Luke's Diner, Friday

Yitzhak clumped into the diner, jacket, heavy boots and all, for his first day of work. He hadn't really thought of himself as a diner sort of person, but he'd done worse before. And as far as he was concerned anything was an improvement over what he'd had to do for Hedwig. He might change his mind before long. Actually, the odds of that were very good.

For the moment, however, he was singing into a ketchup bottle as he set up the counter -- though that would change quickly if anyone walked in.

It occurred to him that maybe he should get himself a special apron. And he knew exactly what kind of apron he wanted. Oh yes . . .

Feeling peckish, Willow stopped by late Friday afternoon with the hopes of getting a sandwich and some chips.

Yitzhak set the ketchup bottle back down behind the counter and assumed a perfectly stoic, sullen air again as soon as he caught sight of Willow. He had practice at this sort of thing.

Leaning against the counter, he gave her a brief nod and raised both eyebrows as if to ask what she wanted.

"How are the sandwiches today?" Willow asked.

The corner of Yitzhak's mouth twitched in indecision as he hadn't actually tried the sandwiches yet. Then he nodded, twice this time, and threw in a thumbs-up just to clarify.

"Then a turkey sandwich with some very salty chips please," Willow said. "And a soda."

Yitzhak got to work on the sandwich (it was devoutly to be hoped that he'd washed his hands), wondering why anyone would want very salty chips. And why couldn't she have been more specific about the soda?

Just before he finished the sandwich, he turned around, held up a plate in one hand and a takeout container in the other, and raised an eyebrow again.

"Plate please," Willow replied.

Yitzhak set the plate down next to the grill with a very tiny, near-inaudible sigh and arranged the sandwich on it. He wouldn't win any points for plating on Iron Chef, but compared to the salad bar at Bilgewater's this was a work of art, damn it.

When he set the plate down in front of Willow, the chips looked kind of like what the rocky bits out by the beach would look like covered with snow.

"Very nice!" Willow said. "I appreciate the artistic effort."

A woman entered Luke's, looking around curiously.

Willow noticed the woman. "Hi! Are you new?"

"Yes, I'm Vsa," she said with a bright smiled to the girl. "I just arrived in town this morning."

"With a name like that I'd guess you're everywhere you want to be," Willow said with a grin. "Welcome to Fandom! I think we just got a handful of new people. At least there've been names on the radio reports that I haven't recognized."

"Thank you," she said, tilting her head and not understanding the joke. "Would you mind if I joined you?"

"Sure," Willow said. "The sandwiches here are pretty good, as are all the food items that aren't healthy for you but boy does the taste make up for any guilt about your cholestoral."

"This is a good place to be then?" Vsa replied, sliding into seat. She smiled at Willow. "I'm so happy to see a friendly face. I feel like I've been lost all day."

"One of many," Willow assured her. "There's also places with pizza and donuts and ice cream, all of which are of the good. Are you feeling less lost now?"

Silent Bob entered the diner and waved at the man behind the counter.

Yitzhak waved back, a little surprised.

Did he have relatives he didn't know about, or something?

Silent Bob bounced a little on the balls of his feet, looking at the specials as if deciding what to have, tossing a quizzical look at Yitzhak as if asking his opinion.

Yitzhak glanced toward the specials on the board, considering, then canted his head to one side in a manner that might have clearly implied that the patty melt might be a good choice.

Bob pursed his lips, considering for a moment before nodding in agreement.

Yitzhak flashed him a thumbs-up and got all the necessary pieces onto the grill, then turned back and leaned against the counter with a squinty-eyed look inquiring as to whether Bob had been in town long.

Silent Bob shrugged and held up a finger - one year - before wobbling his hand back and forth - on and off. Eyebrow up - you?

Yitzhak shrugged -- just arrived -- and turned to flip the patty on the grill, then did a little twirl with the spatula -- is it usually this quiet?
