Galactiga Point: Wednesday Afternoon

Jane has decided she really likes the ocean. She had never been to the shore before and she found if peaceful.

She's picks her way out on a rock formation that sticks out into the water and sits there letting the spray hit her face.

Just because she has a bottle of bourbon, doesn't mean that she's going to drink it.

But she probably will.

River came walking along the beach, feeling both happy and melancholy at the same time. It happened sometimes and it was an odd feeling. Occasionally she spun around, her arms outstretched.

She had heard something about someone being turned into a mermaid. River had never seen a mermaid.

Then she noticed a woman sitting on a rock. She doesn't recognise this woman, but her clothes look very familiar. Like something worn on the border moons. Curious, River sneaked out to the rock.

Jane is talking to herself. Or possibly talking to nobody. Or maybe to somebody who's dead.

She's thinking a lot about her friend Bill. Who was murdered. And how much she misses him

She misses him a whole lot. It's like a huge hold in her chest that she often tries to fill with bourbon.

The woman's thoughts flood River's mind and she feels the loss and longing. It makes her want to cry. Coming closer, River asks softly: "Does the bourbon help?" She is sincerely curious. She knows people use alcohol to go numb when things hurt to much. She just fell asleep when trying to drink.

Jane didn't expect for there to be anybody else out there and leapt about tree feet into the air when River spoke.

"Oh." she said with a hand on her chest and the other fixing her hat. "Sorry... Ya sorta crept up on me there... Didn't see you..."

A wide grin spread on River's face. The woman spoke like someone from home! Well, not like someone from the core planets like herself, but like the Serenity crew.

"Sorry, ain't my meaning to startle ya," River said, quickly changing into the same accent. "I'm River," she added.

"Oh, well that's alright." Jane nodded. "I was rather lost in thought, probably wouldn't have heard ya if you'd been a herd of buffalo. Name's Jane. Jane Canary, proud to meet ya River."

Buffalo?

"Mind if I take a seat?" River asked. "So where are ya from, Jane?"

The thoughts she picked up from Jane wasn't that clear on the matter.

Jane's thoughts on anything but how much she misses Bill are unclear in general.

"Most recently, I come from a mining camp called Deadwood."

"Oh, haven't heard of that," River said. Which was true. "What planet is it on?"

"Uh, this one?"

Phoebe had been swimming around when she heard people on the beach, she surged up onto the rocks to see what was going on.

Jane was a little startled by the sudden appearance of the woman from the water... Then she was a lot startled by the fact that she was half fish.

She looked at the woman, then down at her unopened bottle, then back at the woman, and so on.

"Hi," Phoebe waved in a friendly manner.

River waved back to Phoebe. "Is it fun?" she asked.

Phoebe nodded at River and smiled again. "It's a lot of fun. I'm enjoying myself."

Phoebe did indeed look very happy.

"It looks fun," River said, smiling.

"Want to come swimming?"

"Yes." River waded out into the sea, not bothering to take her dress off. "Where do you sleep was a mermaid? Above or below the surface?"

Phoebe looked incredibly joyful that River was going to swim with her. "Last night I took a nap on the ocean floor, but then I also napped on the rocks at Selkie Cove. So I guess I can sleep in both places."

"Uh... Howdy." Jane waved back weakly.

"I'm Phoebe."

"Jane..." she said. "Jane Canary."

"Nice to meet you, Jane. Whatcha doing?"

"Never been this close to the ocean before." Jane said nodding out to sea. "It's strange to me, but not as strange as some of the other stuff I seen lately... I always knew it was there, just never been... So... That kinda makes it familiar in its unfamiliarity... If that makes any fuckin sense. Which it probably doesn't."

Phoebe cocked her head. "It does make sense and I'm sorry that you haven't seen the ocean before. It's wonderful in here. Where are you from?"
