[Fast Eddie's, Tuesday Night]

Alec walked into Fast Eddie's with Jaye, their arrival heralded by the pinging of arcade games and the thunderous crash of bowling balls visiting destruction upon a set of pins.

There was pool as well, but it was a fairly quiet game, in comparison.

Jaye leads the way over to the ball rack, saying, "You need one of these and goofy shoes."

"The ball I get," he says. "What kind of shoes?"

"Fugly rented ones, but they keep you from slipping and embarrassing yourself on the lanes," she says. "They sell them like regular shoes now, I don't get it."

He picks up a 12-pound ball and weights it in one hand thoughtfully. "Okay, got the ball. Do we really have to wear the shoes if they're that bad?"

"Once? I went barefoot. And I got yelled at but it was totally worth not having to wear them," she informs him, randomly grabbing a red one off the rack.

"I could do barefoot," he says brightly, and tosses the ball up to catch it again. "I don't want to wear someone else's shoes, really."

"You'll be much happier for that. You know, you're supposed to throw that down the lane," she says, and starts toward an empty one.

He follows her, looking at the lane they're nearing, and hefts the ball again. "I might break something expensive if I really threw it." Alec eyes the pins at the end. "You're supposed to hit those things, right?"

"Uh huh. You just roll it down the aisle," she says, stopping long enough to put their names into the computer. She will be Jaye, and he will be Date. "I can go first to show you?"

"Sure," he says, and sits down to take off his shoes and socks, putting the ball on the seat beside him. "You roll it or you throw it? Those are two very different things."

Jaye is still in her normal shoes. Hey, they have some traction. "You're supposed to roll it," she says. "Like so."

Ten seconds later when her ball is crawling into the gutter, she says, "The lane must be lopsided."

Barefoot, he perches on the back of the plastic chair to keep his feet off the floor. "Of course it is," he agrees, grinning. "My turn now?"

"I get another chance to knock them down," she says, and as soon as her ball comes back it's just as soon in the gutter. "Now it's your turn. I should complaing to a manager."

"Tough luck," he says sympathetically and hops off the chair with his ball. He eyes the pins again and throws it - evidently a bit too hard because it bounces off into the next lane and the far gutter.

Alec frowns deeply. "Wow, this lane does suck."

"Steal one of their balls. They have yours now," she says. "And you get another turn!"

"Yay!" That may be a word he's become rather fond of for some reason. Picking up another ball, he focuses and throws it down the lane. Six of the pins go down on one side and he glares at the remaining ones. "Do I get another throw, since I hit them?"

"Nope. You get scored on what you knocked down, and then it's my turn again."

And when she rolls her ball down the lane, she actually hits one. "Eee!" she says, and then composes herself. "I mean, it was nothing."

Alec's kind of wondering if he's actually supposed to hit the pins or not. "Right. I'm glad you're accounting for the unevenness now."

"So, I'll tell you a secret?" she says as she watches her second try at the pins fall into the other gutter. "I kind of suck at this."

"But you wanted to play anyway?" Alec's perplexed and grabs a random ball in a terrible yellow-green color. He's not really paying attention this time and it sails down to hit four pins off the side as he looks at her.

"It's a lot of fun if you consider it random destruction of things," she says, grinning. "Mostly the gutter."

"Okay, I can dig that," he says, grinning back, and grabs her ball as it comes up.

He throws it down the lane and hits the rest of the pins, which scatter. "Oooh. What happens when they're all down?"

"It means you rule harder than I do," she says. "That's a spare. And usually people will try to be obnoxious and high-five you as congratulations. I will do no such thing, as it is obnoxious."

"High-fives are obnoxious," he repeats, nodding. "Spares mean I rule. I think I like this game. Is there a goal or do you just keep going until you can't stand your shoes anymore?"

"I think there are ten frames, and then people usually take up the lane for like six hours or until they realize their shoes are dumb," she nods. "I usually give up way before then."

"I like that plan," he says, and offers her her own ball when it comes back. "The giving up when you feel like it, I mean."

"I think we can move on. You've been introduced. Now you can impress me," she smiles, and puts the ball back down.

"I have to put my shoes on already?" He pouts momentarily. "At least they're mine."

"I'm not going to make you," she says, and takes off her own shoes. "Tah dah, solidarity."

"Barefoot pool," he muses. "Different, new and hopefully not fraught with peril." He nods towards the tables and grins. "Shall we? (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomtownies/1034746.html?thread=43913978#t43913978)"

"So have you ever played pool before?" Alec grins, picking out a cue from the rack.

"A few times," she says. "I'm passable. I'm better at it than bowling."

"Okay, then You wanna break?" He racks the balls and slings it to the right position, making sure they move smoothly along the felt.

"Sure," she says, grabbing any old cue off the wall and spending some time putting that blue chalk stuff on the tip. She bends to shoot, and sends them flying over the table. She doesn't get any in, but that solid red one is right by the corner pocket.

Watching her break, he nods and goes to the end of the table. Alec lifts his cue and lines up the shot -- but he ignores the solid and pockets a stripe by hitting it off the opposite wall. He might be showing off a bit.

"Nice shot," Jaye says appreciatively. She is more than okay with showing off.

He grins and moves to shoot again, now a bit handicapped by having to ignore the solid ball. Another two shots go by, each a little more of a reach, and then he misses. "Damn. Your go," he says, stepping back. "Man, I missed this. Even if it's not for money this time."

"So, what's the draw?" she asks, managing to get one of her own balls in, but missing the next shot.

"The draw?" He purses his lips slightly and leans against the edge a moment as he thinks. "Dunno. It's just fun, I guess. It's kind of... controlled power. Have to hit hard enough to make it go all the way, but just enough so it won't bounce." Alec grins and leans over to set the next shot, landing it in a way that looks easy.

She watches carefully. "Maybe that's why I'm only just okay at it," she muses. "Not so good with control of any kind."

"You could learn," Alec says, smiling at her as he changes his position. Sighting down the cue, he focuses his eyesight, telescoping in to the point of impact. ...It's kind of cheating, but it makes for some impressive shots.

He shoots, but his thumb twitches slightly and he botches the shot. "Crap. Your go."

Jaye looks around for a shot, but the only easy one will probably knock the wrong ball into the hole. She goes for a slightly harder one, knowing she's not going to make it in. "Planning on teaching me?" she asks.
