NINA'S BIRTHDAY SPECTACULAR!! - The Beach; Saturday Evening [05/30].

So, it was Nina's birthday weekend and Prompto had been planning this for a while---well, okay, so, he'd been planning it since Tuesday, but! That was, like, really ahead of the game for him! And he was feeling pretty confident in how everything was falling into place, getting to the island early so he could make sure everything to set up right and engaging his 'troops' to keep Nina nice and distracted for the day -- Foomy on the front line (he didn't think he could effectively recruite Ms. Dozy and he was not wrong), with Ignis slipping in to ask about some rando obscure detail of Lucis military history and asking her thoughts about a more modern approach, Iris engaging in a super important flailing manuever of what to wear to some school event that night, and then, finally, the real coup to grace of distraction and preoccupation, deploying Noctis with the deceptively simple 'happy birthday' text that should really buy him some time.

And so, by the time the evening was on its way and the sunset arrived to distract Prompto (dressed, of course, in a terrible shirt to fit the theme) with that awful longing for actual sunsets all over again, everything was set and ready to go, and the beach looked like a party store had tropical indigestion and threw fake plastic pink flowers and long grass table skirts up over everything. There was a big bonfire roaring and ready to go and tiki torches set strategically to keep everything nice and illuminated for the night, a stereo pumping out some real sick beats, a disgusting amount of pink flower leis, tons of food....and yes, even a palm tree balloon arch, don't even.

...so now all they needed was people, and, eventually, the birthday girl herself, as Prompto was now bouncing and fidgeting over the sand, really hoping people got the invitations. Or, if anything, that they saw there was a big ass party out on the beach and showed up even just to check it out or crash whatever it was.

It would be nice, though, if it was mostly people here for Nina's birthday, because he just knew how much it would mean to her.

In his defense, Prompto is not actually from this world, and only really googled 'cool summer party ideas,' which is what landed him here.

But don't worry. You were all definitely getting lei'd by Prompto.

One of the nice things about waiting on a sequel being from a post-apocalyptic world where the ultimate threat to your existence was just sort of hanging dormant but threateningly in a castle and had been for a while now was that it afforded Sidon plenty of time to make it back to the island for events such as this. Even if his current situation wasn't just one, big, long, breath-holding waiting game, though, he would have most certainly made the effort to return for Nina's birthday, of course! He may be a prince, but he was also a friend, and, sometimes, friend had to come first!

But, no, seriously, after being out in the multiverse and especially after experiencing this island, Zora's Domain and even Hyrule as a whole was really, really boring....

Nina had been one of the few people that Astrid felt like she'd been able to connect with since she got back, so of course she was going to make an appearance at her birthday party. Considering how friendly and bubbly and popular Nina was, though, she didn't expect to be doing much more than sitting off to the side with a sketchbook, feeling glad that the theme involved a lot of various fire sources of light, which meant excellent shadow and light studies.

A party like this was just the sort of thing Tisarwat had been missing since moving out of the dorms, and the fact that it was for Nina made it a no-brainer that she'd be attending. Especially since it might inspire her to get things going on her own party here soon.

Liam felt perhaps a little odd about being the only non-student (or recent graduate) so far, but Nina was one of his favorite students, so absolutely he was going to come out and celebrate her birthday.

The question was mostly rhetorical. Freya, who had unfortunately failed to catch up with this world's technology so far and didn't really know Nina besides, was mostly out doing some training, when she caught sight of the lights and heard the music from atop the lighthouse. So she leaped down and took a few more leaps to get her closer for a better look.

Naturally, the food tables are totally decked out in a way that might make it difficult to actually find the food amongst the decorations, but they are there! There's also two bowls of distinctly marked punch (regular and spiked), and Prompto's keeping a close eye to make sure they stay that way, as well as sodas, beers, a few things to mix fancy tropical drinks because he had bought a lot of tiny little drink umbrellas, and, of course, the moddable snacks and food.

No pig roast though, because the thought of that kind of made Prompto sad, but he did employ Wayne to man the grill because what are other characters but your own personal arsenal of NPCs? with a few choice recipes from Ignis's repertoire.

He'd do it himself, but, you know, he sort of had to host the thing.

Shockingly, there were actually no Cup Noodles^TM.

And, yes, as per the narrative, Wayne was manning the grill, which he felt pretty good about, because that meant there was less likeleh a chance of someone else going and messing it all up. No one would be surprised to learn that Wayne was a man who took a grill very seriously.

Some people might be surprised to see that, yes, even Wayne was wearing a lei.

There were a few people by now who might have not been surprised by that, though.

With confidence that the distractions had worked, and once everything seemed to be really warmed up and going, Prompto deployed the final step to his perfect party mission: sending Nina a single text that said, simply: OMG NINA. U HAVE to come to the beach ASAP!!!!!!!!!!

And so now? They just waited for her to ping in get here!

It had been a weird day, really, between Foomy being a total nuisance onwards. Like, none of it was weird individually, but all together it had left her feeling, well, appreciated actually?

She loved helping Iris and she liked debating military approaches with Ignis and Noctis wishing her a happy birthday had left her feeling just. Like. Absolutely floating.

Then came Prompto's text and, like, the way it had all happened in one day abruptly made sense but the warm fuzzies from being needed and recognized didn't fade and so she made her way out to the beach, still not expecting a party, but definitely expecting her brother...

"Omigosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????!?!?!??!!"

Even without the incredibly lengthly note filled with overly complimentary adverbs and adjectives that accompanied it, it shouldn't be too far of a stretch for Nina to know who had gotten her the small box with a very Zora-inspired pendant within, which also came with a small vial of fairy potion, which Sidon had included not so much with use of the curative in mind, but more for the fact that he thought Nina would appreciate the color and the adorable winged bottle.

If Astrid had a little more time to prepare, she might have done something a little more, but she hadn't even known it was Nina's birthday until Prompto's message went out. Still, two days was more than enough time for her to make two small watercolor paintings, find frames for them, and wrap them up with wrapping paper she'd decorated herself with a few sponges, and some pink, purple, and grey paint, done in shapes remnicent of flowers.

The first painting was one of Foomy, done very much in a style remnicent of her Dürer hare, and the other was one of Nina done very much in the style of Alphonse Mucha's Princess Hyacinth, because there was just something about that smirk that seemed to lend itself perfectly to Nina's likeness.

She didn't expect Nina to necessarily know the references, exactly, but she did feel that she would at least appreciate the personal touch in the gift.

Wayne's present was, of course, very practical, while still being somewhat personal and might even suggest that Wayne had a sense of humor somewhere underneath all that plaid and grunting and stoicism.

And it was rated one of the best ones of 2020 by reviewed.com, too, so he hoped there weren't going to be any complaints about it.

Liam's usual go-to's for presents were typically things like clothes or booze (or jewelry if you were Verity).

However, all of those options weren't terribly viable considering he was an adult and Nina was a teenager, so instead she got a weapon.
