Luke's Diner, Friday, July 25

Ella was bored to be at work today. Bored bored bored. Even after she was done with her prep work, she kept wandering to the windows and stretching her neck toward the ocean, wishing she were at the beach.

Eventually, she settled on the stool behind the counter with the Bitterwoman volume she'd gotten at the library. Bitterwoman had been kidnapped by the Pride of Evil, and had to depend on that drip, Trevor, to rescue her.

Luke's was open.

That darn girl at the counter is stuck in her own head anyhow.

But she'll notice you if you poke at her.

"Watching something?" Dick asked as he took a seat at the counter.

"Reading," Ella answered, setting her comic aside and smiling. "Do you know a boy called Teddy? He said I would like Bitterwoman, so I got a volume at the library."

She paused. "I'm not sure I understand why she would want to fight crime dressed that way."

"I don't think I've met him, no," Dick said. "Does she have a cape?"

"Sometimes," Ella said. "But everything else is just ... it looks itchy." She pushed the book across the counter for Dick to see. "Wouldn't that chafe?"

"It's not so bad," Dick said, taking a look. "I spent my childhood in tights for the circus. I don't know if I just got used to it, but it never bothered me."

Ella just looked at him for a second. "I can't tell if you're joking or not."

"I'm not," Dick said. "I was a circus acrobat when I was a kid. Part of The Flying Graysons!" He held his arms up the same way he always did when he said the name of his family's act in that announcer's voice.

"That's incredible," Ella grinned. "So can you still do the tricks?"

"Yes, I can. We don't have a trapeze or a highwire around here, so I can't really show off, though. What kind of town doesn't have a trapeze in the park?" Dick joked.

Ella laughed. "A sadly lacking one," she said. "You need to write a letter, you know. I'm sure the mayor would rush to install one if you let them know it was so you could show off."

"It's worth a shot, right?" Dick said. With or without the usual props, he was still going to show off. After all, there was a cute girl watching. He got off the stool, planted his hands on it, and lifted himself into a handstand. Then he pulled one hand off the stool to make it more impressive. "Ta da."

Ella bounced a little. "Impressive!" she told him. "If you did that on a tightrope I would even clap."

She felt herself starting to blush. When he turned upside down like this, his mouth was at her eye level, and that was oddly distracting.

"It takes a one-handed handstand on a tightrope to get applause out of you?" Dick asked. "Well, at least you've got standards." He dismounted the stool and stuck the landing.

"A girl has to have standards," Ella informed him cheerily. "If I didn't, I'd have to start applauding everything, like an idiot."

"But that was very cool."

"I have to admit, it does make it more fun when I have to make an effort," Dick said. "Speaking of fun, I had a lot of it last week."

"Oh good, I did too," Ella grinned. "I'm glad you got me to try karaoke."

She hesitated for a second, then added, "I like spending time with you."

Dick smiled. "I take that as a high compliment from someone with high standards. If you're up for it, we could spend more time together sometime next week."

"I might be able to manage that," Ella said. "Do you like the beach? I haven't been, much, but it's so hot lately the water is practically singing to me."

"Assuming the water doesn't actually start singing, I'm in," Dick said.

"I can't promise that, given where we live," Ella pointed out. "But it won't start singing on my account."

"I've no classes Monday or Thursday, and only one Tuesday," she offered, by way of scheduling.

"Tuesday works for me," Dick said.

"I'll ~~throw up a post before I leave work~~ meet you there, then," Ella promised. "I might even stop by the diner and get some snacks, if I remember."

As she spoke, she felt the slightest pang of guilt, She wasn't sure if she should tell Dick about Char, or the other way around, or both, and if either of them thought of her only as a friend the whole exercise would make her feel sillier yet.

"I can't wait," Dick said. "I'll see you then, if not before."

"Then if not before," Ella agreed, reaching across the counter to give him a ~~duckable~~ hug.

Dick leaned over to receive the hug, only slightly surprised that it was actually a hug and not a kiss. He reminded himself that Ella seemed to play it a little slower than most of the girls he'd gone out with in the past. And it wasn't like he was going to complain about body contact with a cute girl. "Enjoy the rest of your shift. Don't work too hard."

Ella got bored enough to tidy the stray thumbtacks into neat rows.
