The Causeway, some random afternoon time

After leaving the Perk and getting her things, Buffy went to the causeway to wait for her cab, sipping her coffee and ignoring her cell phone. Though this time she was trying not to already call Dawn's phone and leave spammy messages.

After having said goodbye to Buffy, Joyce headed for the causeway to wait for a cab.

Buffy saw movement out of the corner of her eye. And then she almost spit out her coffee when she looked over.

Joyce glanced over and did a bit of a double take at the young woman standing near her. She saw the woman looking back at her and smiled. "Excuse me, I don't mean to stare, but you look remarkably like my daughter."

"Um." She took a second to find her voice again and managed not to either cry or hug her. "Yeah. I met her."

"Pretty much. I saw more of the basement than I ever planned to," Joyce said tilting her head. "But as long as Buffy's not burning anything down, I can be content."

She assumed Joyce didn't know about Dawn yet. She wasn't exactly clear on whether the other Buffy even knew yet. "My sister," she answered, and cleared her throat. "I was visiting my sister."

She could have been honest, but that just didn't feel right. And maybe Buffy didn't want to deal with that. "Yeah, they had a thing," she said, blinking a couple of times. "So I came instead. She's a good kid. You'd like her."

"Yeah, we are," she said, and chose her words carefully. "We've bee through a lot together. I'm just glad she's doing okay."

"I'm sure she'll be fine here." She looked behind her back at the island. "This seems like a good place for teenagers to find themselves."

"Yeah," she said, still looking at Joyce as she gave an update on the daughter she didn't even know she had. "She's got friends and she's doing good in school and she's not in any trouble... She'll be okay."

"Of course," Joyce said then hesitated and asked, "Will you?" There was just something about this young woman a sadness that seemed to cling to her that brought out Joyce's maternal instincts.

Joyce looked closer at the young woman. There was something... She opened her mouth to say something, but was interrupted by the beeping of a cab horn.

Buffy hated everything treansportation-related right at that second. Maybe if she threatened the driver he'd go away and give her just a little bit more time.

"You can take this one," she said instead, really kind of quietly.

"Yeah," she said, because she was not about to leave her mom behind and sharing a cab would lead to her saying traumatizing for the other Buffy. "I've got some time, so."

And then before Joyce could argue or anything, Buffy moved over to hug her. "Have a good trip."

Joyce hugged her back and for a moment it was almost like... But that was impossible.

Shaking her head at the tricks a mind can play, Joyce gave the young woman a farewell smile as she stepped back. "Take care of yourself," she heard herself say. "Plugging along is all well and good but try to have a little fun along the way too."
