Luke's Diner, Friday, 12/5

Ella had tried to lure the tiny horses on the diner roof down with hay and lumps of sugar, but hadn't met with any success. She was still pouting about that failure as she took her station behind the counter, and she made the chefs cook things that the horses would like, just in case they changed their minds.

She is there, unless she's gone outside to watch the horsies some more.

"Hello there," Dick said, taking a seat at the counter. "Do you have any candy canes?"

"Oh, probably," Ella said, grinning a greeting. "Want some hot chocolate to go with it?"

"Of course!" Dick said. "Marshmallows in it?"

"For you, sure," Ella said, going to put the order in. "How have you been?"

"Thanks," Dick said. "I've been good. It was nice to get back home last week, and the semester's almost over. No real complaints. How about you?"

"More or less the same," she said. "I could complain that the little horses won't come off the roof, or that I missed cheerleading this week, but that's about it."

"I say blame missing practice on the horses," Dick suggested. "Two birds with one stone."

"Well, but the horses only got here today," Ella said thoughtfully. "But maybe. Somehow."

... no, she didn't know how.

"Come on, use them as an excuse. It'll be entertaining for everyone," Dick said.

"The little horses made me miss cheerleading practice," Ella said, afetr she realized that was a command. "They ... had a miniature stampede that blocked my path."

"Was the miniature stampede adorable?" Dick asked, oblivious to that had happened.

"Oh, very much so," Ella said, trying to imagine such a thing. "Probably not much fun for the horses in it, though."

"As long as there were no tiny horse collisions, I don't see why it would necessarily be that bad. They could have been stampeding for the fun of it," Dick said.

Ella looked doubtful. "I've never seen that happen, but I've never seen tiny horses on rooftops, either."

"If it helps, if I were a tiny horse, I'd stampede all the time," Dick said.

She leaned to kiss his forehead. "I'm sure you would."

"How about you? If you were a tiny horse, what would you do?" Dick asked.

Whatever I was told. Ella swallowed that answer. "Probably beg for treats," she said. "Gallop, too."
