"No, we're not 'in competition with' the Mexican restaurant. A, they're not even open for breakfast, and B, they don't even serve waffles. There's no competition. Don't pit two bad bitches against each other, jeez." Raiden couldn't believe they were even having this conversation.

The good thing about having a supportive spouse was when the kids were driving you up the wall, he could tell her to get out of the house. So, breakfast. She'd bring something home probably.

"Nice place," she said.

"Oh, thank you!" Raiden exclaimed. "I'm pretty proud of it so far, although I can't take all the credit. My brother did all the decorating and stuff. I just feed people."

"That's really the most important part," she said with a smile.

Raiden beamed at her. "It really is. Have we met before?" He wasn't great at the memory thing. "I'm Raiden. This is my--well, one of my restaurants. I also run the pizza place."

"Jaina," she said. "My family has definitely patronized the pizza place. A lot."

[carbsliftthespirit]

"Excellent choice. It is the best food," Raiden said, earnestly, while standing in his non-pizza restaurant. Look, he wasn't going to mess with facts.

"Should I go there instead?" she joked.

"I mean," Raiden said. "They're not open yet and they don't serve mimosas?" Strikes one and two.

"Yeah we're doing mimosas," she said immediately. "I've earned it."

"You have earned it!" Raiden agreed. He didn't know what Jaina had done to earn mimosas, but he wholeheartedly believed she deserved them.

"Do you have a favorite?" She'd trust him.

[carbsliftthespirit]

"A favorite mimosa?" Conversationally nimble, he was not.

[solo_sword]

"Yeah. Like a recommendation."

She might not know what she was asking of him.

"Well, orange is obviously the classic," Raiden told her. "A lot of people like the cranberry one. Oh, or pomegranate, that's also good. Or you can get a Bellini, which is the same idea but with peach nectar. And with the specials, I guess it depends on if you're in the mood for sweet or savory. Or both!" She could always do both.

"There's a decent chance I take some of both home," she admitted. "The kids barely know what churros are and they'd be very insulted if they didn't get any."

Even if they were being monsters.

"Oh, no, we can't have that!" Raiden exclaimed. "I can have an order ready for them when you're ready to go, if you want?"

"I would love that, thank you," she said. And I'll get the huevos rancheros and the cranberry. Maybe a double."

Could you do double mimosas? Anyway.

"Could I have one of each, please?" Steve asked, entirely too perky for this early on a weekend morning.

"Just the specials, or the whole menu?" Listen, this was not Raiden's first encounter with the supersoldier metabolism, and he didn't know what kind of workout Steve may or may not have had that morning.

"Let's start with just the specials and go from there," Steve said with a smile. "Good morning!"

"Sounds like a plan!" Raiden agreed. "And so far it has been. I didn't even have to stay out too late last night because demon activity in Baltimore is down aaaaand now I've jinxed it."

Steve laughed. "You probably have," he agreed. "How many demons are normally around Baltimore?"

"Not a ton," Raiden told him. "A little bit of shade activity, some troublemaker coming through here or there...it's not exactly a hot spot. But, y'know." He shrugged. "Gotta keep up with things, or they could get out of control."

"I definitely understand that," Steve said with a smile. "It's like keeping up with training. If you don't know what it normally looks like, you can't tell when it gets better or worse."

"Yeah. I mean, I wish I didn't have to do any of it, but." Raiden shrugged. "Not up to me!"

Steve gave a sympathetic smile. "I completely understand that."

Raiden wondered what Steve's equivalent of 'the archangels breathing down his neck via Lazarus' was, but just asked him, "So what's been going on with you lately? I saw you got some new dogs? I don't know much about dogs, but they seemed nice." And energetic.

"We have two new puppies," Steve said. "They have a lot of energy."

"That's nice. We don't do pets in my family for, uh, fairly depressing reasons." Immortality vs. short lifespan reasons. "So. Yeah."

"You're welcome to meet them!" Steve said.

[carbsliftthespirit]

"I'd love to!" Raiden exclaimed. "Just, uh, maybe not in the restaurant. Health code and all that. I've gotta look into some outdoor seating."

Steve grinned. "That's why I didn't bring them. Well, that and I'm not sure how they'd react in a place that smells like breakfast food."

Raiden grinned at that. "Can't blame 'em. It does smell great in here, if I do say so myself. And we had a cat in last week--I think it might have been Liliana?--so. The dogs probably would not have--well, they might have enjoyed that, but she probably wouldn't." And then they definitely wouldn't.

Steve laughed. "I think she's human shaped again. I read notes about her class on Thursday. Did she enjoy breakfast?"

"Oh, that's good for her," Raiden said. "Not having thumbs blows. And yeah, I think she did? It's hard to tell with cats--they're so judgey-lookin'--but she didn't try to shred anything and she ate all her shellfish, so...I'm taking that as a win."

"That sounds like very high praise from a cat," Steve said. "Tony sometimes turns into one."

"I bet Daman would turn into a cat," Raiden said thoughtfully. "Maybe Alastair, too." Oh, right. "Those are two of my brothers. I turn into a dog." This could not possibly come as a surprise.

"How many brothers do you have?" Steve asked, looking interested. "I was an outlier as an Irish-Catholic only child."

Had Steve missed the whole deadly sins rigamarole this whole time? Mildly awkward, what with the 'Irish Catholic' bit, but he seemed like a cool guy. "There are seven of us. And we're not actually, like, genetically related. It's a whole...thing. We decided to be brothers when we were kids."

"Family doesn't have to be blood," Steve agreed. "I think that's swell."
