Ah the beach. Even when it was chilly out it was still nice out here. And still a great place for to practice the ol' Arts of Martial. Billy started out with the basic katas, then got more and more elaborate with his movements till he was flipping off of rocks and such.

Biff was wandering on the beach, wondering vaguely what was wrong with him--his people didn't do cold--when he caught something vaguely familiar out of the corner of his eye.

It looked a little bit like what the monks had taught him. Flashier, but similar.

Eyes sparkling with mischief, he tossed a rock towards the kid, just to see how good his reflexes were.

Pretty good. He did manage to keep from throwing the rock back where it came from after he caught it.

"Hi." he waved.

"That seems like a lot of effort," Biff observed.

"It was at first. Still is sometimes. But it's fun." Billy nodded.

"I meant wasted effort," Biff corrected. "'When you sit, sit. When you stand, stand.'" He shrugged. "And then little bald guys kick the bejeezus out of you and go right back to sitting. All the leaping around doesn't seem to serve any point."

"It's been pretty useful in the fights I've been in." Billy shrugged. "You sound like you learned the old fashioned way."

"From the bald guys in the saffron robes," Biff said. "We spent most of the day sitting or hopping on poles."

"I did a lot of the sitting." Billy nodded. "The poles came later on in my training. There weren't a whole lot of them in New Jersey."

Biff gave him a look. "They're poles. It's hardly the Arc of the Covenant."

Again Billy shrugged, though there might have been a bit of a snicker. "Hey my first sensei didn't bring it up and I didn't fancy gettin' smacked with the practice sword. I didn't get any training on poles till I moved out to California and Colorado."

Biff looked even more confused. "How could you learn basic balance without poles?"

Billy thought back. "Let's see, he had me balance on the roof of the water tower, the backs of chairs, wooden beams, basically whatever we had on hand."

"Because of New Jersey's tragic stick shortage."

"We were hiding from terrorists, which meant we didn't get out of the water tower much. Or, maybe Storm Shadow just didn't care for poles. Like I said, he never brought it up. Also the rich people kept all the sticks and poles for themselves."

"Leave the jokes to the professionals, kid," Biff advised.

"We've all gotta start somewhere. Maybe some of us don't have the knack for them. I always thought it was my deadpan delivery."

"It's because you're not funny," Biff told him with a nod. "I invented sarcasm. I know funny."

"Uh huh." Billy said, not quite believing him. Why that was less believable to him than Biff knowing Jesus, is a mystery for the ages. "Okay. I'm sure humor hasn't changed at all in 2000 years."

Then Billy remembered he was gonna try to get along with Biff. "Say you wouldn't by any chance be interested in being the faculty advisor to A Martial Arts club would you?"

"It'd be more than just you who was too poor for poles, right?" Biff checked, voice dripping with sarcasm.

"God I hope so."

"Thank you Sir." Billy bowed, automatically affording Biff the respect of a Sensei.
