Luke's Diner, May 30 (Monday)

The truth was that all the rain was getting Lacey down. Oh, she was trying not to show it, which only meant delving into a fit of forced manic cheerfulness that made it even more obvious that she was trying to overcompensate for something.

But the upshot of all that was that the dessert case in the diner today was filled with brightly-colored, elaborately frosted baked goods.

So it wasn't too bad, was it?

The rain still didn't have Ariel down, but she was glad for a break for her poorly chosen U artist in another shop as she came to the diner for lunch.

"Hello, Miss Burrows!" she chirped as she settled at the counter.

"Hi there, Ariel," Lacey replied with the same manic cheer (yay for consistency) as she rearranged the dessert case one more time for no reason whatsoever. "What can I fry -- I mean, get -- for you today?"

Awww, Miss Burrows picked up quick! Ariel grinned, bouncing slightly because she'd been looking forward to having something fried - she meant, gotten - for her all morning.

"Bod says you can't fry cherry tomatoes," she announced. "I want to prove Bod wrong."

Cherry tomatoes were a lot less scary than Cheetos and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, in Lacey's opinion, and she thought for a moment, tapping a finger against her lips.

"Actually, I found a recipe once that I hadn't gotten around to trying with fried mozzarella balls and cherry tomatoes," she said slowly. "Battered, with little skewers . . . aww, they were really cute."

"Can we try it?" Ariel asked hopefully. "I got the idea from trying to deep fry a salad, but mozzarella and tomatoes sounds pretty good, too."

"Absolutely!" Lacey agreed, bouncing up with a little squeeing noise, because this experiment promised to be a lot more fun. She dug beneath the counter for a moment (rifling through her recipe box) and produced a neatly hand-written card (http://www.lifesambrosia.com/2009/05/fried-caprese-bites-recipe.html). "Let's just get the recipe -- let's see, I've got the mini-mozzarella balls and tomatoes in the fridge, and if you could just go grab a few leaves of basil off that planter right there?"

Ariel leaned over, stretching her neck to get a peek at the card, before glancing over her shoulder. "Off this one?" she asked, raising her eyebrows as she found one of the planters. "Really?"

"Yeah, that one," Lacey called, glad she kept the different kinds of leafy greens in the planters carefully separated from each other. "We'll need about . . . hmm, ten or twelve?"

"I had no idea that we could eat the plants!" Ariel said, clearly pleased by this revelation as she searched through and picked out ten or twelve of her favorites for the food...and a few extra for herself.

"I'm trying to source as locally as possible," Lacey explained as if that should make sense to everyone. "And how much more local does it get than . . . planters that just . . . appeared one day . . . anyway."

She had tons of basil growing. She wouldn't notice a few extra leaves missing.

"What do you mean, just appeared one day?" asked Ariel, who was now eating one of those swiped leaves.
