Pixie Dust [afternoon sorority meeting]

The girls had been handwavily notified to meet at Pixie Dust (with a handy map attachment included for anyone who might be too new to know where it was) for today's meeting. Because it would be bad to have a meeting and forget to tell people where.

"Hey, everyone! With Valentine's Day next week and the dance this weekend- and I hope you all stopped by the table and bought your tickets-" Annie was not above a shameless plug, no. "-and we thought we could spend today doing a little preparation."

Rilla nodded enthusiastically. Dress shopping was always fun! “Styles might have changed drastically from where or when you originally come from, but it never goes out of fashion to be tastefully dressed for a formal occasion.”

Which meant she’d be judging bare shoulders and a lot of knees showing, just FYI.

Right, don't dress like a strumpet. "So today we're going to spend time in the store, and if you need help you have plenty of support here," Annie went on. "Even if you're not planning on going to the dance and don't need to get anything, it's fun to just look around and try things on, right?"

“Right!” Rilla squealed. “And they have really good bargains in the back of the shop if your dollar doesn’t go quite as far as it did in 1914...”

Just to pull a year out of thin air.

Dorothy, her hand bandaged from yesterday's incident, couldn't help but marvel at all the fashion on display in the store.

She looked down at her own turn of the century dress and suddenly felt quite plain. She shook off the feeling quickly, however, and went back to marveling at the various dresses. She was almost feeling overwhelmed by it all.

And some of the dresses looked awfully short.

"Well, I haven't been asked," Dorothy said. "But I thought about still attending, just to see what it was like. I've never been to a school dance before. It sure sounds interesting."

Anna wasn't a member of the sorority, which was why she was so surprised to see so many people at the shop when she arrived. Once she realized she'd stumbled into a meeting, she said to no one in particular, "Oh, but I--I just came to buy shoes. Is that okay?"

"They're not for the dance, though" Anna said, then looked down at her bare feet. She frowned, not for the first time wondering where her shoes had gone. She was certain she'd been wearing them when she died. "I just need shoes."

A sorority meeting that was actually a shopping trip? Hanna was so there!

Hanna considered that for a moment. "Probably red for the whole Valentine's theme. Or maybe purple, or black, or...everything?"

Stacey already had a dress for the dance, but that didn't mean she couldn't browse... and maybe check out clothes for regular wear.

"I'm mostly browsing today," Stacey said with a smile. "I have a dress already... unless I find something I like better, anyway."

One day Stacey was going to learn a valuable lesson about credit cards.

Anna was relieved to see her roommate, and came over carrying shoeboxes.

Yes. She was finally buying shoes. Rejoice, Stacey! "Okay, I need a second opinion," Anna said. "Also, hello. I'm definitely getting the red ones, but silver or purple or neither or both?" she asked, adding, "They're on clearance."

"A Valentine's dance?" Rebecca asked, with a nose-wrinkle that was just a little contemptuous. "Really? Isn't that kind of... sappy?"

Rebecca basically had the perfect icon for this tried on a few dresses, keeping her disparaging comments about the fabric quality to a minimum, before finding one (http://www.promgirl.com/shop/dresses/viewitem-PD729279) that she was especially fond of.

So. Strutting for the mirror, then. Because she was productive.

Anna grabbed the first pair of shoes she came across in her size, a pair of plain black flats, and tentatively slipped them on. The fit seemed okay, and she was definitely feeling the shoes, not the floor, under her feet. She wiggled her toes, and she could see the fabric move instead of her toes poking through it. They felt strange, after nearly sixty years without shoes, but she was sure she'd get used to it.

She took a few tentative steps without any disaster, and then walked around the store with them on until she stopped thinking about them so much. When she stopped and looked down, they were still on. "Okay," she said, relieved, and again to no one in particular. She'd spent a lot of time alone, okay? "Okay, I think this is going to work...except these are boring." So she took them off, went back to the shoe display to put them back on the shelf, and started looking for something more to her taste.

She found, in the clearance section and marked with prices even her 1958 sensibilities could stomach, not one but three pairs she liked.

"I think I need a second opinion," she muttered.

"That depends," Rebecca said, surveying the options. "Are you going for vintage as a look, or are you actually from a time when that would've been the style?"

Annie was totally loving looking at the dresses, though she knew she'd have to stick to the sale racks. Also she was maybe looking aghast at some of the dresses she was pretty sure only streetwalkers wore.

Really, Morrigan was FAR more likely to start setting things with glitter or sequins on fire, but she would attempt to be supportive should any of the girls care what she thought.

After all, she wore leather and a top that defies physics her wrap every day. Worked well enough for her, and the girls were old enough to decide how much skin they felt comfortable showing.
