Movie Theater, Wednesday Evening

"I still can't get that song out of my head," Didi told Jono as they stood in line to buy tickets for Plaything Saga III. "It might be making me nuts."

She sounded cheerful, though, and why shouldn't she be? She had a week off, she her boyfriend, she was going to get popcorn, and a Disney movie guaranteed to make her sob like a little girl was on its way. The fact all of this was soundtracked to "Hungry Like the Wolf," and had been since her day at work yesterday, was a side note.

//Well, in about ten minutes, you'll probably have some other song stuck in yer head, luv. How does that one from these movies go? 'You've got a friend in me?'//

Yeah, he wasn't even going to attempt to carry any sort of tune while he said that.

... Even if it was a really catchy tune.

"You've got a friend in me," Didi confirmed, as they shuffled forward in the line. Then, sing-song: "You've got a friend in me, When the road looks rough ahead, And you're miles and miles from your nice warm bed..."

She couldn't really carry a tune, but she'd try anyhow.

"I think I'm doomed." Not that she sounded like she minded.

//It's only th'best sort of doom,// Jono decided. //Why not give in to th'urge to sing when you get it, right?//

Or to play guitar. Or to tap a rhythm on one's knee with one's hands. Whatever worked.

"And that's why I love you," Didi told him, with an easy squeeze of his hand. "Not many men are big enough to appreciate my love for Disney and singing badly in public."

Jono shut his eyes and laughed at that, squeezing her hand right back.

//Yes, well. Th'Disney is an acquired taste,// he admitted. //Th'singing is adorable, in its own special way.//

"In a 'can't carry a tune worth crap' kind of special way?" Didi inquired with an arched eyebrow, then beamed at the ticket clerk. "Two, please, and a medium popcorn and a large coke."

//In a bit more of a 'Didi is singing about me having a friend in her' sort of way,// Jono corrected lightly, pulling his wallet out of his pocket and paying the clerk. //It's all... light, and happy, and such.//

Because Jono was so frequently a bastion of all that was light and happy and such. Truly.

Truly, which was why he got a slightly dubious look from Didi. "Life's more fun when you're light and happy," she answered, heading back toward the theater. "Besides, that Swedish movie about sobbing puppies was all sold out."

//And, see, I had my heart set on that one. Nothing puts me in a better mood than sobbing puppies.//

Total deadpan. It was easy to do when you didn't actually need to use your face in order to communicate.

"Mmm, especially if they're Swedish," Didi reminded him. "Then they're all thoughtful and melancholy. It's artsier."

She picked her way to a seat near the center of the theater and flopped into it.

//Well, that depends mostly on th'breed,// Jono decided, depositing his rear into the seat beside hers in a somewhat less floppy manner. //They have a sort of beagle there, I think. Very artsy, beagles.//

... Yes. Yes they were.

"... beagles?" Didi asked, then remembered she was the one who had started this insane conversation. "Right. Beagles. Though of course you need chihuahuas and miniature poodles for a certain frisson."

Jono had to take a moment to seriously consider where in the world this insane conversation was actually headed, while the previews started. Some film about some villain who was being out-villained by some other villain. How exciting. Some other film about some guy who climbed into a tower and got his arse kicked by hair. Fascinating.

//Chihuahuas and poodles,// he settled on. //So, really, it's a multinational Swedish movie about sobbing puppies. That is quite artistic.//

"The most artistic thing ever," Didi confirmed, settling against his shoulder. "Hey, would I look good if I grew my hair like that? It seems impractical."

//I think you'd probably close it in doors often enough,// Jono said, handing her his expert opinion on long hair, and all. //Unless you managed to learn hair-fu, like that gel there. I suppose we'd have to get you a chameleon to top off th'whole motif, then.//

If she was settling against his shoulder, he was going to slip his arm around hers. My, that worked nicely, didn't it?

It did, and he was rewarded with a soft, pleased sigh.

"Hair-fu's probably trickier in real life than it is in animation," she said wistfully. "Too bad. It'd be a fun power to have."

//Friend of mine, back at the Academy? He can do pretty much th'same thing with his skin,// Jono shared. Because that didn't paint a nasty mental image at all. //I don't suppose doing th'same with hair would be too much different, really.//

Who knew, right?

"Not really," Didi said, not at all bothered by the concept. (It helped to be from a comics universe, in considering such things.)

The trailers were going on awhile, so it felt okay to keep talking. "Got any plans for your break week?"

//What's left of it, you mean?// Jono shook his head, glancing her way. //Not particularly, no. //Maybe practise my guitar some more. Do some reading. Open th'library even though I probably won't particularly need to. Paint Jak's side of th'room bright pink while he's out.//

...

//Probably not that last part.//

"He might appreciate it," Didi said.

No, he wouldn't.

"Did he go home to get shot at again?"

//Most likely,// Jono sighed. //Honestly, I don't think he's happy unless somebody is shooting at him, nowadays.//

Which worried him, yes, but what was he going to do about it?

It worried Didi, too, which showed in the way her lips pursed. "I hope he doesn't get really hurt," she said. "Not that we can do anything, but I'm really not a fan of death wishes."

//Nor am I,// Jono agreed. //That said, he does seem to have a certain... finesse, when it comes to handling rough situations.//

This from the boy who had blown up enemy drop ships in the Water Slums of Jak's world with his face, yes.
