The Perk, Tuesday Evening

With midterms on the horizon, Sam decided that some evening studying might be a smart idea. The steady stream of coffee he was purchasing was definitely helping him along.

Layla headed straight for the counter when she came in, and ordered her usual herbal tea. It wasn't until she'd taken her cup and turned around that she saw the tall boy sitting at the nearby table. "Dean?" she said, sounding hopeful. "I didn't know you'd gotten back!"

Sam glanced up and gave the girl a slightly embarrassed smile. "Sorry, I--"

"Oh! You're not Dean!" she said quickly, noticing his hair when he looked up. "I'm so sorry."

"It's okay," Sam replied, giving her a reassuring smile. "I've gotten used to this sort of thing by now. I'm Sam."

"Right, Sam Winchester." Layla smiled at him. "I know all about you."

"Okay, that, on the other hand, is something I haven't gotten used to yet, especially since I don't think I know you."

"I'm Layla Williams," she said. "And I didn't mean 'I know all about you' in a creepy kind of way. But Dean's mentioned you. Actually, both Deans have mentioned you. But most of what I've heard has come from your brother."

Sam smirked at her. "I never can be sure if that's a good thing, or a bad thing. You're his little sister, right? In that school program? He's mentioned you too."

"He has?" she asked, brightening visibly. "And yeah, I'm the fake sibling your parents never told you about."

"Hey, if you want to be a real sibling, you can have Dean. He's already been trained and everything."

"He does seem to be quite natural at the whole big brother thing. I guess I have you to thank for that," Layla said. "So, if I get Dean, does that mean you get Alec as a replacement brother? That would be fair."

Sam tried not to make a horrified face at that thought, but he wasn't very successful. "That would be considered fair if we lived in hell," he said simply. "I'm perfectly content with letting you have Dean and becoming an only child."

"Trust me, the only child thing? It's not all it's cracked up to be sometimes." Layla gave Sam a curious look. "So, I guess Evie was right about you. You really don't like Alec? She said you were saying mean things about him to her in class."

"I wasn't saying mean things," Sam argued. "I was giving honest warnings."

"Honest warnings about what?" Layla asked. "Alec has been nothing but super nice to me. He totally backed me up in class today - and okay, he was backing me up in accusing Dean of being a witch, so that might not be the best example ever - but he's really sweet."

"No offense, but he's being sweet because he's sexually satisfied," he said. "Trust me, Alec would be acting very differently if he was trying to get into your pants."

"Ha!" Layla gave Sam a smug look. "I knew it."

"You're jealous of Alec," she said, making it sound obvious. "Let me guess. He's hooking up with someone that you're interested in, and you wish they were with you instead."

Sam nearly choked on his coffee as he turned to face Layla. "Um, he's hooking up with Dean, so...no."

"...Dean? Like, your brother Dean?"

"Yup," he said, just barely keeping from grumbling. "If you want to take a minute to think about it, I won't think any less of you, because every other girl at this school seems to enjoy doing that."

Layla had started thinking about it before Sam gave her permission, so it didn't take long for her to go from shocked to confused to facepalming. "Oh my God, I'm so dumb. Why didn't I figure that out?"

"Well, it's not like they go around making out in public, thank god."

"No, I meant I totally should have figured out that Dean is gay, with the whole 'Oh, I'll take you to Homecoming and we'll make sure you look pretty and then find you a nice boy of your own' idea."
