Jamie walked into the restaurant with Marie and eyed the place. "Nice digs. Think they serve chili dogs here?"

"... I don't know," Marie said. She was starting to feel weird about this date. She kept telling herself it was just because she liked Jamie more than she'd like Conner or Charlie.

As Wadsworth approached them and guided them to the table, Jamie pulled back the chair for Marie to sit down on. "Here you go Marie. Grab a seat."

"Thank you," Marie smiled, sitting down. "This is a really nice restaurant."

"Yeah probably," Jamie said giving wadsworth the hairy eyeball. "I'd watch him though. He probably spits in the soup."

Marie made a face. "That's kind of a gross thought," she said, picking up her menu.

"Yeah, that's nice," Jamie replied in a tone that says he's clearly not listening. "Think they card for alcohol here?"

"I... don't know," Marie said, frowning. "I don't drink."

Jamie perked up on that. "Oh come on. Not even a little? Maybe a little bit of the moonshine your second cousin used to brew in the field behind the outhouse?""

"None of my cousins brewed moonshine," Marie said. "And we don't have outhouses."

"Surrrrre," Jamie replied, "Isn't that like a law in Missouri?"

"I'm from Mississippi," Marie reminded him. "And no, we have running water and electricity and everything. It's the twenty-first century there too."

"Oh right," Jamie said rolling his eyes. "So what's it like milking cows on a daily basis?"

Marie blinked. "I didn't live on a farm."

"No? I thought Mississippi was just some back water state with no urban areas," Jamie said totally absorbed in the menu.

"No," Marie said, getting annoyed. "Do I act like a girl who grew up that way?" she asked.

"Well if there wasn't any cows, moonshine or farms I guess not," Jamie said with a yawn as though he was bored.

"Are you feeling okay?" Marie asked, putting down her menu and giving him a concerned look.

"I feel fine," Jamie said looking around the room. "Why do you ask?"

"I don't know," Marie said. "You just seem... different."

"Different how?" Jamie asked. "Is it my hair?"

"No, it's..." Marie bit her lip. "When we talked last week, you seemed really excited about tonight. And now, well... you don't. Did I do something to upset you?"

"I don't know. Part of me wonders if all the things I've done for you are really worth it sometimes," Jamie said coldly. "I mean you would think that after running out to the cafeteria that one night to make sure you were safe would have meant something to you. I mean sure you visited me in the clinic the next day but the next thing I know you're off dating Kawalsky."

Marie blinked. A lot. And a feeling of dread settled in her stomach. "What do you mean... running off to the cafeteria to make sure I was safe?"

"You don't even remember do you?" Jamie asked shaking his head. "You were going to make dinner for everyone before we were escorted back to the dorms because of the whole thing of everyone being quiet. I couldn't find you at all and so I went looking for you."

Jamie scoffed. "I guess getting my chest sliced open wasn't enough of a signal for you."

"I did cook dinner that night," Marie said. "In the dorms, where we were safe. I had no idea..."

She trailed off and swallowed hard. "Jamie, I'm so sorry."

"Then I found out about how you didn't do anything for that poor mutant back in your hometown," Jamie said leaning back in his chair. "And I have to tell you that I'm not exactly impressed with someone who couldn't even stand up to her Mama about how to treat a simple human being decently."

Marie stared at him, her eyes filling with tears. "I couldn't," she whispered. "My parents would have pulled me out of here and then I wouldn't have been able to ever do anything good for anyone."

Jamie screws up his eyes and makes some mock-weeping noises.

"Please. Don't even start with that," Jamie said with a glare. "I know that's probably the only way you can rationalize what happened but saying that to a mutant? It's pretty much a slap in the face. I should have known better than get a crush on such backwoods hick who is also a coward."

Jamie's words made her tears go away, her expression hardening as she pushed back from the table and stood up. "I can't believe I got a crush on an insensitive bastard," she said, walking over, hand raised to slap him.

The blow went across Jamie's face and he reflexively controlled his power so he wouldn't duplicate.

When he looked up at Marie a cold grin was on his face. "Well now... if that's the type of relationship you want. I might be able to get behind this."

"I can't believe I thought you were a nice guy," Marie said, turning on her heel and storming out of the restaurant.

Jamie watched as Marie stormed out of the room and grinned at Wadsworth. "Check please."

Wadsworth does not dance.

He just doesn't.
