First she noticed it while picking up a history book. When she realized that it was a historical romance, Hinata figured that it had just been mis-shelved for some reason and went to put it with the other romances from the same era and thought nothing of it.

She was rather more dubious about her mistake the second time around. Having picked a book on astrology to flip through, Hinata had settled herself at the counter.

Only to find that it was another romance. This time, in space. With a laugh, she put it back where it had originally been.

The third attempt (with a bibliography that she'd read before) led to a romance being in her hands as well, despite the person she'd picked having precious little of that in their life.

With an amused shake of her head--it had to be the island--Hinata settled down with a notepad instead. If she couldn't read, then she'd write.

Yei was racing around the store today and Hinata thought that she was chasing the dust bunnies but wasn't entirely sure of that. She didn't bother to deliberately find out, however, as some things were more entertaining as mysteries and watching Yei be happy was enough to lift her mood slightly.

She tidied up the store and set out tea for any visitors that might come by, and then settled in to continue working on her wording of a letter. Some things, truly, had to be phrased just so.

It was a quietly thoughtful Hinata that came to work today, with Yei quite content to be a sleepy little bundle of fur in her arms as she entered the shop. Blinking to adjust her eyes to being inside, Hinata set Yei down on one of the comfortable chairs, which earned her a half-open eye and a mew.

Hinata smiled and went about opening the shop. Perhaps she'd clean, she thought, as there was rarely something better to do when she was in a mood such as this. Yes, cleaning would do quite nicely, she decided, and went to fetch the supplies for that.

Alex had woken up to some rambling text message from Dean Stinson about seizing the day and taking advantage of the warm weather to set up something for everyone down on the beach. When he'd become the dean's lackey, he didn't know but he actually got to it. It wasn't his money he was spending, after all. The first thing he'd done was plaster signs announcing the luau all over the dorms and town to let people know it was happening.

So, after a few quick hours of setup, the beach was now looking like a real luau was taking place. Tiki torches led the way to the beach, doing their best to provide lighting when the sun fell and to keep bugs away. Several tiki bars were laid out across an area of the beach, serving up drinks (yes, there was alcohol since adults were invited) and even conversation to those that might want it.

Palm trees with string lights had also been set up to make the luau more authentic. And, of course, there were several tables containing all sorts of moddable food for the partygoers to enjoy.

The weather was amazing and the luau was on!

Ender listened to radio every day, despite the large amount of mostly apocryphal information it provided. It wasn't in his nature to pass up on a source of information. As such, he'd managed to come to the conclusion something terrible had happened while Karla was gone.

And that she was grieving about something. He wasn't sure his presence would be the most comforting thing at the moment.

Still, it meant he was burying himself less in his work than he had been a few days ago. The sun was shining outside, which made it a little harder to dwell on anything, too. In the end, he might have even spent some time sitting on the steps of the store, looking up at the sky, and thinking.

There was something soothing about the quiet of the store, Hinata was of the opinion, and that made it feel a bit like a safe haven every week when she came in. After all, the worst that had ever happened to her while working was an argument and that, really, was nothing at all to complain about. Setting out cookies and beginning the tea so that it would be nicely steeped by the time she was done opening the till and sweeping the floor, Hinata was smiling as she worked.

It was--nice, having a peaceful occupation.

Yei, as if in response to all that peace, was curled up in a weetiny ball on one of the chairs and looking blissfully asleep.

Hinata was… pretty certain that she was done all of her shopping for the year. But pretty certain wasn't one hundred percent certain and that meant she had a list of names and what she'd wanted to get for them out in front of her as she went down it carefully and crossed off those she knew she'd gotten.

The list would, obviously, be hidden ninja-quick should anyone enter the store.

For her part, Yei was ripping around like only a weetiny kitten could playing what seemed to be an elaborate game of tag with the dust bunnies.

Hinata knew she should shoo the bunnies out but that would make Yei sad and it wasn't hurting anyone, was it?

It was a… relatively rare thing to find Hinata willingly on the phone, truly. It was an even rarer thing for her to be doing it without a single drop of nervousness showing, but that was what she was doing today, while patiently navigating her way through connections and transfers that would, in theory, eventually wind up with her finding out what she wanted to know.

Yei, for her part, was miffed that Mommy wasn't paying attention to her. How dare she?!?!

The kittenish indignation fled the moment Mommy flung a catnip mouse that jiggled appealingly in her direction and Yei was off after it like a fierce fierce hunter! She'd show that mouse!!! She'd show it GOOD.

And Hinata smiled and went back to her patient questions on the phone.

Hinata was well aware that the holidays for this world were approaching--the largest, most consuming holidays, though the one they'd just had came close in her opinion--and that meant she was idly beginning her search for gifts but was in no rush.

It was something to do while Yei darted around the store like a Fierce Adventurer and her attention kept straying to a letter she'd written but not sent. More thought, for that, was required, because once she'd taken the first step…

Well, the game would have to be played.

Kittens, Hinata was fairly sure, were not supposed to make friends with dust bunnies. Chase them, of course. Pounce, roll, and fling themselves were all par for the course. But, as she knelt down and peered under one of the shelves only to be confronted with her kitten, sleeping, curled up with several dust bunnies and all of them content...

What else was she to call it, but friendship?

Smiling slightly—better to think about her cat and Yei’s unlikely friendship, than about family... which was, due to the holiday, just a bit harder to not dwell on—Hinata got up and went about opening the shop.

It was a far more comfortable week so far and Hinata was pleased, in her own quiet way, about that as Yei ran through the store, chasing dust bunnies and she set out tea in case any customers (or visitors) would care for some.

Then, as she didn’t feel like reading the day away, she decided it would be a good time to clean the store. Just to keep herself entertained.

... And some of those dust bunnies did need to be eliminated, it was true.

Jessica wasn't entirely sure coming to work was a good idea the way she'd been feeling. Being horny was one thing, but even if she could find a cute and willing boy, she didn't think she could trust herself not to bite him. And then Sookie would get all mad at her again.

She was even eyeing Tino with appreciation. He, on the other hand, was keeping his distance.

Like most of her shifts at the bookstore, Hinata was fairly certain that today would be a quiet day.

Which was, quite honestly, perfectly suited to her mood—which was a bit off and a bit quieter than normal as she allowed Yei full run of the store and very deliberately stayed out of the romance novels.

They were full of things she was not inclined to give more thought to. Truly.

Hinata was well content when she came into the store today, despite her worry over Warren. (She liked her roommate to be happy, okay? And he wasn't. It was worrisome.)

And being content had the peculiar reaction of her feeling guilty for being so which made little sense but was, nonetheless, was true.

Yei purred against her ankles and Hinata scooped the kitten up to cuddle her for a bit before taking her usual spot behind the counter and attempting to tell herself that it was entirely okay to be a little bit content while other people weren’t.

... That wasn’t going so well, exactly.

It was a fairly warm evening and Hinata knew that, with winter approaching, there wouldn't be too many more evenings where it was so nice. She'd left Yei back in her room, no doubt being a comforting nuisance in Warren's direction because he'd been… out-of-sorts for most of the day.

Hinata was relatively sure that, even if Yei could not solve what was bothering him—and she didn't know because she hadn't wanted to pry—her small white kitten would be able to lift his spirits at least a bit.

Shaking her head and determined not to dwell over much on what she couldn't help with, Hinata took a deep breath and let it out in a sigh. The park was peaceful tonight. Not too hot, but quite comfortable, and the tea she'd bought at the Perk only served to add to the feeling of peace that had wound its way through the tranquil paths of the Park where she walked.

Even though it was daytime, the "dolphins in space" theme had been carried over to the brunch. The mural was nowhere to be found, but inside the tent that had been set up to give everyone a shady place to gather, there were silver and blue metallic streamers and balloons hung up, and each of the tables had a blue flower arrangement on it.

There were no fish to be found though, unless you counted what could be on the food table. Honestly, that might not really be fish either.

Hinata could hardly be blamed for not wishing to come to work today, could she? It was, however, a job and she'd have felt terribly guilty if she'd not come in.

Which meant that: she was in, and Yei was in.

And both of them were curled up in one of the chairs (once Hinata had ascertained that the store was clean and in good order).

Only one of them was reading though. This was... probably for the best.

Yesterday had left her in a whimsical mood and Hinata could be found checking the inventory and marking on a separate pad of paper a few books that she was interested in reading from the sounds of the backs of them.

Not, she acknowledged wryly, that the backs of books always corresponded to what was inside of them.

With hope, however...

It was not, perhaps, the most adult thing that she could be doing, all things considered.

But Hinata had been feeling a bit stir-crazy after keeping a low profile for a bit and when the day had dawned bright and clear and Fandom Weirdness free as far as a glance out the window could tell, she had scooped up Yei (who hadn't put up much of a protest, all things considered) and headed out.

Which brought her to the beach and found Hinata sitting in the sand, well above the water line, with her ankles crossed as she blew bubbles into the air.

And laughed softly as Yei tried to play with them only to be quite put-out that they broke on contact.

If you asked Hinata why she was so tired today, she wouldn’t have really been able to give an coherent answer—she’d slept fine, she didn’t have any pressing anxieties on her—and so it was a drowsy Hinata who was content to not ponder the mystery of her exhaustion and just read.

After, of course, setting up tea and putting out cookies.

Hinata felt relieved and more than a bit sheepish when she got to work today. She’d gotten around to calling a few people that she’d needed to and felt better for that even if shame lingered because it had taken her so very long to do so.

At the very least, she thought, watching Yei with fondness, she’d be able to breathe easier now. She would try not to focus on what she should’ve done and, instead, focus on the future.

There were times when Hinata was grateful that Yei did not appear to remember too much of certain things. True, she had wandered around the closet plaintively last night, wondering where The Fish had gone—and The Fish had never gotten a name, which left Hinata feeling vaguely guilty in an odd way even though the assignment was over—but overall, by the time morning had rolled around, Yei seemed to have forgotten about The Fish entirely.

Hinata could only be glad.

That meant, when Yei knocked over a stack of books that she’d been planning on sorting through, Hinata just sighed.

Yei was far too interested in The Fish.

Hinata was not particularly surprised by that. She was simply grateful that while they were at work, she did not have to worry about The Fish being eaten. Hinata had no wish to explain to Professor Aquaman that her school assignment had been eaten by a cat.

After all, what kind of parent would that make her?

Probably, Hinata thought ruefully, not a very good one.

This week, Hinata decided, was so far much better than the last week.

For one, Hayley was safe, and for another there was very little else to worry about at the moment. The inevitable phone call she would surely have to make to her father to explain her behaviour, for one.

But even that did not bother her as much as it could—it was difficult to be overly bothered when she felt utterly justified in her actions.

So it was a happy girl and her purring kitten taking care of the shop today.

Hayley didn't believe in park benches. Well, not like one needed to believe in them, like if you didn't they'd all cease to exist and everyone would have to clap their hands to revive benches back into the world. But right now, Hayley preferred the soft feel of the grass against the back of her head, her arms, her legs. Lying back against the grass in a t-shirt and shorts, she read from a mainland newspaper in the classifieds. She needed to find an apartment, and fast.

Eventually she shut the newspaper and just looked up into the sky. Her face was a bit sore, as were her wrists, but there was something just joyous in feeling free. Free and safe.

Yei, at least, was well behaved enough here.

But the rest of the store was one giant distraction. Dust on the window sills? She had to clean it up! A book out of order? Well, that had to be fixed! A customer? Talking and asking about what else they were reading was simply good customer service, was it not?

As people began to arrive, they would notice decorations lining the tiled and bright corridors, leading them towards the large auditorium where the dance was being held.

Once inside the auditorium, there were more decorations. Streamers in the colors of summer hung from the rafters and painted the walls. There were fresh flowers in every corner and on every table, bringing fragrance and festiveness to the room. The lights were low in the auditorium, dimmed to provide both mood and setting to this party in the evening.

There were several long tables stocked full with foods of all kinds and there was even a bar with an expert bartender who'd be happy to serve you. Tips were welcome but not mandatory. The weather was warm and the sky was clear.

Fraser had been busy helping set up since the early morning hours. Apparently, Dean Stinson had gone a little overboard with some of the food, particularly the cake. The huge sheet cake arrived via truck and, where Fraser thought he'd be able to carry it, ended up having to use a forklift to get it to the park. From there, it took several people to lift the cake onto a table of its own. It was that big. Fraser hoped everyone enjoyed and hoped everyone was prepared to take a lot of cake home.

There were also several other tables of food and drinks, ready to be enjoyed. There were tables and chairs situated around the park, covered by tents to keep it from becoming too warm.

And there was cake. Please don't forget the cake.
