Luke's Diner, January 24 (Monday)

Lacey was expecting a special delivery today; she'd spent the weekend collecting, matting, and framing some new artwork for the diner walls, and all she needed was the set of picture-hanging hardware she'd ordered.

. . . the shipment that did come in was large, and bulky, and not at all what she expected.

"A white lawn chair? But I ordered nails . . ."

Suspicious glances at the kitchen staff yielded nothing but helpless shrugs and mumbled denials, so Lacey sighed, picked up the lawn chair, and headed for the storage room. "I guess this can just go back there with the tricycle planter for now."

"Hello, Lacey," Angua greeted, taking her usual lunch break despite being worried about what other budget suggestions Ralph would have waiting for her when she got back. "How was your weekend?"

"Quiet," Lacey assured her. That was never a bad thing in Fandom. "Lots of fun with framing, though! I got a bunch of cute new prints I was going to put up on the walls, but you know, I thought: wouldn't it be more satisfying to frame them myself? So I got all the stuff to do it, and, well."

She waved a hand at the space on the far wall that she'd designated for the new artwork.

"The hardware to hang all of it hasn't shown up yet."

She made her way around the counter to lean against it. "How about you? Anything terribly exciting?"

Angua looked at Lacey for a moment, to make sure that she really had used the words fun and framing together in the same sentence.

"Nothing at all," she said, and, like Lacey's quiet, it was said with the utmost appreciation. "Just stayed in a lot with the dog."

Which was one way to put it, yes.

"Awwwwwwwww," Lacey intoned in a frighteningly sugary-sweet voice. (You could probably practically taste it.) "That sounds all . . . warm and cozy and domestic. And relaxing. Was it relaxing?"

"Incredibly," Angua lied through her teeth as she nodded. "And now it's Monday, back to work as normal, I suppose."

"Good old Monday," Lacey agreed, bobbing her head from side to side. (God help the person who decided to make a Lacey bobblehead doll.) "Back to the good old weekly grind. How's the paperwork treating you this Monday?"

At least this once, John was in a fairly jovial mood when he entered the diner. His resulting, "Good afternoon!" was chipper as well. He felt fairly comfortable in his warm sweater - no freezing in the cold for him - and waited patiently until Lacey answered.

It didn't take that long until Lacey answered.

"John, hi!"

About 0.4 seconds, actually, during which she deferred the process of reorganizing all the milk cartons in the fridge until later and shut the fridge to get tea started for him.

"Well, someone looks like he doesn't need a strong drink for once. Did class go surprisingly well?"

"I had fun," John announced, "Even if the subject matter was a little embarrassing. I would still like my usual, if it's all right."

Tea and company. It was a good combination.

"Do I want to ask what the subject matter was?" Lacey inquired lightly, setting a mug out for him. "Or more importantly: were the kids the embarrassed ones?"

"Non-penetrative intercourse," John said. It worked best if you said it in scientific terms and avoided the word 'sex' or 'penis', yes. He would also gladly take that mug and sit down. "I think it might have been worse for them than it was for me, but I can't be sure."

And it was such a good thing Lacey hadn't been drinking anything at the time, or the results would have been spectacularly slapstick and unsanitary.

"Oh my gosh. You didn't . . . actually call it that for them, did you?"

Excuse her, she was starting to giggle.

Mid-morning, Jack stepped into Luke's and out of the cold. He pulled off his jacket and took a brief look around before he went to the counter. "Excuse me, are you the owner?"

Lacey had been contemplating whether she could clear a spot for that lawn chair, and maybe create some kind of silly bit of theme seating -- a fake beachside patio table? Something like that.

Potential customers always got her attention, though, and she shelved the idea as she waved him in.

"I'm not the owner, but I do manage the place," she assured him. "Looking for something warm to drink, or . . . ?"

Hey, that sign had been out there for a while; she could hope.

Not one to pass up an opportunity to get straight to the point, Jack gave his best friendly smile. "Actually, I was hoping I could convince you to hire me. I have experience."

"Well, now I'm curious about whether you came with a whole sales pitch prepared," Lacey joked a bit clumsily. "I haven't been using previous experience as an absolute requirement for the job, but it's a plus."

The sign had, at one point, included 'no experience necessary' at the bottom; she'd just gone so overboard decorating it with sketches of flowers and curlicues that the disclaimer had entirely disappeared.

"I don't have anything planned," Jack admitted. "But I'm good at improvising, so I was going to get a feel for the conversation and come up with something that would completely convince you to hire me. Is it working?"

. . . that was a rather loaded question to ask of someone who could be really, really easily fooled, wasn't it? Well, it worked in Jack's favor.

"Amazingly well, actually," Lacey acknowledged. "Think you could talk people into trying the specials?"
