Chilly Boulder Ice Creamery; Thursday Evening.

Chad stood in the ice cream shop, eying the options of flavours with a bit of disappointment as he waited for Cassie. There was no jalepeno flavour. They had that stuff all over Japan, and it was his favourite. Then again, they had some crazy, crazy ideas for ice cream there. Crazy, but tasty.

Cassie showed up, brushing off the sleeves of her sweater. She was grateful for the colder weather, since it meant that she could safely wear her suit underneath everything without the sleeves showing.

She waved at Chad. "Hi."

Chad lifted a hand in greeting. "Hey. I can still cover you for the ice cream and still have it be totally platonic, right?" He had to be extra careful with these kinds of things now.

"They don't have jalepeno," he decided to commiserate outloud.

"Yeah," Chad said, highly amused with Cassie's expression, and proud of himself for picking what seemed to be an effective awkwardness breaker. "They got the craziest flavours in Japan."

"Uhhh, sure," Chad nodded and did just that, asking Cassie about three times if he got hers right before finally being satisfied, then handed her the ice cream when it was ready. He nodded toward a table by the window. "Sit over there?"

The chairs over there seemed sturdiest.

"Yeah," Cassie said. "I guess... I don't even know where to start. Okay... how about the big thing." She took a deep breath.

"My dad was one of the Avengers. Okay, he was part of a lot of groups, but that's where he was, when... he got killed."

Chad knew he seemed to emit an aura of 'omg, talk at me' sometimes, but this had to be a new record. Cassie wasn't kidding when she said she'd start with the big guns. He looked at her for a moment before deciding how to respond. "...How'd he die?"

...At least she still knew. The death of his parents was still a mystery to Chad. He dug his spoon into his ice cream a bit, futily. "So, what happened then?"

"Well, then I tried to run away from home, met up with Kate, Teddy, Eli, and Billy, discovered my powers, fell in love with an evil conqueror from the future who wasn't evil yet, watched him go away to the future to become evil, and it really kinda went downhill from there," Cassie said.

"Why'd you quit in the first place?" Chad couldn't help frowning a little; by comparrison, what he was involved with in Japan wasn't nearly as heavy as what Teddy...and he could assume Cassie as well...had been through. But he could never imagine abandoning his little band of Soul Society invaders. He'd be on a plane back to Japan in a second if they needed him...

Maybe he wasn't getting the whole dynamic of superhero relations, but if Chad placed too much emphasis on giant soldarity, he would have never survived in Japan. He was feeling mostly confused, and kind of useless at coming up with something to make Cassie feel better. "I...don't really know..."
