Lana came into work with a mug of tea and a brownie. She straightened everything up, then settled down behind the counter with her homework and her snack while she waited for customers.

Cassie wandered into the book store, and went to the counter. "Hi," she said.

"Hi," Lana said with a smile. "I'm sure you're hearing this a lot, but you must be one of the new students. I'm Lana. Welcome to Fandom."

"I have it written on my forehead again, don't I?" Cassie said. "Hi Lana, I'm Cassie Lang. And thanks."

Lana laughed. "No, it's just that it's a small island so pretty soon everyone gets to know everyone else at least by sight."

She looked at her curiously. "Lang? Seriously?" She shook her head. "Sorry, of course, you know your own last name, it's just... that's my last name as well."

"Wow," Cassie said. "I've not met that many Langs, either. You don't have an uncle Scott or anything, do you?"

Lana shook her head. "I don't have any relatives on my dad's side, that I know of. I'm actually from Smallville, Kansas."

"And I'm from New York," Cassie said. "And... okay, importantest question. Your world have superheroes?"

"Well, we have meteor mutants in Smallville, but I don't think anybody but us believes it," Lana said a little ruefully. "And I don't think you could call them heroes by any stretch of the imagination, so no. I take it your world does?"

"Yeah," Cassie said. "My dad was one. And me too."

"Really?" Lana said, grinning. "That's cool. You should fit right in here."

"Thanks for saying so," Cassie said. "...wait, Meteor Mutants?"

Lana made a little face. "Yeah, my hometown is also known as the Meteor capital of the world. And for some reason some people who've come into really close contact with the meteors... change... And not usually for the better. They develop weird abilities and just..." Lana shuddered. "It can get really nasty."

"Yikes," Cassie said. "Sounds like maybe coming here was a good plan."

"It can get pretty crazy here as well," Lana admitted. "But overall, I think I've been safer here than home."

"Yeah, me too," Cassie said. "There's some ugly stuff back home for me, too."

Lana nodded sympathetically. "That seems to be pretty common in people who find themselves here. I'm glad to listen if you ever want to talk."

"Thanks," Cassie said. "Now... I don't remember what I came in here for."

Lana laughed. "Let me guess. You were looking for a book?"

"Oh, yeah," Cassie said. "I just don't remember what, now."

"Well, you're welcome to poke around and browse," Lana said. "It's a really great store."
