Friday Morning, Weasley's Wizard Wheezes

Fred yawned, stretched and got out of bed, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes and preparing for another exciting day in the shop. He peered out the window, as it looked a bit paler than usual and saw that it was snowing outside!

"Odd weather for July," he mused. But then again, it had rained pudding in the past, so compared to that, snow in July really wasn't so unusual. He shrugged, pulled on his work robes, and went downstairs to open the shop.

[ooc: Fred's mun apologizes to all for not being around lately--family in town, new weetiny kitten, work, etc; it's been crazybusy. I shall be around much more now]

Pippi flounced her way over to Fred's shop after her class with the Doctor.

She was a little wary of the weather because she recalled the last time it was colder on the island then on the mainland, but was determined not to let it spoil her enjoyment of the snow while she could.

Before it started trying to kill people or something.

She opened the door and jumped over the threshold, landing where the mat usually was with both feet.

There might be somebody with her.

Molly caught up soon after, coming from her Flight workshop. "Hey, Pippi. I got here," she said with a grin.

"Great! I brought... 'The Object In Question'." she said.

"Super!" Molly entered the shop and looked around. "I've never actually been in here before," she said.

"Oh it's great fun!" Pippi said. "We went to the one in London, I'm so glad they opened up here too."

The mat screamed loudly. "My eye! My eye! Oh for the love of Pete!"

"It's Fred, thanks," said Fred dryly. He looked up at Pippi and Molly.

"Good day, ladies. Now what exactly is the 'object in question'?"

"This," Pippi said producing a slinky (http://www.teachingtools.com/Slinky/slinky.html). "Is called a 'slinky'."

She held each end in her hands and slinked it back and forth.

"It walks down stairs, ~~alone or in pairs~~ but not up again, or around corners. ~~Or up walls or on the ceiling.~~ We were wondering if you could fix that and if you could fix that for more then one of these things?"

"Yes," Molly said. "Like, oh, say, a hundred of them?"

Fred raised his eyebrows at Molly.

"A hundred of them? And what exactly do you plan to use them for? or, is it just safer if I don't know?"

He took the slinky from Pippi and slinked it (for lack of better verbage) up and down in his hands.

"And you want them to be able to walk up stairs and around corners?"

Molly looked at Pippi and then back at Fred. "Maybe better if you don't know, but we can tell you about it later if you want," she said.

She watched him slink the slinky (it is perfectly good verbage). "Yes. We want them to be able to climb back up to the top of the stairs and start over once we send them down. And they'll need to go around corners since most staircases aren't just one straight shot. So, if they could, I don't know, crawl snake like around a corner until they got to the next set of stairs, that would be excellent."

"We don't want to hurt anybody or anything." Pippi offered. "Just tie up the staircase for a little while."

She grins impishly.

Molly grinned in a very similar fashion.

Fred grinned as well.

"Sounds like most excellent mischief making to me," he said. He slinked the slinky again, thinking. "It'll take some doing, but I think I can make it work. I'll just need a bit of time. Tell you what--let me borrow this slinky for experimentation, and come back on Sunday. I should have it all worked out by then, and if you find the (ahem) modifications acceptable, we shall proceed with the rest of the slinkies from there. What do you think?"

"Brilliant!" Pippi said hopping. "Yes, you are most welcome to experament on that slinky. It's why I brought it... Just make sure it doesn't suffer!"

They wouldn't want Blair to find out and stage a sit in for slinky rights or something.

Molly gave Pippi a look, but went with it. "Yes, we don't want any slinkies harmed in the making of this... thing."

Fred smiled.

"Don't worry, ladies. This slinky is perfectly safe with me. Any experimentation that may have, er, adverse side effects, are always done with the consent of the experiment's subject. That is to say, my brother and I."

Molly smiled broadly. "Thank you very much," she said with a polite nod. "We will see you on Sunday."

Pippi was actually talking about the slinky but, oh well.

"Yes, thank you!" Pippi said bobbing a curtsey.

Fred was talking about the slinky too. He had never campaigned for slinky rights, but he was sure that Hermione, who had a thing for oppressed house elves, would probably join Blair in campaigning for the freedom of slinkies everywhere, if she heard that it was being mistreated.

"You are most welcome," said Fred, bowing the girls out of the shop.

Molly purposefully stepped on the mat as she left the shop.

"Arrggghhh!" the mat shrieked. "If I'm going to be trodden on, could you at least do it with *nice* shoes?!"

Fred chuckled.

"Don't mind the mat," he called to Molly. "It's just sulking."

After the door had shut, he set the slinky down on the counter and looked at it. He tapped it lightly with his wand.

"You and I have quite a weekend ahead of us if I'm to train you up properly," he said.

The slinky wagged (if slinkies can wag, and I say they can) enthusiastically.
