Luke's Diner - Rory's Birthday Party - Friday Evening

Luke closed the diner for a few hours in the late afternoon so Lorelai could decorate the diner for Rory's birthday party. It was hard to believe it had been a year since they'd done this. He was pretty sure he was still finding glitter from last year's party and, if he knew his wife, he would be finding glitter in his diner forever.

The food and decorations were ready to go at the appointed time. All they needed were the guests and the birthday girl.



[open to all. you totally received invites earlier in the week; I just completely forget to post something because I started a new job this week and am fairly brain-dead. Wait for OCD is up! Come and Party!! The birthday girl will be pinging in something after 9 EST.]

"You doubt my powers of persusaion?" he asked, pretending to be hurt. "If anyone doubts me, I'm sure I can change their mind."

"All I'm saying is people can be very dumb," she says, and then smiles a little when she says, "So how would you change the minds of the dumb ones?"

"Whatever was necessary, Jaye. Charm, seduction, bribery." He looked down at her. "You'd be amazed what I can do if I set my mind to it, and how amazing you are is something the whole world should know."

She grins. "That's it, one day you're meeting my family. It has to happen. I'll bring a video camera."

"I look forward to it," he laughed. "Do you want me to be on my best behaviour, or do you want me to scandalise them?"

She considers this. "Could you switch off between the two?"

"Of course. Although," he paused, then continued with a grin, "if I do what I'm best at, it'd probably scandalise them. So I could combine the two."

Jaye smiles. A lot. "Should I be worried I'll get take out of school?" she asks.

"Hmmm, I hadn't thought of that. Tell you what - best behaviour with your parents, and I'll scandalise everyone else." Jack smiled back at her and said seriously, "Because this place would not be the same without you."

"I'm being good," she tells him seiously. "I mean, apart from my brother seeing me halfway to a diabetic coma in the basement where I'd been camping out with my ex. A little scandal never hurt anyone."

"I completely agree. People need more excitement in their lives," Jack grinned again. "And if they won't go looking for it themselves, it's our job as caring and considerate people to help them find it."

Or, you know, it's her job as someone who's kind of forced to. Same thing. "It's our duty, really," she agrees. "We're just trying to do good things."

Jack put one hand over his mouth, trying to smother a laugh. "We're humanitarians," he managed to say.

Jaye's trying to be serious, and failing. "Our pictures might be up on a wall in some hospital wing somewhere, even. Or do you have to pay to get one of those?"

"I think you have to pay," he told her. "But there's always the Nobel prize. It's free. We could be in the running for one of those?"

"We might!" she says. "Maybe if we help more people."

First time Jaye's ever said that.

"As long as it doesn't take a lot of effort." Jack, at heart, was a minimal effort for maximum return kind of guy. "Oh, I know, I've got it. All we have to do is go places and let others bask in our inherent wonderfulness. It'll be a Nobel prize for sure."

"Isn't it?" Jack looked extremely proud of himself. "No one can resist the two of us."

"They'd never stand a chance. We'd be the goodest people there ever was," she agrees. And now she kind of just wants to stand there and pretend to look fabulous.

"Goodest? I'm not sure that's a word, but heck," Jack snickered, enjoying this immensely, "if you're as good as we are? You can invent words."

"Hey, deadinated isn't a word, but I've been using that one for months on end. Think we can charm them into letting me copyright 'goodest'?"

"You could charm anyone into anything, Jaye." Jack smiled warmly and tipped his head so it rested against hers. "Even me, and I'm usually immmune."
