Or to Furball!

"There are a lot of those around lately," Viki mused, nodding to the Ewok as she took a seat. "And hello to you."

"Assignment for ethics class," Ella said. "Viki, meet Furball."

"Yub!" Furball said.

"And hello to you as well," she said amicably, holding out her hand for him to shake, poke at, or anything really. "Will you have him for long? As he is an assignment, after all."

He grabbed Viki's hand and tried to pull her finger into gummy mouth. "He bites," Ella warned. "And pulls hair. I don't think he can understand not to."

"He's mine and Harvey's until class Tuesday. We're trading, every other day."

She tugged her finger, somewhat gently, but enough hopefully to keep it from his mouth.

"I shouldn't think most babies would understand," Viki conceded. "It seems rather beyond their basic comprehension of events. Everything is simply new and exciting to them."

"And the more dangerous something is, the more attractive it becomes," Ela said wryly. "We're staying out of the kitchen. He's far too interested in the burners on the stove for his own good."

"And that," she told the little one, "would be a lesson you would not care to learn."

"Though, admittedly, some people never do learn, from what I've seen, that dangerous things are generally bad or painful lessons." Viki considered that. "Sometimes worth it, of course, but..."

"Some people never get much smarter than Furball," Ella agreed as the baby blinked innocently at her. "But I suppose if you try to hard to never get hurt, you'll never learn anything."

"That is true as well," Viki said, smiling. "But there is a difference between actively seeking it out when it is not needed, and simply getting hurt in the course of life."

Ella nodded in agreement; there didn't seem to be a lot more to say. "True," she remarked. "You're philosophical today."

Viki blinked, honestly confused. "I am? I hadn't realized. It's just talk and then you wind up thinking about it and then, sometimes, there's a circle and you get confused, while other times that is that though it's rather rare that outcome."

"You seem so to me!" Ella half-laughed. "But ... wait, what is what? You confused me further, I'm afraid."

"Conversations," she said patiently. "They go in circles a great deal and accomplish things only little by little, especially when it's something that neither person considers much. And sometimes, though, you get to an end of one and nothing more to be said on a topic, but that's rarer."

"I see," Ella said, piecing things together in his mind. "I suppose the question is whether a conversation can really be ended, or if it's just a matter of one or both people getting tired of the question before them."

"Exactly," she said, nodding. "Just so, and most things never really have a clear ending or beginning--much like history, you see?"

"Do think history really has no beginning or end, or that it's just we weren't there for the first, and hopefully will miss the last?" Ella queried.

"I don't think," she mused, "that any one species has any right to determine where it all began. We've all got a different perspective on it."

"But there has to have been something that was the very first," Ella said. "Even if it's a rock lichen, or the like."

"Why though?" she asked. "Why does there have to be a start? It could just keep stretching back forever."

"But something has to have been the very first," Ella said, stubborn. "If there's not ... I don't know. My head hurts thinking about it."

"Mine doesn't," she said easily. "Though I think that, really, we could not say what came first at all. If it came first, after all, would it not wonder what was there before it?"

"I suppose it would, even if it were a lichen," Ella had to admit. "if lichens wonder, but that makes as much sense as them beng aware of history at all."

"It is hard to say," she confessed. "As I have never been a lichen, and can only think about it from the point of view of someone used to thinking."

"So do we need to count history from when there was nothing that could think?" Ella wondered. "I mean, if there are only lichen and mold, and they don't, how can there be history?"

Viki considered that.

"Perhaps," she mused, "we first have to decide what counts as history, and how thinking ought to be measured."

Minsc was finding it a bit difficult to feed himself, a giant miniature space hamster, and a horse-leech turned cute red panda, especially since their tastes seemed to run so diversely. He figured a stop into some of the places about town to see if there were better solutions wouldn't hurt.

"Lady Ella!" he said as he sat down, settled Boo on the counter, and helped Rosie scrambled up onto a stool at the counter. "Do you have anything that might be good for a strange menagerie of hungry customers?"

And, of course, he noticed the Wokling, his interest piquing. "And what is that delightful little fuzzball?"

"Professor Minsc!" Ella greeted, with a slight curtsy. "This is Furball, actually. He's my Wokling for Ethics class."

Furball nub-nubed at Minsc loudly.

"I know Boo, but who's your other friend? And will they both, perhaps, eat a green salad, while I get you something a little more substantial?"

Minsc glanced to his company. Boo looked quite apathetic, sniffing at a napkin holder, but the panda looked approving, and so Minsc nodded. "A green salad for the two of them sounds good," he said. "Just no fish! And I will take just a big plate of meat."

"And the red panda is actually Rosie, from the Gig," he explained, not sure if Lady Ella was acquainted with her. "She's not feeling herself lately, and there seem to be no spells or potions to help her feel a bit better. We've been getting along quite nicely, though!" Which was not at all to suggest that Minsc was just more comfortable working with animals than other people, but that was pretty much the truth.

"Tell me about this Wokling! I have never seen such a creature!"

"Meat for you, salad for the creatures," Ella repeated, going to put the order in. "Is steak all right, for the meat?"

She leaned closer to the panda as she waited for her answer. "Hi, Rosie. You let me ride a horse when you were a person!"

"And the Wokling, she added, almost as an afterthought, "is from Master Skywalker's world. I'm told they grow to be warriors, but this one is just a baby. He likes to pull my hair and he eats almost anything."

Rosie looked a little resigned and defeated in the realization that Minsc wasn't going to stop taking her places, so she gave what might have looked like a small wave.

"Steak is fine!" Minsc said. "And what a great idea, to have you all take care of little creatures! I should have to have anyone who is both classes tell me about their experiences with the little guys."

He gave the Wokling a smile, and offered out his hand in case the little thing wanted to nibble a bit. "Ah, yes, I can see the warrior in his eyes! Good thing about me working with creatures is that I have no hair for them to pull!"

"Could we get extra credit?" Ella asked, thinking it worth a try. She grinned at Furball.

He did not look like a warrior to her. "Do you think the warrior is offended to be called Furball?"

"Why would he be offended?" Minsc asked, still trying to get Furball to play with his fingers. "That's his name, isn't it?"

"And extra credit, "he added, "might not have to be a bad idea. I might have to get in touch with Sir Anakin first, though, to make sure you've all done a good job with the little guys before you earn anything."

"But Harvey and I named him," Ella said, worrying. The oblivious Furball smiled at Minsc and batted at his hands. "Maybe his name in Ewokese means 'Dragon King' and we've insulted him."

She scritched his back. "He seems happy enough, anyhow."

"I think Furball is an excellent name for him!" said the man with the hamster named Boo. Minsc started to play with Furball a little bit, rubbing his belly and not at all worried about any scratches or bites, for his hands have been through much worse things before.

"At any rate, he does not seem to mind."

Ella agreed, "He looks happy with you playing with him," then just watched them wrestle for a moment, until a bell from the kitchen jolted her to alertness. "Oh, and I think your food is ready."

She brought it out -- first a plate heaped with salad for the panda and hamster to share, then a platter overflowing with beef for Minsc. "I'll get water for the three of you, too."

Boo almost immediately went and hopped up on the salad and started nibbling at it from the middle of the plate. Rosie was a bit more reserved in helping herself, while Minsc completely seemed to ignore his, his attention entirely devoted to the Wokling.

"Water is a fine idea, Lady Ella!" he stated, before cooing to Furball all sorts of things about how he was going to grow up to be a fine warrior, yes he would!, with a nice furry coat that will make it into all the legends!

Ella filled one tall glass, one shallow bowl, and one tiny ramekin with water, setting them on the counter in a neat row, before she leaned back to watch Minsc with the creature. "He likes playing peekaboo," she volunteered.

"Oh!" Minsc chuckled at the suggestion. "Is that so? Well, then!"

One hand still played with Furball while the other covered Minsc's eyes and he started up a very involved game of peekaboo with the little Wokling.

That was entirely too cute; Ella was just going to stand, and watch them, and grin, and occasionally wipe down a table as a sop of recognizance to the fact she was supposed to be working.

She was even humming under her breath.
