The Perk - Saturday Morning

Goose had woken up as a child this morning and so hadn’t gone for his normal early morning run and instead had decided to go and have as many cups of coffee as he could because his guardian wasn’t around and couldn’t say no to how much sugar and caffeine he could have.

This was going to end badly.

One of the baristas had been there the last time this happened and sighed but she kept giving him coffee. It was clearly going to be an adult Goose’s problem when he went back to normal.

Goose was currently on his fourth cup of coffee and was showing no signs of slowing down.

Tisarwat knew she should have just stayed in the nice apartment with all the fancy teasets and made her own tea that morning! But sometimes, you just wanted a nice tea from a nice teashop, but, obviously, she was not getting that here!

"That is not tea!" she declared, mildly horrified, when she caught sight of that teabag dangling over the hot water.

Not to mention, they weren't even wearing gloves!

This was a mistake!

Goose looked up from where he was intently drinking his fourth cup of coffee, “what is it then?” he asked curiously because he actually didn’t really know tea just coffee.

Tisarwat's very boring, very dull brown eyes rolled so hard they practically went back into her skull, and then she snorted.

"A tragedy!" she decided, dramatically. "And uncivilized! What kind of place puts their tea in a little bag?"

She looked judgingly toward the other kid's cup as well, her expression a little pityingm "You didn't actually get some, did you?"

“No, I’ve never actually had tea before,” Goose told her, “I wanted to try and have as much as coffee as possible, I’m not supposed to drink this,” he confessed, his eyes wide as he looked at her.

There was a reason for that but it wouldn’t be him dealing with the consequences.

"Coffee?" Tisarwat's nose wrinkled. "I never even heard of that!"

But if the tea was anything to go by, she bet it was disgusting!

"Why aren't you supposed to have it?" she then asked, regarding this other kid and his probsvly ill-gotten gains suspicioisly. "Is it bad for you?"

“Coffee is amazing!” Goose said happily as he finished his fourth cup and the barista sighed and got him another one.

He tilted his head, “I’m not supposed to have it because I’m a Supertrooper,” he said, apparently child Goose was not as reserved as adult Goose, “my guardian says it’s bad for me but he’s not here, so what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him right?”

"No," Tisarwat agreed, brows lifted at the insolence of this other child, "but it might hurt you. What's a supertrooper, anyway? I've never heard of those before. Are they a new kind of ancillary?"

“I’m a super soldier,” he told her, “or I will be when I finish growing and complete my programming ,” he told her, “I’m the youngest …it’s still a few years away, but we will be Earth’s new army when it’s all complete,”

Goose was normally not this forthcoming about any of this and once he got through the after effects of the sugar rush this was going to be rather awkward.

That all sounded...well, fake, but if Tisarwat was honest, she didn't really follow politics and things with the ships that closely. It wasn't like she was planning on going into the armed forces after her aptitudes. She just wanted to get a nice comfy desk job somewhere that had a really fun night life! She was going to get cool eye implants and everything one day!

At least, that was the plan.

But, still, even though she wasn't interested in any of that, she supposed it was polite to make conversation and ask about it.

"What kind of ship do you want to be on? And I don't think I've heard of Earth before. Is that recently annexed? Do they have good tea? Is it a fun planet?"

Goose blinked a lot at the range of questions, most people didn't want to talk to him for so long and it took him a while to figure out where to answer first.

"Earth is in the Sol System," he explained, "we did recently join the League of Planets, I ... I don't know what annexed means," he wasn't sure if it had come up in any of their classes but the term was unfamiliar. "I'm not sure about tea though, I've not really had experience with it,"

"What do you mean by ship?" he asked curiously, tilting his head at her as he wasn't sure what she meant by what ship he wanted to be on.

Tisarwat sighed a little, rolling her eyes again because she couldn't believe she had to actually explain these things to someone, but, clearly, she was dealing with someone from outside the Radch, so she should probably feel bad for him and be helpful.

"Annexed means that you've become a part of the Radch," she started, "which I've never heard of the League of Planets, so you're probably not, and I am so sorry. That's got to be really hard! But in the Radch, we have three different kinds of ships most people serve on: a Sword, a Mercy, or a Justice. Most people want to serve on a Sword, those are the battleships, but I think that sounds like too much work."

"Oh," Goose's eyes widened as he listened to her explain the different ships, "that sounds like it'd be fun," Goose had a different idea on what fun was, "what ship do you want to serve on?" he asked.
