Luke's Diner, Thursday

Jude's bags were packed, he was ready to go. Tomorrow morning, anyway. Toronto was no Tijuana, but it did have home-cooked meals, showers without shoes, his best friends, and the Bloor Street Cinema. So Jude was cool with it.

He's just chillin' like a moderately sinister antagonist.

Rikku found her way to the diner late Thursday morning. She wasn't bouncing, for once.

But she did flash Jude a smile. "Hey, you. Can I get some lunch?"

"Hey you back," he smiled, leaning on the counter. "Totally. Whadda ya want?"

"The pizza. And a shake." She chewed on her lower lip. "So, uh, how've you been?"

"Pretty sweet." He frowned a little - still mellowly, of course. "Hey, you okay?"

Totally having second thoughts about this boyfriend thing, you're a dope, you idiot . . .

"Yeah, you know, I'm -" Rikku stopped herself short. "No. I'm having a terrible week. I'm scared and nervous and I keep telling everyone it's gonna be okay so that I don't have to admit that I'm scared it won't be. There's -"

Okay, they weren't supposed to tell anyone. Tough.

"There's kind of a problem. A big one."

Words like 'scared', 'nervous', and 'terrible' meant that Rikku got tugged behind the counter into a hug. "A problem? Are you okay?"

Rikku wrapped her arms around Jude and settled in. She shook her head without looking up. "No, I mean, maybe? It'll be okay, I know it will, I just."

She took some long, shaky breaths, and steadied herself.

"There's ... whoa, it's a long story." She rubbed her eyes. "I don't even understand half of it. But there's a portal, and people stuck on the wrong side of it. We've gotta get them back, without getting stuck over there, too. But it gets worse, cause there's some kind of fight going on over there. It's gonna be dangerous, but we've only got till morning or we'll miss our way back." She shivered.

Jude held her tight. For all his lankiness and teenage angles he was rather good at it. He tried to follow this story and nodded in the appropriate bits. "So . . . when're you doing this portal thing? And how much of a chance do I got to see you again?" His voice was worried for her.

"Tonight. We'll be back by morning." She set her chin. "We will be back by morning. We've got weapons and fighters and I'll get my grenades back."

She looked up at him, confident. "I know how to do this. Rescue missions. I know it's gonna be okay. I just ... need to panic for a few."

She snuggled in and murmured something against his shirt that sounded very much like, "I picked a good place for it."

Jude dropped a kiss to the top of her head, cuddling her close. "You can totally panic at me any time. I'm totally useless for any fighty stuff, but I'm pretty good at doin' this."

She nuzzled the front of his shirt and sighed. "I know it's okay. I'm just scared. I mean, we did get Yunie back. But the Guado burned Home to the ground. And then we beat Sin, but ..." She shivered again. "Not everyone came back."

She is not going to cry about this, darn it.

Jude really didn't know what she was talking about. But it sounded bad and she was sounding shivery, so he squeezed her tightly, one hand rubbing soothingly over her arm. "'S gonna be fine. And it's cool to be scared. It's okay."

Rikku nodded, still snuggling into the front of his shirt. "Yeah. I know. Thanks. I just didn't want to be upset in front of everyone else. We're all worried, you know? If we just sit and panic we're not gonna get through this."

She smiled, a little shakily. "At least I don't have class tomorrow. I think I'm just gonna sleep like crazy, once this is settled."

"Sleep is good." He lifted his hand to cup her cheek lightly. "Call when you get back, though? I'll probably be at the airport or something, but I kinda want to know I still have a girlfriend, y'know?"

"It's not gonna be as late as that, I think. Probably the middle of the night. I can slip a note under your door." She giggled. "I'll put sparklies on it. I AM TOTALLY OKAY, ENJOY YOUR BREAK."

"And I'll wake up and stagger out to the bathroom and get glitter all over my socks," Jude chuckled. "Rock."

"It'll be happy glitter. Glitter of Girlfriend-Back-From-Kicking-Butt. You can totally take it with you on break." And she leaned up to nuzzle his nose with hers.

"Better than Boykissy Glitter. That's kinda hard to explain to the guys back home," Jude chuckled, nuzzling back. "Y'okay now?"

She giggled, not sure why boy kissing got its own glitter, but Fandom could be a bit weird. Understatement.

"Yeah, much better. You're really good at this, you know?"

She leaned up to give him a quick kiss, then asked, "So, can I make you cook for me now?"

"You can totally do that. Or I can totally . . ." Jude squinted one eye a bit to try and figure it out. "Uh, I can cook." He stole another little kiss. "I'm good at that, too."

Rikku laughed, and stole a final kiss. "Make me some pizza, how's that?"

"Works for me." Jude let her go reluctantly, though, ducking back into the kitchen.

Rikku grinned and returned to the other side of the counter, bounce-status fully restored. Boyfriends were awesome.

They're clean, really.
