Barbossa still had a boat, the Heidy Ho III.

Barbossa still had his parasol umbrella to keep him from getting wet. The rain would remove that all-important layer of grime he had going.

Most importantly, Barbossa had a plan. And a sign.

He didn't mention that he would be singing and they would be paying him to stop.

He put on his most innocent expression--which wasn't terribly innocent--and practiced yowling singing opera as he waited for customers to slog on up.

The two squirrels already in the stern wearing little striped costumes like gondoliers rolled their eyes.

River knew she was very intelligent of course, but so far she'd had no inclinations to rob the bank. "Have ye tried?" she asked the pirate. The accent was contagious.

Barbossa grinned. "I be preferrin' me treasure more out in th' open," he said. "I'll be wanderin' around later t' see what be washin' up on shore."

The boat turned onto Griffin Way and they floated past Venture Industries. "Thar be another man in serious need o' a lay," Barbossa commented.

Lei? Luna remembered that word from Arts and Crafts with Mister Dean Professor The Tick. "Is there a flower shop still in the town? Perhaps we could make him one."

River had the advantange of understanding both meanings of the word, even if she'd got the 'lei' meaning by proxy from Luna's mind. Combining the two would be interesting though. "Who should we send to deliver it?" she asked.

Barbossa burst out laughing. "I be sayin' some young matey, but I be not knowin' one I dislike that much. Any suggestions, wenches?"

"I only know a few young men on the island." Luna thought carefully through those with whom she was familiar and came up with one who came to town with some frequency. "I could ask John Connor, perhaps? I believe he is likely to be in town often."

River didn't know John Connor, but was certain that Luna hadn't quite caught the pirate's meaning. She smiled sweetly. "I be not knowin' him, but I be sure he'll fit the job description."

Pirate speak was a strange thing.

Barbossa threw back his head and laughed. "He be perfect," he decided. They rowed past the post office and Barbossa gave the merpeople there a cheerful wave.

Luna made a mental note to look into that later.

So far, she was enjoying the boat-ride and decided to ask, "do you know any other songs?"

River also waved to the merpeople, and when Luna asked for more songs she looked at Barbossa expectantly. "Pirate songs?"

"O' course!" Barbossa said, row a little slower. "Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life fer me!"

Not knowing the song, Luna just repeated the pirate, only much higher and with a British accent, "yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me!"

River joined in, singing something completely different. It worked quite well together.

They rowed past Caritas, still singing, where they were greeted by the pungent smell of wet zombie.

"Ewww," said Barbossa eloquently.

River knew the smell of corpses, but not of corpses soaked in water. It was not an attractive sensation. She made a face, feeling sick.

Barbossa rowed faster. "We be almost there, fortunately," he said. "Here be the Perk. Wave t' the otters, wenches!"

"Do you suppose that they are real otters, people who used to be otters, otters who wished they were people," Luna asked as she waved, "or just extremely lost?"

River waved. "Even otters can be lost," she said, remembering the cows on Serenity. "When in the wrong place."

"I be not askin' how they be gettin' thar," Barbossa admitted, "but they be puttin' rum in me coffee this mornin', so they be nice...whatevers...regardless."

River gave him a solemn look and nodded. "That's kind of them."

"Is rum an important part of coffee consumption?" Luna asked.

"It be the most important part," Barbossa declared, pulling up in front of Wonka's. "Here we be!"

Luna hopped out of the boat into about a foot of water. "Thank you!"

Barbossa held out his hand expectantly and named a ridiculous price for his service.

River fell silent as she certainly didn't have that amount of money on her.
