Didi arrived at work today cheerful and full of plans that she'd made following her conversation with Jono yesterday.

It was scaring Apu.

She put not one, but two signs in the window today:

Confused about the Weekend?
Talk to Death.
No, really
Price: Ten Cents or one good joke

and

Squishy Flavors: Pineapple, Kiwi, Beef Gravy

She settled in attentively behind the counter. She'd heard something on the radio about a new owner of the shop, and she was curious to meet her new boss.

Oh, now, this was going to get very interesting. ♥

Shunsui hadn't really done research on his employees except for what he was able to finangle out of conversation with Apu-san, and he'd been able to discern that, besides Apu-san himself, there were two other regular employees, both of who were female, which pleased him greatly.

So the door gave that lovely little jingle as Shunsui breezed through the door with all the appropriate fluttering, after giving the sign a very brief but thoughtful glance, and could only wonder. Thenhe found the girl behind the counter and couldn't help smiling.

Very interesting indeed ♥.

"Ah, now, my dear ♥," he asked, leaning on the counter comfortably, "would you happen to be Didi-chan ♥ or Hope-chan ♥ Or some other -chan ♥ I should get to know?"

"Didi," the girl answered, giving him an equally appraising look before flashing a smile. He felt like a psychopomp: Innnnnteresting. "Hi. D'you like my sign?"

"I'm intrigued ♥!" Shunsui admitted with a chuckle, glancing briefly its way before giving the girl another smile. "And what if you're not confused ♥?"

The only thing he was confused about was the lack of ladies.

"Then I'm out a dime," Didi said with mock regret. "Guess I didn't really want that gumball..."

"Ahhhh ♥," said Shunsui with a pleased sounding smile, "how do you know I didn't have a good joke, hm ♥?"

Like one about Death and a Death God walk into a general store...

"I don't know that," Didi admitted. "Want to tell me one? I'm pretty easy to please. Even if I can't get a gumball with a joke."

"I'm not very good with jokes ♥," said Shunsui, "I'm a very serious man ♥."

Even as he said it with a very grave tone, drawing his hat down to create more dramatic shadows, his eyes were dancing. Besides, he felt the situation was a joke in and of itself. He takes a break from working for Death, only to have what was Death working for him. So poetic! It made him absolutely giddy.

"But you can have all the gumballs you'd like, anyway ♥. I'm the boss, and I say so ♥."

And, again, his giddiness did a poor job of hiding behind the serious demeanor his put into those words.

"Somehow you don't strike me as the very serious type," Didi said, smiling back at him. She, too, felt the poetry in the situation; Death, working for a mere death god -- and, apparently, being paid in gumballs.

"So, you bought the store?" she asked. "How'd that happen?"

To be honest, Shunsui himself didn't really know the answer to that one. There were a lot of different pieces, of course. He was sick of all the drama llamas prancing around Soul Society, he couldn't bear to see the place torn up from the inside with everyone fighting and Aizen trying to uproot things. It seemed like a good idea at the time. There was a lot of sake involved.

But the answer he decided to give was actually probably the most accurate in his decision:

"I liked the name ♥."

"It's a good name," Didi agreed. "Earth and sky, right? I think Turtle's just for the girl who used to run it, but it's still a really great name."

Which reminded her that he hadn't shared his own. She gave him a speculative look.

The look was duly noted, which left Shunsui wondering not only how he forgot that part, but how he could work it smoothly into the conversation. Because the direction of a conversation was based on two things: the flow of the sake and the flow of the words.

"Makes you wonder," he said thoughtfully, "about the canary ♥. My own name is Shunsui Kyōraku, which, while very striking, does not make nearly as nice a store name, don't you think ♥?"

Dinah had been running through town, headphones on, and run right past the sign... then jogged back, standing in place.

Seriously?

What the heck. She walked in, enjoying the air-conditioning, and went up and down the aisles for minute, before stopping in front of Didi with a slightly anxious smile. "Hey. Pineapple Squishy? Please?"

Aaaand... "Is that sign for real?"

"Hi, Dinah," Didi said flippantly. "We really do have beef gravy squishies, yeah. I'm not sure who orders them."

"Didiii," Dinah complained, then had to grin. Because, come to think of it, those were a pretty gross idea. "Someone who's a carnivore? Maybe?" She shook her head, pulling a five out of the top of pocket for the Squishy. "I meant getting answers from Death. I wish I knew a good joke to tell."

"That I can help you with," Didi said, leaning forward to give Dinah an interested look. "I like jokes even if they're pretty bad, actually."

Dinah laid down the five, and blinked. "Wait... you?" Had Didi ever mentioned this before? Maybe at some point waaay in the past, right when Dinah was hearing things like "my dad is a demon" from Raven and "my dad is Lucifer" from Fiona and just kind of trying to tread water about it all. Not that this was in the same class. She tried to think of a New Gotham joke that Didi wouldn't have heard, and asked, "How does that work, exactly?"

"It's a thing for my universe," Didi said, ever so precisely. She tended to forget who she told; it had never been a secret. "One day every century, Death takes human form to taste the tang of mortal life. My day ... got extended, so here I am."

She could have told Dinah more -- she had a sense Dinah was from, if not her world, one not so terribly far away -- but that struck her as a place to stop for now.

She reached for the $5. "You wanted pineapple, right?"

"Yes please," Dinah said, a little weakly, trying to process that. "Okay, so... you remember, being Death." She paused, then said, "Right. Lame joke, here you go. How many caped crusaders does it take to change a light bulb?"

"No, I am Death, just as much as my sister is Delirium," Didi corrected, though her tone was still fairly friendly. "I'm just short a couple powers at the moment."

She shook her head. "I don't know. How many?"

Well. Fiona's mom was... another Death. And. It wasn't like she hadn't seen just as unbelievable only a few days ago.

"None. They like the dark." Dinah made a little 'ta-da' motion with her hands, then smiled. "Told you it was lame. I can still give you a dime... since you're Death." She paused. "I don't even know where to start, I have so many questions."

...her boyfriend was rooming with Death. Something to never explain to Barbara.

Not only was Dinah's boyfriend rooming with Death, he thought she was awesome. Barbara probably didn't need to know.
