Luke's Diner, Friday, June 6

It had been a quiet week, and Ella was thoughtful as she let herself into the diner on time and made sure everything was ready for the day of service, then helped herself to a breakfast of a cinnamon roll and tea.

She decided to decorate the specials board, though she didn't actually draw expecially well so her attempt at a border of twining vines may have looked more like worms.

The diner was open.

"Hey Lace..." Murdock cut himself off when he realized the gal behind the counter wasn't the one he'd been expecting. "You're not Lacey," he pointed. Yah, since that was *so* obvious at this point. "I figured she'd be here since... Oh. That's right." Murdock was more or less talking to himself at this point. "She was only here last Friday because she gave the kid the day off to go to France. That means... You're her! The kid!"

"How was France?"

Ok, he's a little off-track today, so what?

"That's me, the kid," Ella said, cherrily enough. "Most people call me Ella."

"France was nice. They have so much history there, and it's a really beautiful contry."

[OOC: Doing the same dance myself, so NP.]

"Hi Ella!" he grinned back. "I'm Murdock. France did seem nice. Raining all the time kinda stunk though. I was gonna ask your boss what she thought of France since I managed to ~~goade~~ convince her to go check it out an' all."

"I haven't talked to Lacey in a few days," Ella admitted, leaning on the counter. "She went? That's wonderful."

Glancing out the window at the ocean on the horizon, she added, "At least rain isn't a problem anymore."

"Yep." Leaning on the counter looked like a really good thing to do. So he did. Just from the opposite side of Ella.

"Looks pretty," he remarked, glancing out the window as well. "Haven't gone to check it out yet. Might do that tonight. I hear there's a party goin' on."

"I saw them setting up when I took a break, earlier," Ella nodded. "I might try to close up early so I can get to the party. I've not been to Bali H'ai ether."

"I'm a big fan of closin' up early," he grinned. Just ask Lacey. "It should be good then, huh? I haven't been to a party in a while."

"I went to the luau on the island a few weeks ago," Ella shrugged. "Mostly I want to feed dolphins."

"I didn't go to that. I was doing something else. Dolphins!" He gave her a thumbs-up and grinned. "I can dig that." Every once in a while, his thoughts were a little disorganised.

Ella looked confused. "They don't live underground, do they?"

"What the dolphins?" Murdock was looking just as confused as she was. "No, I'm pretty sure they live in water."

Ella's brow furrowed further. "So how can you dig for them?" she asked, very slowly.

"Dig for 'em? Why would you..." He broke out in a grin. "I get it. Diggin' 'em. It's an expression. It means you like something a lot."

"You know," he waggled a finger in the air, "there really ought to a translation book for around here."

"So, I could say I dig chocolate, or fairy stories," Ella said, satisfied with the expression as she tasted it. "And there should be. I like languages, perhaps I could start on it."

"Yep! Chocolate and fairies are good to dig on," he grinned. "That's a great idea too! You should totally write that."

"Should I?" Ella wondered aloud, half annoyed by the order, but also intrigued by the idea. "Where could I even start?"

"Hmm... Well, I guess you could start by askin' people what some of their common slang words and phrases are. Like with the 'dig it'. That's one right there."

Ella considered this. "And I'd need time to do it, of course," she ventured, ignoring the twist in her stomach that meant she should follow the order now. "But that could be my project for the summer?"

"Oh sure. It'll have take time. That's a lot of info to try to collect at once." He frowned in thought for a moment. "Well, if you wanted to do it that way, I reckon that'd work for a nice summer project."

Murdock of course, was completely oblivious to what he'd just done to poor Ella. To him, she just seemed like an ambitious girl wanting to take on a challenge.

If she had time, and it was about languages, Murdock could give all the orders he wanted. "I'll start this weekend," Ella said, then, remembering she was at work, asked, "I nearly forgot -- is there anything I could get you?"

"I look forward to seeing it when it's done. Well, since I'm here," he smiled, "I guess I'll take a coffee, please."

"I can manage that," Ella nodded, and went to prepare the drink. Her head was already turning with how she could start on the slang project.

"Thanks," he replied. "How long you been workin' here? You like it?"

"Since the middle of May, I think," Ella told him, setting the drink on the counter and adding a handful of creamers and sugar packets. "I like it a good deal. Most weeks it's quiet, except maybe a few squirrel protesters, but the food is good."

"What do you do in town?"

"That's about when I got here. I'm a teacher, the flight instructor to be specific." He bypassed the cream and sugars and just sipped at his coffee the way it was. "The food's good, I agree. Good pancakes."

"Have those squirrels calmed down any? What they got against Lacey anyhow?"

"She won't serve them," Ella explained, rolling her eyes a little. "She thinks it's unhygenic. They don't like being treated that way."

"But they seem to have stopped picketing, at least."

"Well, they do tend to run through the woods and carry bugs and disease. Don't they? Mabye the squirrels here don't? I dunno," he shrugged, "they do back where I'm from, so I can see her point."

"Good to hear they've stopped pestering her. I was in here one day and they were blaring music at the diner. Horrible music at that." He gave a small shudder.

But can be avoided.

So the diner doesn't go splodey.
