Mystery Sign Theatre, Wednesday

Kate was feeling pretty okay as she got to work today, although she was hoping Mitchell would show up, what with Jack having so kindly alerted her to there having been shenanigans in Bristol over the weekend. Again.

She wasn't sure what she was more interested in: what had actually been going on, or this mystery woman Mitchell had apparently been flirting with. Either way, there was no way he wasn't getting questions thrown his way if he showed up.

... Well, unless he came by while she was sneaking in to watch the movie. It had ballerinas, come on!

She's behind the counter, flipping through a magazine.

Leave the girl to her magazine. Or sneaking in to watch the movie.

A ballet dancer wins the lead in "Swan Lake" and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan - Princess Odette - but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odile the Black Swan, daughter of an evil magician.

It's there, but is the manager?

The manager was recently back, yes. The manager did not yet know that he was likely to regret this sooner rather than later, courtesy of Annie, but right now he was... poking at his cup of coffee in the office.

Coffee made for such a great excuse to come in, too. One that Kate was gladly using now.

"Ooh, look who's back."

"My trip lasted a bit longer than I was planning this time," Mitchell muttered into his coffee.

He had a certain eau de brood about him.

Kate was picking up on that, yes. Wasn't like it was her first time being exposed to it, and she couldn't help sighing quietly as she went over to get a cup for herself.

"I noticed," she said. "I heard there were some shenanigans."

Mitchell groaned softly. "Jack phoned you?" he guessed, lifting his coffee to his mouth.

"The old TA twins hotline still works," she replied with a gentle shrug of one shoulder. "Keeps me in the loop."

"Nothing big happened," Mitchell said, dismissively. Because that would work. "How's business up front?"

One day, he would actually tell people about something.

That was sadly about the level of opening up about it Kate had been expecting. Still, she rubbed at one of her eyes before she answered the question that she was sure was only meant to distract her.

"Quiet, as usual."

"And this film was supposed to be such an audience draw," Mitchell bitched. At his coffee.

"Yeah well, Fandom doesn't like going to the movies," she shrugged, eyeing him. "Looks to be how it is."

"Barbarians," was Mitchell's opinion. "Did I miss anything while I was gone?"

"I went to Kansas," Kate said with yet another shrug. "Doubt anything too interesting happened here while I was there, either."

"Well," said Mitchell, verbosely, "It's Kansas."

"That it is." Well, tecnically she'd probably spent most of her time in Missouri thanks to being in KC, but whatever. "So, you came back to brood, hmh?"

"I came back to work," Mitchell argued. "I'm not brooding."

If there was an encyclopedia entry for 'broody vampire', his picture would be on it.

"Yeah don't try to bullshit me," Kate replied immediately with a little shake of her head. "I know you."

"Look, nothing big really happened," he argued. Immediately.

"Uh huh." Sarcasm didn't even need any proper words. "Look, I'm not trying to get you to tell me anything. I just wish you'd be honest about the blindingly obvious."

And not say he wasn't brooding.

"I'm not," Mitchell said, pointing his mug at her, "Brooding."

Kate rolled her eyes. "Then pray tell, Mitchell dearest," she drawled, "what are you doing? Because it looks like brooding to me."

"I'm enjoying my coffee," he said. And then took a sip of it. Demonstratively.

"Fine," Kate replied, sounding a touch frustrated but trying not to let it get out of hand. "Guess I shouldn't ask about this mystery ladyfriend of yours, either?"

"Oh, god," Mitchell groaned, dropping his mug back on the table. "Don't tell me the two of you have started a gossip circle."

"We talk," she replied mildly. "It's what friends do."

Of course, they'd also bitched about the vampires and their inconsistent ways of including and excluding their little human companions in their shit, but she wasn't about to say that in quite so many words.

"She just a girl," Mitchell said. It was possible he sounded a little too defensive for that to be entirely true.

"Mm, and I'm a completely well-adjusted, entirely normal chick."

That'd be a no.

"Why does everyone find this so interesting, anyway?" he exclaimed, throwing up his hands.

Kate quirked a brow at that question. "You don't want me to answer that."

Coming from her, the answer probably wouldn't be sugarcoated.

Dropping them to the side of his chair, he said, "It's fine. I'm stable, she's a good laugh, maybe nothing will happen-- just leave it."

"Mmh." Well, at least she was sort of leaving it, though that sound was dubious. She thought she had every right to feel that way. "So, how's everyone else doing, back in Bristol?"

"Pretty good," said Mitchell. He was more than happy to talk about more positive subjects ~~or at least what he knew of them right now~~. "...Though Annie's got a job."

Kate raised her eyebrows some, though her surprise was mild at best. She brought her cup of coffee to her lips before replying in words.

"At the pub?" Well, she'd been around when the subject had first come up. "How's that going for her?"

"She seems to be taking well to it," Mitchell said, shrugging. "Friendly. Though I think George could do without her bringing customers 'round to use the phone."

"George could do without a lot of things, I'm sure," Kate replied, rather dismissively. It was George. "Glad if she's doing well, though. She deserves it."

"She does, yeah," Mitchell replied. "And George is being George. He and Nina seems to have straightened things out..."

Seriously, right now fate was just laughing in his face.

That tended to happen. It didn't pay off to think the low drama life would last for long.

"Well, that's good," Kate nodded. "No one needs that kind of extra tension."

I might get to watch the NT Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller at my local movie theater.

I love that they do live theater broadcasts nowadays.

I'm just gonna laugh at that four days apparently passed in between the movie and the manager's office.

LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUGH!

... Dammit, I caught that the first two times. THIS IS WHAT I GET FOR LETTING THE AUTOCOMPLETE FROM LAST WEEK DISTRACT ME.

I'll be over here ~~in the future~~, hanging my head in shame.

I mean, I know you're ahead of me timezone wise but WHAT HAPPENED IN FINLAND THAT PUT YOU FOUR DAYS AHEAD OF ME?

It got so icy that I slid straight on into Sunday, obviously!
