The Perk [all morning]

Anakin was in the back corner of the Perk, holding the World's Largest Cup of black coffee between his hands and staring at the snow outside.

Maybe his arrival had gone unnoticed and he could have a quiet morning by himself to acclimate.

"She's good," John said, nodding. "There's been some up and downs but those were expected. She still likes to argue and still isn't big on talking. So, she's the same. She's doing okay. I'm sure she'll be glad to see you."

Anakin's expression stayed surprisingly neutral at that. "I hope so," he finally replied.

John nodded, smiling some more. "She will. Oh, I flew Aeryn's ship!"

Anakin's eyes lit up. "Really? How was it? Where did you go? Did you get to the use the weapons systems?"

"We went to where she's from. It was awesome. I didn't crash or anything!" It was kinda telling how excited he was about not crashing. "Aeryn ran into some trouble with her people and we went to get her. Me, Isabel, Peter Parker, Sam, and Luke!"

"Sam Carter, right?" Anakin said, eyes sparkling. "Wish I had been around."

"You would've been helpful," John agreed. "And yeah, Sam Carter. So...are you like okay and stuff?"

"I've had better...lives," Anakin admitted, "but things are starting to look up. I'm home."

"Yeah." John didn't wanna push (he'd learned that from Aeryn) even though he was curious. "This place look the same to you?"

Anakin hated lying to John. Just hated it.

He decided to tell him the entire truth as soon as possible.

Just not in a coffee shop.

"I'm a little surprised to find you all still here," he said with a wry smile. "I've been gone a lot longer than a few months."

"Oh, time's weird wherever you were?" John asked. "Well, not here for much longer. After I graduate, I'm taking Aeryn and we're going up to Massachusetts."

If Anakin looked disappointed by that news, he covered it quickly.

"I'll be here to see you walk across the stage," he said with a small smile. "Hopefully without the random gremlin attack this year."

"Well..." John paused. "Well, I might ask you to make a trip up to Massachusetts too. If you can. I'm gonna pop that one question thing to Aeryn around graduation."

Anakin's eyes widened. "Really?" he asked before he could stop himself. "It's an incredible thing, being married."

He chewed at his lower lip, trying to fix his mistake. "I mean, judging on what I remember from the Mountie marrying me."

"Yeah," John said. "She doesn't know or anything. You're the fourth person to know I'm gonna ask her."

"I certainly won't mention it to her," Anakin said. "Who else knows?"

"Angel, Rory, and Charlie Kawalsky," John said. "I think I'm gonna ask Rory to go ring shopping with me."

Anakin looked a little wistful and tried to hide it by stirring his --black-- coffee.

"I wish you the best," he said finally.

"Thanks," he said. "I'd like you to come. Whenever we have the shindig."

"Just try to stop me," Anakin said, the old sparkle back in his eyes for a minute.

"Awesome," John said, smiling back. "I should let you get back to drinking coffee, getting used to being back here. I don't want to overwhelm."

He stood and offered his hand. "It's really damn good to see you."

Anakin shook John's hand hard. "It really is," he said, smiling.

"I hope we can talk some more later," John said. "I'll tell you about the trolls and the forts I built in the library."

"I have some things I need to tell you about too," Anakin replied, eyes serious. "I'll see you soon."

"Okay." John smiled again, remembered to actually get his coffee and waved once more before heading out.

It was a good day.
