Lacey had to admit, she wasn't really sorry that the kids seemed to be gone. Sure, they'd been cute and all, but thinking about the sheer number of teenagers who'd been bestowed with future offspring kind of made her head hurt.

Plus the longer they'd stuck around, the greater her chances of being confronted with balloons.

Augh.

No balloons no balloons please no balloons . . .

A.J. didn't have any balloons but he did have quite a bit of a puppy-dog pout as he came in and plopped onto a stool. "Hey, Boss."

"Hey, A.J.," Lacey replied with a smile. Then she noticed the pout. "Awww . . . missing Aimee?"

A.J. shook his head. "Ah, no, nothing like that, although, yeah, kind of a little. The frown? Is because I'm here today to be the bearer of bad news. I know it's not exactly a two week's noticed, but, uhhh....Sunday's gotta be my last day, Boss."

The pout had faded a little as A.J. talked, but it was definitely back by the time he finished. He was gonna miss this place! He tended to get attached to the places he worked.

That look on Lacey's face? That could definitely be described as wibble-face. "Sunday? As in right after graduation? You're leaving so soon?"

And a wibble face only made A.J.'s pouty face worse. "...Yeah. I know, it totally snuck up on me, y'know?"

"Aw, A.J. I'm gonna miss you," Lacey said, the wibble-face ramping up a little bit in response.

It was, really, turning into a viscious cycle. "I'm gonna miss you too, and I like, barely got a chance to work with you but you were a really cool boss."

Pause.

"Even if Yitzhak had better hair."

". . . hey," Lacey said, frowning for just a moment, just enough to break the impending vicious cycle. "What are you gonna do after this?"

A.J. grinned a bit at that reaction. "Y'know. College. Well, art school, technically, in Boston, hopefully be able to do something there. Before that, though, kinda cool, but me and my--- er, a friend of mine are going to hit up Europe with some of the money I've saved. I've never even been to Canada, so--"

Pause.

"Oh, but there was that school trip to Mexico, so I guess I can't say I haven't ever been out of the country...Huh."

"I've never been to Boston, so we're sort of even there," Lacey said. "Come to think of it, I've never even been to most of Canada, let alone Europe." She looked slightly envious.

"Yeah, but," A.J. said, slumping thoughtfully, "Canada's a heck of a lot bigger than Europe, so it's like....you know. And, I mean, hell, besides the East Coast from New York to about here-sies, and then Mexico, that's all I've been."

"But not for long," Lacey pointed out. "Soon you'll get to say you've seen Paris and London and Rome. Really soon. Sunday's only two days away."

Math wasn't always her strong point.

A.J. paused, looking to the side thoughtfully, lips moving slightly with his counting fingers. "Three," he said, holding the result up, "Cause you got tomorrow," one finger down, "Saturday," another down, "and then Sunday. Unless you don't count Sunday itself, in which case it would only be two, but then, what about today/ If you could today, it's be four, but..."

A.J. blinked.

"Uh, never mind. Doesn't matter. And, hey! Maybe I can send you a postcard! You'll have to put it up on the bulliten board, though."

Lacey watched the finger-counting with a slightly bewildered, slightly abashed expression. "Uh . . . huh. Right. Well, you know what I mean. It's so soon."

But ooo, distraction! "Are you kidding me? I'll even dedicate a special section of the board to you for that!"

"Oooooooooh," A.J. clearly approved of this idea. "That'd be cool! That'd mean lots of postcards..."

"A.J.," Lacey teased lightly, "If you go overboard, I'm either going to have to set up a rotating schedule or get a second bulletin board."

"I would...totally be okay with a special bulletin board," A.J.'s head bobbed congenially as he considered the idea.

"It could be like a sort of diner employee wall of honor!" added Lacey, jumping onto this idea with both feet and a (metaphorically) audible squeal of glee.

"Aww!" A.J. chuckled a little. "I'd be...well, honored!"

"Seriously, that's soo cool."

"Hey. You helped make things less traumatic for me when I first took over," Lacey said sincerely. "And this way I'd sort of get to experience Europe by proxy. Almost."

"At least until you get a chance to do it yourself," A.J. said with an encouraging sort of smile.

WHY IS IT FREEZING IN MY OFFICE TODAY. WHY.
