 | Nadia pushed a stray hair out of her face as she subtly rechecked that her firearm was secure in its shoulder holster. They'd checked several houses already, each one empty and giving whatever was in Jamie that much longer to plan.
She approached the house and glanced over her shoulder. "Remember, it's not really Jamie in there. We need to be prepared for anything, but if at all possible, we don't want to hurt him." |
 | Anakin nodded sharply, hand flickering towards the lightsaber at his belt. "Talking first. Aggressive negotiations if necessary." |
 | Kawalsky looked around, keeping an eye out for any rogue Jamies and anyone who might try to interfere with their search. "So if it's not really Jamie, why the holding back on violence?" |
 | "Because it is a part of Jamie," Molly said quietly. "even if it is bad, it is a part of him." |
 | "Why do we want him to get that part back, then?" Walter asked. |
 | "Wouldn't it be bad for him to absorb something that was posessed?" |
 | "So we unpossess him. If we'd thought this way at the beginning of the summer, you two would be dead. And frankly, I rather like my roommate. Usually." |
| The faint noise of footsteps were heard from the other side of the house. |
 | Anakin cocked his head at the sound. "This way," he said, heading towards the noise. "And be careful." |
 | Pippi nodded and followed Anakin, moving a bit to the side.
Not really a lot of ways to hide in an open hallway but at least she could move along quietly. |
 | Nadia also followed, just as quietly, scanning left and right for any sign of other Jamies. |
 | Pip slipped after Nadia and motioned for people to follow. At least, if they can understand millitary hand signals.
He pulled a pistol out, but kept the safety on. He's just paranoid that way. |
 | Anakin gave him a warning look. "Talking first," he repeated |
 | "He'd better say the right things," Walter muttered, glancing back to ensure they weren't going to be flanked by dupes. |
As the group approaches the living room they can hear soft music playing.
Just let me hold you while you're falling apart Just let me hold you so we both fall down
When they turned the corner they saw the back of a beat up easy chair with someone sitting in it. |
 | As soon as she spotted the figure, Nadia hurried forward to the front of the group, wanting to get between Jamie and the majority of the guns so they could try to keep this as civil as possible.
"This is it, Jamie, it's ov--"
She froze, her mouth open, when she saw who was sitting in the chair. . . . |
 | Tino sat in the chair dressed in one of Jamie's traditional outfits.
He was bound and gagged with a sign taped to his chest that said:
"It's a trap! Duh!" |
 | The sounds of footsteps approach the group. If they were to turn around they would probably see a bunch of Jamie's standing in the hallway behind them.
"I do believe I've got you surrounded." |
 | Nadia facepalmed.
"Of for the love of--Jamie, or whoever the hell you are, you need to stop this." |
 | Anakin was glaring at them all. "Right now," he added. |
 | Jamie gave Anakin a shark-like grin. "What are you going to do? Hit me? |
 | Anakin gave him a flat stare. "I know better than that," he replied. "But I'm sure we can come up with...other options." |
 | "We're just here to talk. But we can and will take you down if we have to. Now, tell us what's going on. Why are you doing all this?" |
 | "Haven't you figured it out yet Santos?" Jamie asked
He quickly put a dopey expression on his face. "My mother never hugged me enough as a child. I wet the bed! My father told me I was no good! WAAAAAH!"
The scary grin returned to his face. "I'm just trying to have a little fun. And I would've gotten away with it too if it wasn't for you rotten kids and that crazy little cat of yours." |
 | To say that Anakin was unamused would be understating things quite a bit. "A little fun," he repeated. "A little fun? People could have died." |
 | "My mother is some sort of KGB agent and my father is an evil bastard. I turned out okay mostly. Now get the hell out of my roommate." |
 | "Your roommate?" Jamie asked with a chuckle. "Oh he's looooooong gone sweetheart." |
 | "So who the fuck are we talking to, then?" Pip asked, his thumb on the safety of his gun. |
 | "I'm Jamie's evil twin cousin, Skippy," Jamie replied with an eye-roll. "No... wait! I ate at a haunted KFC last week and I'm possessed by the ghost of Colonel Sanders!"
Jamie held up his index finger and and waggled as he talked with a extra deep voice. "Finger lickin' good! Eleven herbs and spices! I am the devil! Bleah! Bleah! Bleah!"
He started laughing. "What? You think I'm actually going to tell you what's going on? This isn't a comic book and I'm not some serial villain who's desperate to announce his evil plan while wearing a cape."
"I am Jamie Madrox. Only better." |
 | "You are not Jamie Madrox," Molly said simply. She hated that he really did seem to have Jamie's powers though. If she hit him or any of the duplicates, there would just be more Jamie's to fight |
 | "He doesn't care," Kawalsky muttered. "We're wasting our breath. Molly's right. He walks and talks like Jamie, but he's not Jamie. That means he's not gonna listen like Jamie. So boy wonder, if you're not our favorite teeny little super guy, then what's to stop us from killing every single one of you? Because right now, no matter who you look like, you're a liability |
 | Pippi was having a similar thought process to Molly.
"I don't generally like killing people, but Charlie's got a point. If Jamie's not posessed, and he won't let us help him..."
She addressed the duplicates behind the evil Jamie.
"Is that what you want? Sure, if I smish one of you it could make more, but you'll be a smear on the floor. Does that sound like a fun thing to be? Or are all y'all just mindless automatons?" |
 | Jamie looked back at his duplicates who all started laughing uproariously at Pippi's statment.
"Do you really think you can get us all? One of us could just be hiding elsewhere in town just in case you really do manage to get us all," One of the duplicates from the back shouted.
"Not they could ever get us all," another duplicate said causing more laughter.
"Any of them carrying a nuclear missle?" yelled another. |
 | "You honestly think if you took us down Tex would let you last long enough to do anything else?" Nadia raised an eyebrow. "Because I'm pretty sure she does have a nuclear missle." |
 | "Oh, I'm not talking about getting all of you." Pippi said. "I'm talking about getting you." She pointed at one and looked him in the eye. "Personally. And you and you aaaaand..." she took her time. "You." |
 | Anakin was rapidly losing control over his temper. "So don't push us," he said tightly. "You're going to stop this. Right. Now." |
 | From the direction of the kitchen another voice is heard.
"He's right. It ends now."
Stepping into the living room is yet another Jamie dressed in a winter coat and covered with melting snow. He does not look happy. |
 | "Uh-oh!" Jamie said shaking his hands around and pretending to be scared. "Daddy's home!" |
 | Nadia swung around at the new intruder, her gun suddenly out and ready to fire. She flicked a glance between the coat-wearing Jamie and the . . . other Jamie.
She decided against going with the "but which one is the real Jamie?" question.
If it came down to it, she'd shoot them both. |
 | Pippi took in the new Jamie's coat and the melting snow as well as the evil Jamie's comment that "Daddy" was home.
She crossed her arms and waited. The exposition would come on it's own. |
 | Anakin didn't have that kind of patience. "Explain," he said. |
 | The army of duplicates all started singing the theme to an old TV show.
They're cousins! Identical cousins all the way. One pair of matching bookends, Different as night and day
They laugh alike, they walk alike, At times they even talk alike — You can lose your mind, When cousins are two of a kiiiiiiiiind! |
 | Jamie face-palmed. "I made some duplicates to go out and learn some new skills when this one-" Jamie pointed to the evil duplicate leading the group, "-decided to throw me down that crazy locker. I spent the last two weeks in a tibetan lamasery with a bunch of monks." |
 | "Oh what a sad story," the evil!Jamie said rolling his eyes. "You're breaking my heart here."
He turned to face the group standing about. "What he isn't telling you? Is that Jamie has a really perverse side of him. That's me. I'm the part that compels him to to the unexpected. The fly in the ointment. The spanner in the works."
The duplicate then pulls out a gun and points it Jamie. "The guy who's not going to go back inside him just because he made it back alive. And since you are way over there? No way are you going to be able to absorb me before you're dead. Hey... if I shoot you does it make it a homocide? Or a suicide?" |
 | "How about neither?" Nadia swung her gun to point at the other Jamie. "Hey Jamie, how much does it hurt to have one of your duplicates die? And if we get rid of him, does that get rid of the 'perverse side'?" |
 | "I'd be interested to see if more dupes pop up when a monofilament wire goes through one," Walter added. "There isn't that much energy to pick up." |

 | Jamie stared at the gun wielding duplicate. From past experience a violently killed duplicate could cause either just a small headache to sudden amnesia.
The duplicate was right in that he was too far to touch him and absorb him but his quick trip to tibet and the duplicate he had absorbed there had taught him a few things.
And it was time to try something a little different.
Concentrating hard Jamie lifted up his arms toward the group of duplicates who all started to stretch out of proportion and bend in weird directions as they were slowly sucked into himself one by one.
The memories of the what the duplicate had done began to flood into Jamie in a sudden rush.
When the last duplicate was gone Jamie stumbled a bit where he stood.
"It's over," he croaked out. |
 | Nadia kept her gun out.
And waited to see if Jamie would start twitching.
Then she might kick him.
She wasn't sure yet.
"You sure about that?" |
 | "Yes, I- Oh God. Nadia... Charlie, I'm so sorry," Jamie said with a haunted expression on his face. "I- I never realized that something like that would happen." |
 | ". . . Has it happened before?" |
 | "My duplicates have be asserting different aspects of my personality lately," Jamie said in a hollow voice. "I didn't even know I had a personality like that in me." |
 | "How do we know this isn't more smoke and mirrors?" Walter asked sternly. |
 | Jamie looked at the angry faces in front of him and swallowed hard. Where's a Jean Grey or Betsy when you need them?
"I don't suppose any of you can read minds can you?" |
 | Pippi shrugged.
"I got nothin' sorry." she said. "Anybody else? |
 | Molly watched Jamie carefully and shook her head. "Not me." |
 | Anakin nodded. "I can," he said. |
 | "What do I need to do?" Jamie asked stepping forward. |
 | "Just repeat what you said," Anakin replied, his face taking on a look of intense concentration. "About you being, um, the primary you." His eyes went flat for a second. "If you're lying, I'll know immediately. And there will be consequences." |
 | "This is me," Jamie replied seriously. "I'm the one who started this by making that thing. He threw me in that crazy locker and I just found my way back. I'm the original Jamie Madrox." |
 | Anakin nodded. "It's him," he said to the group and moved his hand away from his lightsaber. |
 | Kawalsky decided that perhaps a more scientific approach was needed.
He approached Jamie and looked him in the eye.
Then he sucker-punched him. |
 | Jamie didn't see it coming and didn't have time to duck or roll with the bunch. He stumbled back on his feet and made every effort to control his mutant reaction. Blood began to tickle from his lip.
He looked up at K and nodded. "Okay. I know I deserved that. And more." |
 | "If that other you ever comes back, I'm killing it." |
 | "He won't come back," Jamie choked out as he nursed his lip. "I won't let that happen." |
 | Kawalsky put a hand on Jamie's shoulder and straightened the other guy's shirt. "That's what I wanted to hear." |
 | "I'm sorry K," Jamie said shaking his head. "The things I did I-"
Jamie's voice trailed off. |
 | "Wasn't you. Looks like you, but wasn't you. Felt good hitting you, though." |
 | "I bet," Jamie said looking around the room at the mixed expressions on their faces. "I'm sorry. I know that's not enough for what I did but..." |
 | "You had me in a blind panic for two days. Not to mention everything else. You deliberately played on the worst fears of half the school." Nadia had not yet put her gun away, but it was no longer pointed at Jamie. "How do we know you won't do it again? It's not like you're new to pranking people, Jamie." |
 | "I'm not ever going to duplicate again," Jamie said in a hollow tone. "I'm never letting that out ever again." |
 | "You probably just need more practice." Pippi said.
And thinking about what Molly said about her date with him...
"But you should definitely cut way back." |
 | Jamie shook his head. "No. Not if something like that is going to appear again."
Jamie hung his head and looked at the ground. "If you don't mind guys? I think I'm better off here for a while. I think it's best I don't head back to campus." |
 | "Well, how long is a while?" Pip asked, holstering his gun. "Do you mean 'I need to think about this for a bit but I'll see you at dinner' while, or is this one of those 'Please stop by and bring me food every week or so' while?" |
 | "Until I know I won't hurt anyone else," Jamie said with a somber look. "And until then I'll take care of myself." |
 | Nadia slowly reholstered her gun. "I'm pretty sure I don't have to tell you what we'll do to you if you let your 'dark side' out again. We'll leave you alone, then." Nadia glanced around at the group. "Um, someone want to untie Tino?" |
 | Jamie frowned as he walked over and untied Tino from the chair as he muttered various apologies to the bartender.
Tino just glared at Jamie and stomped out of the room.
Jamie turned to the rest of the group. "I'm sorry for what I did to you all this week but I appreciate you coming after me like you did and giving me a chance. I only hope I can find a way to make it up to all of you." |
 | Nadia smirked. "When you come back to the dorms? Walter and I get the room any. Time. We. Want it. Then we might call it square." She started leading the way back out of the Huntzberger residence and back up to the school.
She'd deal with the "that really was Jamie" implications later. For now? She was just tired. |
 | A small smile crossed Jamie's lips. "You got it." he said in a small voice as he watched the group begin to leave.
When they had all left Jamie collapsed on the chair Tino had been sitting in.
He closed his eyes and went over the memories of the past week and what his duplicate had done when he was gone.
Holding his head in his hands the sound of a young man crying could possibly be heard. |
