Community Center Class: Making The World A Better Place (Tuesday Evening)
"If you hate the hats, good news, we're leaving the island again, so you can try and take them off if you want," Yang said as people arrived at the Causeway. "Hope you got my handwavy message to dress warm!"
"A bunch of cities got hit by snow over the last few days. Predictably, the residents were unprepared because of unseasonably warm weather lately. Gotta love global warming. However, the cities were also unprepared, and while they've been out handling the roads, they have not yet cleared the sidewalks by their parks."
"Why does this matter? Because not everyone who's disabled has a bad-ass prosthetic like my arm," she said bluntly. "They may use mobility aids, or just get along the best they can, and a snow and ice covered sidewalk? Does not allow them to get to the store or to public transit."
"Keeping sidewalks clear is important for people with mobility aids, people with strollers, and just general safety! Not everyone has a car, or speeder bike, or whatever to get around, and sometimes you just gotta walk somewhere."
"This city has a group called the Snow Angels. They're broken up into groups by neighborhood, and handle clearing the sidewalks and public transit stations when the city fails to help out in a timely manner, ESPECIALLY around retirement homes and high-density housing filled with immigrants who reply heavily on public transportation. They also take applications for helping out private citizens who cannot clear their own walkways or driveways for a variety of reasons, and don't have the money to pay someone else to do it for them."
"So today you've got a few options: help with snow removal by going out with one of the teams, stay at the community center and pass out hot cider and coco to teams that are coming in to warm up, or work dispatch with the radios to coordinate teams. Now let's go!"
