Luke's Diner, Friday

Ella was oblivious to Halloween, though she did feel oddly disconcerted by the balloon giraffe she had gotten in the park. As such, she went through her normal morning routine in the diner then settled at the counter with a novel.

The kitchen staff decided she was dressed as Girl Who Doesn't Get Halloween.

Lacey had had great ideas of decorating the diner for Halloween, and she bustled in, arms loaded down with bags of candy and streamers, early in the day to find Ella there.

"Oh, wow. I halfway expected you not to be in today," she said around the pile of paraphernalia.

"Well, it's Halloween, isn't it?" Lacey let out a noise that sounded almost like the gleeful squeal of someone looking forward to a sugar high by proxy. "I would've thought all you kids had plans for the night."

She edged toward the nearest table and started setting things down. "It's okay. I've g -- oops!" A bag of Hershey's Kisses toppled to the floor.

"Oh, gosh, I forgot," Lacey said once she'd set down most of what she was holding -- more like dropped it onto the table. "You're one of those kids from before Halloween, aren't you?"

Occasionally her tact failed. Like now.

"Particularly for the candy industry," Lacey said, blinking a little; she had never expected to have to give her opinion on whether Halloween was important. "Everybody dresses up in costumes, goes out and gets free candy, spends the rest of the night bouncing off the ceiling when they're not trying to scare each other . . . it's fun! Do you want to give it a try? Experience an Earth holiday? I'll give you the evening off, paid."

She grinned, goofily. "I want to pass out candy. I love that part."

"I actually have no idea," Lacey admitted. She hadn't paid much attention to that past the candy. Brightening, she added, "No, really, you should go. I insist. Take the evening off, go trick-or-treating, have fun!"

By evening once Shanie realized she'd forgotten to hit post on the browser at work hours ago, Lacey had the diner festooned with orange and black streamers, pumpkins of all shapes and sizes, fake spiders hanging off the lamps, and goofy cartoon vampire cutouts in the windows.

No ghosts, though. She was still traumatized.

But there were cheesy plastic cauldrons of candy, and jack o'lantern pumpkins, and gravestone brownies everywhere.
