! But, of course, also open for any bowling and arcade needs! ]]
