The Park, Saturday afternoon

Parker managed to find a raft and pole her way down the streets after Gun Club, and finally ended up in the park after a certain amount of bumping into trees.

There was a castle in the middle of the park.

"So, yeah." Parker stared at it a moment, all shiny sandstone and emeralds and shells. "That's new."

A dolphin splashed by, and managed to knock Parker's pole out of her hands. Parker started cursing in Russian, not wanting to swim back to the dorms.

Another splash.

"Hey, you dropped this."

Parker stared, and then grabbed the pole. "Thanks. Uh. Welcome to Fandom?"

The mermaid tilted her head and looked surprised. "No, it's Poseidon's kingdom. So welcome to you!" She smiled cheerfully. "Did you come to speak with our king?"

"No, I just -- wanted to see what was up." Parker got a better grip on the pole, and asked, "So you guys are staying? Can I ask why?"

"A groundhog killed some of our fish." Mer-girl gave Parker a Very Serious Look and pushed blue hair back from her forehead. "So Lord Poseidon has decided to give dolphin rides to whoever brings him one! You want to ride a dolphin, don't you?"

Splash!

Which didn't actually answer Parker's question. "Not really. I assume they've all moved to high ground. Or swum away. And you're invading because a groundhog killed some fish? Doesn't that happen every day?"

"We haven't invaded! Just moved in." Blue-hair propped her arms up on the raft, blinking at Parker, and slapping her tail back down on the surface of the water. Parker flinched. "Since most of this island is covered with water now, it's ours, and we're going to stay here. Don't you like it? Lord Poseidon got you a raft, after all."

"And it's a swell raft. But we'd seriously like to not be underwater." Parker shook her head. "This isn't a good idea. You don't want to claim squatter's rights here. There's other stuff that might come out. Mummies. Trolls. Zombies. Vampires. Uh. Evil shadows...."

Mermaid-chick giggled, and another dolphin swam by, doing a front flip out of the water before diving back in. "You're funny!"

Parker gave up. "Mind if I just keep poling around, admiring the architecture?"

"You're one of us now, even if you're deformed," the mermaid told her seriously. "So stay as long as you like!"

And with another flip of her tail, she dived under the water and headed back toward the castle.

"Deformed my... right."

Parker went back to carefully making her way through the park. And keeping a much tighter grip on her pole.

Annette was lazing along, floating on an inner tube. She was coping with the water as well as anyone she supposed and ooh! Pretty castle!

Splash!

Two dolphins jumped out of the water, showing off, then flopping backwards in front of Annette.

"Next show at 4:15!"

That kind of made her sit up, well as best she could in an inner tube. Dolphins! Annette loved dolphins! And they were playing!

Did they just speak to her?

A blue-haired head broke the surface of the water in front of her, smiling cheerfully. "Hi hi! Dipper and Kipper will be back real soon! But they have to warm up a little more before the next bit."

"Wha? Uh," Annette's eyes grew wide and she stared even as she waved in a friendly gesture. "You have pretty hair." A mermaid! She always wanted to be a mermaid! "Dipper and Kipper, okay, thank you!"

"You're welcome! And welcome to Poseidon's kingdom! You haven't seen any groundhogs, have you?" The mergirl preened a little, drawing her fingers through her hair. Natural highlights. Ha.

"Poseidon's kingdom...wow...it's beautiful!" The groundhogs threw her. "Uh, no. But I think if they haven't found higher ground by now, then-" she lowered her voice and sort of whispered, "I don't know how long they can swim."

"So much the better! Our lord is very displeased with them." The mergirl swished her tail, and tilted her head again. "But if you find one and bring it here? You can get a ride on Dipper or Kipper!"

The larger dolphin leaped out of the air, did a forward somersault, and splashed back into the water.

"Why? What did they do?" Annette was fascinated by her tail and just everything about her. "I can? But...that might be impossible, especially if they have all passed away."

She gasped as a dolphin leaped and flipped and splashed, and she grinned wide, nodding her head at the girl. "Do you know where I might be able to find one?"

The mer-girl looked very thoughtful, and said, "They killed some fish, and Lord Poseidon says that that's enough reason to retaliate." She nodded solemnly. "And, um. I don't know. They're ground-things. Maybe they're in the ground?" She opened wide eyes at Annette. "But I'm sure Kipper will be happy to let you ride her if you come back tomorrow!"

Dipper and Kipper jumped up, spun around and around and around, and then dived down, down, the wake causing a wave to hit Annette's raft.

"But would lord Poseidon accept a dead one?" She asked, holding to the sides of her inner tube. "I can come back tomorrow! I'm sure I can!"

Dipper and Kipper caught her attention then and she tilted her head, watching them in wonder. "What are they doing?" But the wave from their spinning hit her tube and she was rocked backwards, making her hold on better and more tightly.

She could swim if she got knocked off, but she had no idea what all was lurking beneath the surface. That was sort of a scary thought.

"Surely!" Mer-girl had no idea. But it sounded good. And he was a good lord, so maybe he would. "And they're practicing for shows! We do this a lot. They've gotten really good, haven't they?"

She followed Annette's raft, and steadied it with one hand. "Oopsy! They get a little carried away. I feel so sad for you people without fins. How do you ever learn to swim?"

"Good! I'll...try to find a dead one. Hopefully an alive one, but a dead one too just in case. And yes, they're very good. I love dolphins!"

She smiled down at the fishy-girl with the pretty blue hair. "It's okay, I like the waves, but thank you." She said when her tube was steadied. "Oh, I know how to swim very well! I really enjoy it." She nodded emphatically.

"But you have those leg-things! And you can't breathe, I heard?" Mer-girl looked very worried. "You must be very tough." She shook her head, and then giggled as Kipper swam by and splashed her again. "But maybe Lord Poseidon will have pity on you and give you a tail."

"My leg things move like this," Annette made scissor motions with her fingers. "And well, we can't breathe in the water unless we have help with a tank of oxygen and a breathing mask, but we can hold our breath under water. Some of us longer than others."

Annette giggled too, thinking her too cute, but whoa - "What? What do you mean give me a tail?"

"Don't you want one?" Mer-girl blinked at Annette, seeming mildly surprised. "He made the castle arrive here, and he's helping us all settle in. Maybe if you ask he'll give you a tail. After all, he is a god."

"Can I...um, meet him? Now?" Ohh wow, this would be too incredible! And a tail? How in the world would that work? Fins too?

Mer-girl looked over at the castle, and whistled.

A seagull came flying down from one turret, and landed in the water in front of her. She squawked at it a moment, then it batted at the water with its wings, and took off.

It came back a moment later and made a jeering sound before flying away.

"Awwwwww. He's taking a nap."

"Oh." Annette looked a little crestfallen. "But I can come back tomorrow, right?"

"Sure! I'll be here!" Mer-girl perked up a bit, and that would be when Kipper and Dipper did a spectacular arcing dive over Annette's raft. "Eee! I'm sorry! I gotta go corral them, they're getting too frisky!" She backed away from the raft, and gave Annette a sweet smile. "See you tomorrow!"

And she dived down to follow her dolphin buddies.

Annette was almosty giddy. She clapped and waved bye and returned the sweet smile. "Tomorrow! I won't forget!"

And she laid her head back on her tube and couldn't keep from grinning.

Tomorrow was going to be great!
