Gabriel, who had watched the invading children from the church roof, had been almost disappointed that none of them had come to visit the church. He was good at instilling the fear of God in them. Really.

On the other hand he still had half a box of donuts, all to himself.

It was early, so early there were several hours until dawn, but still Karal was there. He'd left Evey peacefully sleeping and come down to the church.

He had to say goodbye to Gabriel. "Gabriel?" he called as he pushed the door open. "Are you here?"

Gabriel looked up, sitting perched on the backrest of a pew. "Karal!" He looked strangely cheerful and gestured towards the box beside him. "I went shopping. Help yourself."

"Thank you." He took a doughnut for politeness sake, but he was too tense to eat. "You seem happy today, Gabriel," he said, sitting near him.

"Yes, well, no reason not to be," Gabriel replied, which might not have made much sense at all. "Busy week?" He took a bit out of chocolate donut.

Cat jumped up on the pew next to them.

"It has been." He pulled off a bit of doughnut and offered it to Cat. "A busy few weeks, in fact. Gabriel," he stopped, started again, "I have to leave in a few hours. I might not be returning."

Gabriel looked shocked. "You can't leave," he told Karal. "You're needed here. Is this something your God has come up with?"

He rubbed his forehead. "I am His servant, and I do His Will in this, but it's for all the people of my world. There is danger facing it, and I am needed to help stop it," he replied quietly. "I'm sorry, but I must go."

"Oh." Gabriel didn't look convinced. His eyes narrowed. "I want you to come back. So if there's a problem..." He shrugged. Then he took the box and offered it to Karal. "You take these."

It had him blinking hard for a moment. "I'm going to do my very best to come back. I promise," he said as he took the box. "There's something people do when they say goodbye. It's traditional to hug each other. Do you think..."

Gabriel blinked, looking a little shocked. "Traditional? Well, in that case..." He prepared himself to let Karal hug him.

Karal set the box down and stood up, giving Gabriel a quick hug.

There wasn't much of a return hug, but at least Gabriel didn't pull away. "Make sure you return," he said.

Or he'd have to have a talk with his God, really.

It was more than he'd expected, really, and he smiled as he gathered up the box. "I will do my very best, Gabriel." Karal turned to leave, then stopped, turning back. "It was really good to know you."

"See you later." Gabriel smiled. Even if Karal wasn't coming back, he could probably find him somewhere. Being the angel of Death had its advantages.

Karal gave him a nod and a quick smile, then left the church, heading towards the stables to say goodbye to Trenor.
