Luke's Diner, Friday, 11/7

Ella had a craving for waffles as she entered the diner.

The nice thing about working around food was, you got what you wanted, and Ella was soon happily enjoying a second breakfast.

If she went for a third one, she'd get the kind with ice cream and call it dessert.

Luke's was open.

After his classes, Dick went to the diner and took a seat at the counter. "I think I might have to go with some waffles."

"I think you might be in luck," Ella grinned, leaning across the counter for a quick kiss. "Any particular kind of waffle?"

After the kiss, Dick joked, "That was your tip, by the way. Let's go with the Belgian kind."

"Good idea. I don't really trust the Mexican ones," Ella told him, turning to give the order to the kitchen. "Any chance I could increase my tip?"

"Maybe. But it depends on how good the waffles are," Dick joked. "So you'd better hope the guys back there know their waffles."

"I've been eating them all day and I like them," Ella groused. "I'm going to weigh about 300 pounds thanks to this job, I swear."

"That sounds like a horrifying number of waffles," Dick said, trying to picture how many waffles it would take to actually do that.

"But it wouldn't just be the waffles," Ella said. "There'd be stew and cake and pie and ... why do I want pie now?"

"Because dessert sounds good?" Dick suggested.

"But the last waffle I had was supposed to be dessert," Ella argued, but she cut herself a wedge of coconut cake anyhow, grabbing an extra fork for Dick.

"Hi, by the way. It's nice to see you."

"A waffle for dessert? But it's breakfast," Dick said, shaking his head. "Hello. Are waffles making your day extra good?"

"Actually they kind of are," Ella admitted, taking a bite of the cake. "Not that my day was so bad, but ..... it's kind of neat, choosing the specials. I can pick whatever random food I'm thinking about and make them make it."

"And the most power-mad you've gone is to have it be all waffles?" Dick asked. "You're a good person, Ella."

"There's only so evil you can get with food," Ella noted. "I mean, unless you want to start poisoning people."

"What would you do?"

"I'd probably just name everything after myself," Dick said. "And I'd make everyone ordering call me 'sir.'"

"So there'd be Scrambled Eggs Dick, and Dick toast, and ..." okay, Ella was turning red. "I really wish I still wasn't used to your name having more than one meaning."

"You see, I wasn't even thinking of that," Dick said. "You have a filthy mind."

"... either you're lying or you're trying to make me blush myself to death," Ella declared, turning to get Dick's waffle.

"I'm immune to jokes about my name at this point," Dick said. "I'd heard them all by the time I was eight. But making you blush is a bonus."

"Next you're going to tell me it's cute when I do it," Ella sighed, setting the waffle, fruit, syrup and whipped cream before him. "Sir."

"Okay, 'sir' actually sounds kind of weird coming from you," Dick said. "Just call me 'King Awesome' instead."

Ella gritted her teth. "All right, King Awesome," she told him. "Did you want anything to drink?"

"Sure. Orange juice?" Dick asked, smiling at actually hearing the name 'King Awesome.'

Ella filled a glass with juice and all but slammed it down. "There you are, King Awesome."

"Thank you," Dick said, a little thrown by the rather extreme method of putting the glass on the counter. "Is everything okay?"

"What would be wrong, King Awesome?" The name was getting some sarcasm, now. "Can I just call you Dick?"

"Yeah, of course," Dick said. "I was just joking about the name thing, you know."

"Thank you," Ella said, with a relieved smile. "Sorry. Um, I ... " She didn't have an explanation, couldn't try. "I should wipe up that juice."

"Don't worry about it, I've got it," Dick said, putting his napkin to the spilled juice to soak it up. "So everything's cool?"

"Peachy," Ella said, something flashing behind her eyes. "And that might be good, waffles with peaches cooked in..."
