The Gig, Sunday
Firekeeper didn't usually skip the welcome picnic, but yesterday she'd been- well, still sulking in her own way about Katniss having to leave. She still had Blind Seer, of course, but both of them agreed that the room seemed far too empty without their friend and hunting partner. At the same time, they were relieved to find that the school hadn't assigned a new roommate.
In any case, with all the new faces milling about, there was definitely some comfort in the familiar, although the horses were disappointed at the lack of gossip about new students.
Perhaps I'll have something to share next week, Firekeeper said placatingly, rolling her eyes in fond exasperation.

"It's funny how different the island can feel -- or smell -- in just a few days, isn't it?"

She grimaced and spread out napkins over a hay bale, then laid out the food atop them.
"That's a cheerful way to look at it. Pessimistic, or realistic?" Knowing Firekeeper, she'd guess the latter; if it was the former, she'd be concerned.

The circumstances that had led up to Katniss's departure didn't seem as relevant to Tahiri, who knew kriffing well she could hardly wade in and do anything about them anyway, as doing what she could for Firekeeper did.
"I suppose that depends on the intent of the ones in charge," she allowed. "Still, hardly a cheerful way to start the summer, is it?"

"Besides," she added, tossing one of the patties to Blind Seer, "it's colder than it ought to be out there. What better way to keep warm?"
