Aereopagitica: Thursday 2-5 PM [2-1-07]

Lana opened the store on time and got everything all straightened up and ready for customers. It was a new month and Lana was looking forward to fresh starts.

The doorbell didn't ring to announce a new customer and nothing indicated the presence of anyone else in the store, but still there might have been the feeling of something else being there. There was no noise, but the shadows might have looked darker than a few minutes ago as something moved through it, drawing away some of the warmth that might have been in the room.

There was a soft rustling noise, but it might have felt like it was only imagination as if the eerie silence around was making its own sounds. Along the floor, for the barest of seconds, the shadows seemed to be moving, but that would be silly. Shadows don't move on their own.

The music echoed hallowly through the store. Suddenly there was an icy cold draft rushing through the store as if someone just threw open the door and the shadows stretched out in a rush, reaching for Lana.

You couldn't push at something that didn't really have a body and her hands disappeared into the icy black as she was completely surrounded by shadows. It dampened her scream, abosrbing it along with her warmth and energy.

The shadow rushed right through her, taking as much energy as it could before it suddenly let go of Lana. It retreated back into the shadows and left the store as if it never had been there. The radio was still playing, but Lana might not have felt the same as before.

Jim had been on his way into town after his religion class - he was going to throttle that teacher, and then the office drone who mixed up the paperwork, and wanted to complain at someone - when he heard Lana scream.

He burst into the shop at a dead run three minutes later. "Lana?!"

Jim was beside her in an instant, kneeling and pulling her into his arms. "What was it? Is it gone now?" He didn't ask if she was okay. Her heartrate was fluttering, her skin was too cold . . .

Jim frowned, trying to resettle his grip on her. Something was making his skin crawl about the way he didn't quite seem to be holding her. "Shadow creatures? Let's get you out of here and down to the clinic, have them take a look at you."

"Okay, come on." Jim carefully stood, helping her up and towards the door, his arms tight around her.

Jim, thinking she had just dropped them, crouched and picked them up. "Are you hands shaking?" he asked as he locked up behind them, the sign to closed. "Lana?"

"Okay, we can do that, everything's okay," he said soothingly, reaching out to pull her into his arms.
