Playground in the Park, then Around Town [during the Welcome Picnic]

Rilla had placed signs directing visitors to where she was waiting in the playground to conduct the super-official Student Council tour of the island. As she waited for any interested guests to arrive, she pushed Jims in his stroller to keep him sleeping: it wouldn't do at all to try to talk over a screaming infant.

She'd even found copies of maps of the island so that visitors wouldn't wander around lost after her tour.

Which is just like mingling, but with fewer snacks.

Max could manage that much as he kept an eye out for Bart. There wasn't any shouts of surprise or mysterious gusts of wind to give him away.

Maybe he was learning...

"Would you like a map?" Rilla asked politely, holding one out.

"That'd be very nice, young lady," Max replied with a smile.

"You can read English?" she checked. "There are a few around here who can't."

"I can probably fudge my way through a little Spanish too," Max replied patiently. Infinite goddamn patience in this man. "A lot of immigrants here?"

"In a manner of speaking," Rilla replied carefully. "Some haven't learned to read at all, some know different alphabets...we get all types."

"I'm listening..." Yes, Rilla. Do go on.

"Well, I'm from Canada," she said, "but not in 2011."

Death had been everywhere, but rarely from the perspective of a tourist. This would be a new experience.

He brought a camera.

"Would you like a map?" Rilla asked the tall slender gentleman.

NO, THANK YOU, Death answered. I THINK I CAN FIND MY WAY WITHOUT ONE.

Well, that was certainly a voice, and Rilla found herself taking a step back. "If you change your mind, let me know..."

I WILL, Death said. He was used to that kind of reaction. BUT IF I CAN MAKE A REQUEST? COULD YOU POINT OUT THE MOST PHOTOGENIC SPOTS ON THE TOUR? I DON'T HAVE MUCH OF AN EYE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY. Or any eyes at all, as it happened. The drawbacks to being a skeleton.

"Oh, of course," Rilla said. "The view of the preserve from the dormitory lawn is lovely."

I'LL KEEP THAT IN MIND. THANK YOU, Death said.

"Hello, everyone," Rilla began a little nervously. "I'm Rilla Blythe, and I'm one of the sophomore members of student council here at Fandom High. I'm from Canada." She would skip mentioning "a hundred years ago" until she had a better feel of the visitors and any blanks looks at the mention of Canada she chalked up to typical Yankee ignorance. "We're going to go on a quick tour of the island right now and show you some of the sights--and perhaps give you restaurant suggestions for dinner tonight!--of the place your children, relatives or friends have been calling home."

She waved her hand over her head. "And we're walking..."

"We're currently on the corner of Apocalypse Avenue and Minotaur Way," Rilla said. "I didn't name them," she added hastily. "To the right, up toward the school, you'll find the pizza parlor, Cafe Fina, the church--where I've seen many of your children, I promise!--city hall, the community center, and loads of other shops. To the left, which is the way we'll eventually head, is the clinic, more restaurants and shops, the post office and the way back to the hotel where you're staying."

Tara was at work today, and was open-minded about what to expect as visitors stopped by. Though she wasn't sure how patient she'd be if somebody decided broomstick jokes were hilarious.

Seifer still had the 15% off sale going for friends and family, and he was hoping people would want to buy stuff.

He even saved some of that crappy pop stuff from that one kids channel. Just so the parents could see that they had wholesome, family music.

Rilla stopped them on the corner of Seredipity Place and Galactica Drive. "Down this way you'll find a number of abandoned warehouses--"she sounded a little uncertain about their purpose, "--a law firm and more shops. We'll go around the bend toward Goodvalor's Little Bivoli, which is a restaurant, I've heard, and then toward the tattoo shop where I have never gone."

"Here's even more restaurants," Rilla said, picking up Jims and trying to get him to stop fussing. "I quite enjoy the Lobster Hut--it reminds me a bit of home."

She used her free hand to wave the group along. "And we're walking..."

"And this is the North Gate of the school," Rilla said. "It provides the best access to the Rocky Bits for our more athletic students who enjoy running and leaping off things."

"And here's where we take our classes!" Rilla said, gesturing at the building. "It's also where the library is, and the teachers' offices. I'm certain they'll be around tomorrow and Sunday to give you glowing recommendations of our progress."

Rilla led the group to the side of the dorms where the stables, not the shooting range, was. She hadn't the least idea what the flight shed was used for.

"And here's where all of the students live," she said. "My window is right...there. We're on the second through fifth floors, with a recreational room on the ground floor where many of our clubs meet: I'm a member of the school's sorority!"

That was probably not a surprise to her tour.

"All of the trees behind us are part of the preserve. In the summer, we move into cabins for several weeks to enjoy the outdoors."

By Rilla's expression, it wasn't her favourite part of the year. "This year there was an...accident...and the cabins have been destroyed. I haven't the first idea if we'll be returning next summer."

"Accident" was sooo much better than "creepy alien invasion."

"And here we are, back on Apocalypse Avenue," Rilla said. "Here's Cafe Fina, like I was telling you about earlier, and the Community Center, which is where Jims spends the days I have classes, and the church. We're almost back to the park, if you'll just follow me a little longer..."

"And we're back to the park!" Rilla concluded with a little flourish. "I do hope I've given you a bit of help getting around the island, and I'd be happy to answer any additional questions you might have."
