Dite's Decadent Delights, Monday Afternoon
Most of Dite's business was online now, which suited Kathy and her schedule just fine. But there was still a brick and mortar store on the island and it didn't feel right to just leave it closed all the time, so Kathy still made the occasional trip out to the island to open it up, clean, and try to lure in the occasional in-person customer.
Of course, opening and cleaning didn't take terribly long when it had been awhile since she'd opened, and the whole 'luring someone in' wasn't really particularly active, so maybe an hour after she'd shown up, Kathy was behind the counter, working on her syllabus for the summer class she was teaching here. It felt a lot like senior year, before everything fell apart: in the store on the island, doing schoolwork to improve her application to college.
Hopefully her entrance to Yale would go more smoothly than Stanford.

Talk to Kathy
Re: Talk to Kathy
And so, since she stepped into the store again, consider her lured.
(Although some of the credit for that may have belonged to a certain demon.)
Re: Talk to Kathy
"Hello," Kathy said, looking up to offer Octavia a smile as she came into the store. "Planning on just browsing or is there something I can help you with."
She didn't immediately recognize or remember Octavia, but then, it had been a long three years for both of them.
Re: Talk to Kathy
... And the knowledge that Duke had thrown Kathy across the diner the first time his trouble had been triggered on the island.
Neither of which she was eager to bring up, especially to lead with. She nodded her greeting. "Not sure," she admitted. "Haven't been in here in a while."
Re: Talk to Kathy
She frowned a bit, tilting her head to try to remember. If she'd had been in here within the last five years, then Kathy would have been the one working, pretty much by default. It took nearly thirty seconds, but then, Kathy had always had a ridiculous memory for things people had said. "...Octavia?" she checked, snapping her fingers. "From a century after the apocalypse. Living with your brother!"
Re: Talk to Kathy
"When I'm not staying on a ship, yeah," Octavia replied, eventually, with a small nod. "Didn't really think you'd remember."
She wouldn't have been able to place any of the customers who'd come in when she'd still been working at the music store, for one thing.
Re: Talk to Kathy
Re: Talk to Kathy
"Yeah," Octavia said, more mild than wry but still leaning a little bit in that direction. "Not a lot of people around here know what that's like."
Re: Talk to Kathy
Which was generally a good thing, but sometimes made things a little lonely.
"Hopefully you have a better idea of what the store is for?"
Re: Talk to Kathy
She trailed off for a second, looking for the right way to put it.
"A lot of things are different now."
Re: Talk to Kathy
Looks like the past three years had been pretty good to both of them. Or, at least, good enough that they'd been able to start moving past where they'd been.
Re: Talk to Kathy
She let that sit there for a moment.
"Anyway," she said, with a glance around the store. "How squirrel-proof is this place?"
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
Ronin woofed and got up to his feet, leaving his new silicone chew toy behind as he went to find any and all squirrels in the establishment.
When the last had been sent packing, Kathy turned back to Octavia. "So what can I help you with?"
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
And even then, she was really only concerned with keeping one specific purchase from one specific person.
Octavia's head tilted just a fraction. "Can you think of anything that'd be a... fun thing --" Why yes, she said 'fun' just a little bit like it was a foreign word to her. "-- to hide in someone's office?"
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
"Absolutely," she replied. "But it depends on what you mean by fun. We've got dirty candy, if you just want to make them smile. We've got various toys and things, if you want to hide something you want them to use. Or we could go a little further afield with things that they will look at and think of you. What did you have in mind?"
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
Octavia paused, looking off to the side as she thought it over.
Then she shrugged. "I guess I'm aiming for maybe a laugh, and thinking of me?"
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
She set aside both candy and chocolate lollipops, mostly focused on female genitalia. Dick pops were fun but also more obtrusive.
"We also have dirty dice, which look pretty innocent so long as no one else is nearby to read them - though they're actually really stupid to play with and are good for a laugh when you actually roll them and you can see what they come up with." Kathy placed a few sets of dice next to the candy she'd found.
"I also have another suggestion if you decide you're looking for something with a little more...oomph. It's not quite what you've asked for, but still in the same vein, I think."
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
She looked up from looking over the lollipops. "Sure," she said, with a tiny nod. "I mean, you know everything you're selling better than I do, right? I'm open to suggestions."
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
She handed it over for Octavia to examine. "A lot more intense than what you said you're looking for, so no pressure here. But if you're looking for something to make the jump from 'cute and makes them think of me' to something that's actual foreplay but at a distance? This might come in handy."
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
But she still considered the toy just as thoroughly as she had everything else. It just didn't change her initial impression, no matter how nice the material and how sleek the design.
She held it back out to Kathy. "I don't think this is really us." Well. Her, anyway. "Seems kinda... weirdly impersonal." She was pretty sure that was an impression that was not universal. Hence 'weirdly'. "Not really a fan of distance."
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
She gave Octavia a soft smile. "Knowing what feels good emotionally is just as important as knowing what feels good physically. You're never gonna use something that makes you feel uncomfortable."
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
When Octavia said she wasn't a fan of distance, she really meant... any. But that was neither here or there because she didn't really ahve the words or the need to articulate that right now.
Ditto for the way she neatly ignored the rest of what Kathy had said, and just pressed on. "You have sex swings here?" she asked. "Obviously not for the office, I'm just -- someone mentioned them and I've never seen one before."
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
It was hung in a corner, so there couldn't be any actual swinging, but people could at least sit down and figure out how it worked. "There are many different kinds," she added. "Some can be placed over door frames, some come with their own stands, and others need to be bolted into the ceiling. You'll need to know how much weight the swing can handle and it doesn't hurt to check the stability of the ceiling if that's the way you're going. If this is a purchase you're thinking about making, there are lots of things to keep in mind, so either I can tell you about the differences or offer some reputable websites to do your own research."
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
The distraction came from how she was doing exactly that, looking the swing over, tugging on the straps a little as she tried to figure out what it was like in use.
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
"Who even comes up with these things?"
She'd asked something similar when she'd been here the first time. Now, though, her tone was less exasperated and a little more... amused mixed with wonderment.
Faint on both parts, but still.
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
Look, Octavia was looking at stuff, she figured a bit of privacy was in order.
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
She snorted. "There's nothing necessary about any of this." Her earliest sexual experiences were in a cave, okay? "People just have more time to invent things."
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
"Fair," she said, after a beat. "I didn't think of that."
No, Tavi, you'd made that pretty obvious already. But, again: cave. She'd never been very good at taking her own physical comfort into consideration, let alone hypothetical other people with different needs.
"But people still have more time here to invent things. Guess some of them actually make sense, though."
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
She was tempted to point out that a lot of the ridiculous devices shown on TV had been originally invented for disabled people, but then marketed for a profit but--nah. That would come across as preachy and she'd left that behind with her teens.
"All that free time."
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
This was much better for everyone.
"Pretty sure candy shaped like dicks doesn't help anyone," Octavia replied, in vague agreement, as she put the last of the slings back where it belonged. "I don't think I'm in the market for one of these right now," she added, after a beat. "For one thing, I should probably not buy things for someone's boat without talking to them about it."
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
"I'd agree with you about the candy dicks part," Kathy said. "That's just part of humanity's enduring obsession with people's bits."
Which she couldn't complain about, because it was her job, but still. It could be her job and still not be anything she took seriously.
Re: Talk to Kathy (NFB)
But that had been almost constant wartime, and her people were kind of stoic and reserved, so.
Re: Talk to Kathy
"Kathy, Kathy, Kathy!"
Incoming hug!
Re: Talk to Kathy
Kathy'd had another reason to text Alluka to let her know she was on-island. Hell, two reasons: news and a surprise.
Re: Talk to Kathy
Which was, always, the best reason for someone to be around.
"We're doing great!" she said happily, squishing Kathy. "My burn barrel paperwork has gone through! Finally! And, and Nanika wants a hat! But she won't tell me what kind of hat!"
She was being the worst sort of customer but that was alright, Alluka loved that sort of challenge.
"How about you?" she asked eagerly. "Are you busy tonight? Did you want to eat dinner with me?"
Re: Talk to Kathy
Then, ever so casually, she asked, "How would you feel about that being a regular Thursday thing? You and me, having dinner here on the island?"
Re: Talk to Kathy
That was a no-brainer and answered before the meaning of it really began to sink in.
"Oh! Does, does that mean you're going to be here every Thursday?!"
Alluka had gotten the paperwork to sign up for classes but had honestly assumed she'd gotten it as a mistake and hadn't bothered to read the options since, obviously, they weren't for her!
Re: Talk to Kathy
Re: Talk to Kathy
Because that was the most important part, it really was.
"Are you why I got a thing asking me to pick my classes?" she asked excitedly. "What are you teaching?!"
Re: Talk to Kathy
Because the idea of trying to teach people older than she was was still moderately terrifying.
