Town hall was decked out for homecoming, and there was certainly... a theme. Halloween Under the Sea was definitely a theme that they had come up with.

And it was a theme that was put together by several people not from this universe who didn't know much about Halloween, or what this planet had under its sea.

So there were definitely backdrops of waves lining the walls, and they were decorated with things like fish. Fish that were wearing costumes that had been Googled so that some might have firefighter helmets on, or cat ears. One was very definitely a superhero. Same for the octoroks. And sure, yeah, maybe you had one of these guys on a wall but he was wearing a witch's hat!

There was also plenty of orange and black glitter around, too. Don't worry, they hadn't classed the place up too much.

All things must come to an end - and children needed to return home.

As always, the portal sprung into life somewhere after sundown, emanating a gentle purple, and a simple, inescapable call: come home.

There were children.  There were children everywhere, and at least two of them belonged to Ada Miller and had daddies with a sweet tooth.  And one of them in particular really needed time with Ada.

It was only surprising they hadn't ended up here earlier.

It had been a long couple of days on the road, only for when the Millers pulled up outside the Mississippi town that had hired them to come in, to find the field they normally set-up in full of corn. And doors shut in their faces, when they went asking questions.

Seems the mayor'd run off after writing himself a bunch of checks a few months back, and no one had thought to tell the carnival that'd been scheduled to come in for a week.

Eventually they'd found somewhere else large enough for all of them to set up camp, but the show would not be going on this week. Instead, there'd be repairs to things and the adults frantically trying to rustle up a new show close by so there'd be some income this week. But since things were tense with the locals, Ada'd found herself bundled-up and shipped off to Fandom 'for her own safety.' Which was Chester's way of saying she wasn't putting enough effort into passing as human, lately.

Hence why Ada was sitting in The Perk later in the evening, drinking ridiculous sugary coffee drinks while texting people and trying to decide if she was going to spend her money on a hotel room or 'borrow' blankets from somewhere and set up in their favorite party warehouse for a few days, until she was allowed to go home.

Honestly, it was cold enough that the hotel was winning out, despite the dent it would put in her personal finances. But for now, she was going to take advantage of the light and warmth of the Perk, and have better coffee than anything any of the Millers ever made.

Just when you thought it was time for the island's collective consciousness to maybe move on from the whole sharkicane thing... along came Homecoming! Well, the theme was actually "Under the Sea", but like the Student Council wasn't going to have glitter-encrusted sharks feature heavily in the decorations? Please.

Of course, it wasn't just sharks: there were plenty of glitter-dolphins, and fish, and octopuses octopi octopodes too. Jellyfish-shaped lights hung from the ceiling, and strategically-placed LED projectors were set up to complete the underwater ambiance.

It was, officially, Ada's last day as a resident of Fandom Island.

In the untouched upstairs apartment she had stashed the battered steamer trunk and dufflebag she'd arrived on the island with ages ago, along with her new companion and accessories. She'd finish out this shift, lock up, and catch her portal at the Causeway directly to the Miller family ranch in Arizona.

It was early March at home. She'd have three days to get her trailer dusted off and in working order and her costumes prepped before they had to hit the road.

That was later. This was now, and now had Ada lounging out front of the store again with the sidewalk sale set up.

Demon Marcus was open, and your mermaid was in.

The store was successfully cleaned-out and boarded-up so that renovations could begin, so Ada was spending today stretched-out on the lawn chaise Sparkle had provided, basking in what sunshine peeked out from behind the clouds. She had the big umbrella ready, just in case the rain started, but she wanted to work on her tan, dammit.

The sidewalk sale was set up, and she did have her cash box tucked under the chair, so she'd actually work if people showed up. But for now? She was going to be totally lazy and stretch out like a cat in a sunbeam.

The Demon Marcus Sidewalk Sale was open, and Ada was in!

Sparkle had let Ada pick up a few extra shifts this week since she wanted the paycheck, so here she was at Demon Marcus, with her toolkit and work gloves.

Why sit around when she was perfectly capable of starting repairs to the front of the store herself? Ada'd grown-up building haunted houses and doing repairs to the ranch, putting in some new framing for the front wall wasn't a huge deal, and it would give them something to nail the plywood to so they could prep the space for the major repairs that Sparkle would need a contractor for.

There were a few racks of things out on the sidewalk, and a chair with an umbrella for shade, should Ada choose to take a break, but she'd be spending most of the day in the windows, sweeping out the broken glass, repairing the door frame, and putting in some temporary supports.

Demon Marcus was as open as it could be, and Ada was in.
boneyard_girl: (omgwtfbbq??)
[personal profile] boneyard_girl
Oh. Oh no.

Sparkle had said it was bad, but somehow, Ada hadn't quite been expecting this. So much for all her storm preparation attempts, but to be fair, she didn't think standard hurricanes included flying sharks. Probably.

Oh well. She set her lunch box on what was left of the counter and got to work. Get things off the floor, to start; one rack for things easily salvaged, one for things that could be mended and maybe sold at a discount, and some very, very big trash bins for everything else.

Demon Marcus was... not exactly open? But the mermaid was at work, and if you needed socks or whatever, Ada'd probably just give them to you.
boneyard_girl: (water erases)
[personal profile] boneyard_girl
Apparently there was a hurricane coming.

Ada would be lying if she said she wasn't a little bit concerned about being a mermaid in the path of a hurricane. She'd never been anywhere near a hurricane before...she could ignore the the ocean's song most days, but who knew how loud it would get when the storm kicked up?

So, she wasn't going to lie, by doing her best not to think about that part of it. Instead, she was moving merchandise out of the window displays and trying to figure out how to board up the windows the most effectively.

Arizona had flash-floods, not hurricanes, so she was doing a lot of on-the-fly research on her phone. Huh. Apparently she should check the sump pump in the basement, too...

Demon Marcus was open, but, well, good luck shopping with everything being rearranged to keep stuff away from the walls and windows. Though Ada would ring you up if you did want to buy something.

It had taken over a week, but Ada was finally feeling enough like herself that she could be out in public in her usual attire of a tank-top and dubiously short miniskirt. There was remarkably minimal glitter, however, because she still didn't want to spend quality time touching her scales.

And since it was nice and warm and sunny, she was going to climb into the display windows amidst the mannequins and read in a sun patch until customers showed up. No reason to let the sunshine go to waste.

There was some sort of llama-thing hanging around outside Demon Marcus today. It definitely wasn't the student-one, as it hadn't gotten snooty at Ada for yelling and chasing it out of the back room and into the street.

She'd left the front door propped open to get some fresh air into the shop, and every so often it'd make a move like it was going to come back into the store until it realized Ada was glaring at it, and then would take a few steps to the other side of the door to loiter at the other window.

Their adventure over the weekend had served to get most of Ada's deep unrest out from under her skin, though not all of it, but enough that she was able to focus enough at work to do inventory.

She wasn't sure why there as a giant rack of peach-colored rompers in the men's section, and to be honest, she didn't really care. She was going to grab the most obnoxiously patterned one off the rack, and try to wrangle one of the mannequins into it, because Ada wasn't going to pass up the chance to stick this in the front window for shits and giggles.

Sure, Ada had gone home for a few days just a couple of weeks ago. But without classes to keep her entertained, she was getting... twitchy. Really, really twitchy, and claustrophobic, like the walls were closing in on her.

She'd gotten...better. About walls. Than she had been when she first got here. But Ada had never coped well with 1) boredom or 2) changes she couldn't control (like graduating. aging.) or 3) rainy weather, and it was a thunderstorm day. All that combined? Well, she was practically climbing the walls. When she wasn't contemplating hitting them with something to make herself feel better.

Ada was bored.

No, wait, that wasn't accurate. She'd been home for a few days to drop things off and do some repairs to her trailer, since it had been sitting idle and empty for two years. She'd had plenty of things to do, and she had more than enough little tasks to do here at work to keep her hands busy. There was inventory, and the store could use a good deep-cleaning, and invoice sheets to organize.

Ada was lonely. It had been so nice to be in the middle of the hustle and noise of the carnival, and her family had clearly missed her, but... they weren't as openly affectionate as her friends were. Well, that wasn't fair. They were. They laughed and messed up her hair and told her how much they'd missed her. It was just removed slightly, because they all knew they were going to lose her, just like Marti. And maybe if they held a little bit of their hearts back this time, it wouldn't hurt as bad.

But it had been loud and boisterous and everything Miller, and Fandom was so deadly silent by comparison. It was enough to make a carnie positively twitchy.

Demon Marcus was open, and the mermaid had the music turned up and her dancing shoes on, while she ran around counting inventory. It was better than letting her brain get all spun up over nothing.

It was possible that the strange creatures that had invaded Fandom last week were still on everyone's mind when the Student Council had designed the decorations for Prom. Glittery cardboard animal-hybrid monsters awaited everyone as they arrived to the community center, and made their way inside along a blue and yellow carpet flanked by glowing, glittery red eyes.

Nothing in the decorations looked like a rabbit though. Some memories were just too much to make fun of.

Welcome to Prom, folks!

Thursdays were work days, so Ada was nestled into Demon Marcus with her laptop, Skyping with her family and doing her best to take notes on their lists of demands. The toys she'd sent home had been well received, and the Millers seemed to have reached the consensus that if their young cousin wasn't going to abandon this 'school' nonsense and come home and get back to work, she was dang well going to be useful in other ways.

"No, for th' last time! I ain't gonna be able t' make you a wedding dress by Monday! Ain't my fault his parents want you t' make an honest man out of him! That's what you get for messin' with Townies!"

Ada'd just had a nice, big waffle for lunch, with ice cream, and had one class on a nice warm artificial beach. So far, today was coming up roses.

Yeah, Ada wasn't doing much actual work at Demon Marcus today. She was too busy catching up on her reading, and yelling at Townie nonsense. "Taking 'em away from their People ain't gonna fix nothing! You're just gonna make 'em sad and bored! These morons even worked with an elephant?"

Someone had an opinion about this, and it was far preferable to get her anger out over something like this, than think about if she was sad or not that Marti didn't count as 'dead' enough to come visit her.

Classes had been...interesting so far, and Ada was starting to think that Mr. Wonka had escaped from a carnival somewhere. If some cousin came looking for him, she wasn't going to be surprised.

But she was going to spend her shift today flipping through the summer inventory catalogs, longingly looking at pictures of sunshine and short-sleeves. Maybe later she'd go try on some of those warm-looking oversize sweaters, but for now she was enviously wishing for summer.

Ada had most definitely considered not coming to work today, but she could only hide in her room for so long before that got depressing.

Considering multiple things had tried to kill her over the last week, including the school itself after everything was supposedly back to 'normal', she didn't think it was too terribly paranoid that she had most of the knives from Isabela hidden about her person.

The fish was missing, which was kinda disturbing -- as much as Ada didn't like it, she hoped it hadn't been eaten -- but otherwise the store seemed intact and none the worse for wear.

Very little had happened after the last battle last night, and so Obi-Wan had been loath to ask the last strike team to put themselves in mortal danger. Perhaps the anchoring theory was wrong, and they had done little besides rid the island of two dangerous creatures.

Not a terrible end in and of itself, but... disappointing.

But the morning brought a stark difference. As Obi-Wan stepped outside, he found himself squinting against the rays of a feeble but present sun, hovering low in the sky above a thinner fog.

The island had not changed back. The buildings had not begun to recover, and there was still the shadow of a hollow staggering around in the streets not far away. But there was a sun shining in the sky. "Well," he said, "I suppose this is as good a sign as any."

The Park came so close to the water. So close. Anyone who crossed the wrong side of the street was close enough to the shore and the deeper waters that she could come out and snatch the fool, but the Park itself was too far for her, even without its wards.

But she could taste the fear and chaos and fresh meat, and it was enough to draw her over from where she'd been haunting the dock yesterday, a shadow circling under the waves that would occasionally spyhop or crest, especially if anything interesting was going on.

There was something in the water, and it was hoping some of the meat would come down for a swim.

No, it wasn't her usual day, but Ada had forgotten her personal sewing kit here and needed it to mend a rip in her favorite flannel sleepwear. Yes, her bed was covered in a veritable pile of blankets, but she got cold easy! And once she was here, well, she might as well stay and open it up.

Besides, she was pretty sure Sparkle wouldn't care if she worked two days this week, and Ada wanted the paycheck.

3 MINUTE DATES

Unlike most 3MDs, there didn't seem to be a host. The zombies were just set up, all quiet, when the lights went out.

After a few moments, music started to play. A man's voice started to sing "Ooooooooh" while backing vocals repeated "come on."

The first chorus played before a voice that might have been familiar to longtime residents came up and completely failed to introduce himself. "Welcome to Three Minute Dates. I gave this CD to Tino years ago, just in case this thing I started turned a sexy, legal to drink in the rest of the country 21. In honor of that, have an open bar, courtesy of me, to make sure my name is never forgotten. When somebody reads your names or whatever happens, pair up, get drunk, and let those beer goggles take over for three minutes until this sound plays."

The song cued back up, singing, "You're hopelessly HOPELEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!" It was, perhaps, a mixed message.

"Have fun. And try not to bang too many people at once, like I'm definitely doing right now."

Finally the lights came back on. Jessica turned to Tino at the bar, taking a free drink, and asked, "Who was that?" Tino just shrugged. He clearly knew, but he was admitting to nothing.

Ada threw the shop open the moment she got in to town from class, turned up her favorite angry 8Tracks playlists, and sat down behind the counter to pour herself a vodka soda and rummage around for the mystery novel that someone had once left behind. She wondered who this 'Makita' was that had printed her name so carefully inside the cover and then for some reason had not taken her book with her. You didn't write your name on things unless they were too precious to risk losing, if you couldn't replace them easily.

She should know.

The music was loud, the mermaid was angry, and Demon Marcus was open.

After her classes were done, Ada had headed down to the store. There were newbies on the island, which meant the store might actually see customers. She'd dug out her sign, dusted it off, and propped it in the window, hoping to get at least a few new people in to entertain herself.

It was the end of the term. A bunch of people Dante knew were leaving. Others were staying, but they still deserved a decent send-off to the summer. Besides, screw it, they'd all earned a distraction. So after sending text messages to a whole bunch of people on the island, Dante pulled on a pair of black and red swim trunks (hey, Isabela had asked), bought a cheap one-use barbecue... thing and a ton of meat, and made his way down to the beach.

Picked up a lost volleyball on the way, too.

And okay, if he could rope someone else into manning the barbecue, he would. But right now, he'd set it up, get a nice fire going, and then fantasize about Iz and Ada playing beach volleyball.

[[ wait for the ocd up! dante's ICly invited only those who know who they are, but it's a public party on a public beach, the more the merrier! eta: some use of weed in the comments. ]]

Ada had candy.

Ada had candy, the radio blaring out the best of the 80s-and-90s rock-and-roll, a new dress from New Cardiff and the remainder of the money from Miss Cara in her pocket, and the end of classes to celebrate.

It was a good day as far as Ada was concerned, and she'd ditched her shoes to dance around the store while she cleaned, singing along to whatever tunes the radio served up. Demon Marcus was open, and the mermaid was in.

Look, it wasn't that there was too much color out there right now. Ada loved color. Color was almost as important to her life as sparkles. It was that it clashed. Horribly. And that was a goddamned sin.

She was in the store early since class had been cancelled, and had dutifully changing out the window display. To shades of black, white, and gray. Some blessed, blessed eye-relief for those who couldn't take all the unicorn-rainbow-dewdrop-neon of their current location.

Demon Marcus was open, and Ada was trying on all the sunglasses to see which ones made her look like a fashion model, instead of just someone with a color-hangover.
