Far end of the causeway and around the island - Sunday, ~3pm

Small fliers had been handwavey left in the common rooms and some of the public places in town announcing the swoop bike race this afternoon. Luckily, the weather had cleared up enough to allow the race to proceed.

A little before three, the racers met at the far end of the causeway and had a quiet discussion about the route they would take and the rules for the race. Then they each went to check over their respective bikes and make final preparations.

[[OOC: Please wait for OCD is ready! Race is between [livejournal.com profile] bruiser_in_pink, [livejournal.com profile] cameronmitchell, [livejournal.com profile] carter_i_am and [livejournal.com profile] x5_alec and will start once all racers are online. Feel free to talk to them before the start of the race though.]]

Sam was adjusting some belts and double-checking the brakes on her swoop bike. It was all well and good to go fast, but if she couldn't turn and couldn't stop, it was going to be a very short race.

Cameron was rubbing a bit of dirt off his bike. It was Joan's first race so she had to look shiny.

Alec checked his bike, then fussed over a ding near the tail.

Luke was practically bouncing with excitement as he walked out in front of the swoop bikes.

It was like the Boonta Eve races that Aunt Beru would never let him go to.

He made sure all of the riders were ready, then raised his hands above his head and dropped them down.

The swoop race had begun.

Sam thought she had a comfortable lead as she turned right and began to follow the coastline, slowing slightly as she approached the docks, then kicking it up again, glad she'd worn sunglasses to keep the sand out of her eyes.

Maybe next time she'd try goggles.

Back down the beach, Alec floored it while he was still in the lead - luckily the sand made no difference in traction to a bike that hovered.

Alec threw all caution to the wind as he held the lead and flew down the causeway. The end was in sight and he didn't intend to let anyone get past him.

Still maintaining his lead from the preserve, Alec pushed his bike to the limit as he neared the finish line and then crossed it, not even beginning to slow until he was obviously over.

Re: Listen to spotter reports from Barbossa

Barbossa was on the roof of the radio station with a spyglass, a megaphone and a couple of bottle of rum.

This should be bad.

"Good afternoon, Fandom!" he yelled. "We be meetin' up today t' watch the hare-brained antics o' Alec-who-be-not Dean, Molly, Cameron-who-be-not-Crichton 'n Sam-who-be-a-wench as they be flyin' around the island on their...swap bikes? What be a swap bike?"

A squirrel grabbed at Barbossa's leg and chittered frantically. "Swoop bike," Barbossa corrected. "Though that not be helpin' matters. As far as I can be tellin', this be a matter o' honor at stake, though I be not certain which o' the wenches be in the family way..."

Barbossa continued babbling on as the racers got into position.

Luke was very, very excited to watch this.

Really.

Just ask him.

Or watch him for more than about two seconds--the grin was a dead giveaway.

Mac knows next to nothing about swoop bikes, or racing, or any of that really. But it's a Sunday, she's bored and needing distraction to make the time until this evening pass a little faster. So here she is, watching the race in fascination.

Layla's not entirely certain about what a swoop bike is, but whatever's going on, it beats the heck out of doing homework.

Swoop bike race? So incredibly awesome. Chad was really excited to get to see this. While wondering if it would be difficult to reinforce one of those to handle someone of his size.
