River sat up, blinking. She had been sleeping on a smelly, damp couch, covered in equally smelly and damp blankets, and she was shivering from the cold. Also, she was in the junkyard, and as she turned her head, she saw a small spaceship stting on the ground, surrounded by leftover junk and a large number of cheering squirrels.

Unfortunately River had never learnt to speak Squirrel.

As the little animals began to disappear from the site, River examined the vessel, and judged it to be functional in some sense. She'd have to ask Kaylee for a proper evaluation however.

The events of the weekend, while clearly remembered, made little sense to her. Why had she been a girl called Tess? And why had she assumed she was in a mental hospital? That last bit was the most disturbing part, even though Tess – River – hadn't really been crazy. That was just everyone else. Still, any mentioning of the c word made River uneasy.

She covered the spaceship with an old tarpaulin and put a sign on it saying:

”Stay away. Property of River Tam.”

Hopefully the squirrels wouldn't claim ownership, but to be on the safe side River made sure to collect all the drawings she – Tess – had made.
