River walked around the Acorn, carefully inspecting how the ship had survived the flood. Surprisingly well, it seemed. River found a few crabs hiding under the fuel tank, and removed some seaweed, and threw out the furniture which had started to smell oddly. She made a mental note of finding new furniture.
But the ship itself was intact, there seemed to be fuel left, and they should be ready to go.

Pippi flounced up with a rucksack stuffed full of all sorts of things that one needs for adventure.
"Hi!"
|
moonbrain_tam |
River waved and gestured proudly at the Acorn. "Hello! Here it is!"
|
strongestgirl |
"She's beautiful!" Pippi clapped looking the ship over. "Does she have a name?"
|
moonbrain_tam |
The Acorn," River replied. "Built by squirrels after all." She gestured for Pippi to come inside. The main space inside was the cargo hold, and with the furniture thrown out it looked quite empty, and right now also quite damp. "Need to redecorate," River commented.
|
strongestgirl |
Pippi looked around and nodded appreciatively.
"We can fix this up real nice."
|
moonbrain_tam |
"You'd help?" River asked hopefully.
She pointed at the stairs leading up. "This way to the bridge."
|
strongestgirl |
"Wull of course." Pippi nodded following River to the bridge. "If you've got a ship, you might as well travel comfortably."
|
moonbrain_tam |
"I agree," River said. "Need stylish interior."
She sank down in the pilot seat. It was soggy. "Hm," River said.
|
strongestgirl |
"Maybe we shoulda brought towels."
|
moonbrain_tam |
River nodded, frowning. Then she shrugged. "But we'll have to get wet instead."
|
strongestgirl |
"A little water never hurt anybody."
|
moonbrain_tam |
"True."
River switched the engine on and it eventually came to life. "Ready?"
|
strongestgirl |
Pippi plunked down into a seat and gave River a thumbs up.
"Ready!"
|
moonbrain_tam |
River grinned back at Pippi. The ship slowly lifted off the ground, the engine choking a little. Having to concentrate on piloting to keep the Acorn reasonably steady, River asked Pippi: "Where do you want to go?"
|
strongestgirl |
"Let's take her for a three hour tour around the island!"
|
moonbrain_tam |
"Right."
River turned the ship, setting course out to sea. It didn't fly as steadily as she liked, and the engine made odd noises occasionally. She assumed the former was due to lack of practise and the latter due to flood water. She was getting practise now. The flood water was trying. Hence everything would be fine.
|
strongestgirl |
"Wahoooooooooooo!!"
|
moonbrain_tam |
River giggled. "You want to try flying it?" River asked Pippi.
|
strongestgirl |
"Oh can I really?" Pippi clapped and bounced. "...How do the controls work?"
|
moonbrain_tam |
River showed her the basics. "Very sensitive. Be careful."
|
strongestgirl |
Pippi nodded and took hold of the controls in front of the co-pilot seat.
Pulling back gently to make the ship climb higher, she giggled.
|
moonbrain_tam |
River made an enthusiastic sound. "Not too steep or we'll go down quickly," she said, joining in the giggling.
|
strongestgirl |
"So. No loop-de-loop." she said nodding. "...Barrel roll?"
|
moonbrain_tam |
"Might be possible," River said hopefully, her eyes glittering with excitement.
|
strongestgirl |
"Never know until we try!" Pippi grinned easing the controls to the right gently at first, then sharper and sharper.
|
moonbrain_tam |
The water rushed past far below as the Acorn began to twist and turn unsteadily.
|
strongestgirl |
Pippi continue to push the controls to turn the craft more and more.
Finally, she gave the controls a final shove.
|
moonbrain_tam |
The Acorn spun around and so did everything inside it. Seat belts were good, but didn't help against the things that changed position due to gravitation.
"Ouch!" Some kind of metal tube hit River on the head.
|
strongestgirl |
Pippi reached up and pulled her rucksack off her face as she righted the ship and attempted to set it back on a steady course.
"Okay... Before we try that again, we're going to have to batten down a few things." she grinned.
|
moonbrain_tam |
River frowned, scratching her forehead. "I agree." Her face lit up. "But now we know it works!"
The engine was beginning to choke alarmingly.
|
strongestgirl |
"Yea it was...." The choking noise started.
"Um... Maybe you should take the controls back."
|
moonbrain_tam |
River did take the controls back. The engine still choked. River's eyes widened. "Short of fuel. We were supposed to have enough left."
|
strongestgirl |
"Maybe the barrel roll burned more then it shoulda?" Pippi suggested. "Either way, I think it might be best to get closer to the ground! ...errr water."
|
moonbrain_tam |
River agreed and made a sudden dive, levelling up the spacecraft just before reaching the water surface. She was frowning now. "Should try and get back to the junkyard."
|
strongestgirl |
Pippi nodded and settled back in her chair.
"You'll get no arguement from me."
|
moonbrain_tam |
Keeping the Acorn just above the water, River turned and headed towards the island again. The engines were beginning to sound really worrying.
|
strongestgirl |
Pippi buckled the safety belt.
|
moonbrain_tam |
But the junkyard proved to be too far away. The Acorn touched the water, then hit the sand of Galactica Point and spun around before the engines died.

Pippi scrambled out plopping down next to the open hatch and wiped her brow with the back of her hand.
"Wphew!"

"Does it take liquid fuel?"

She shook her leg. It didn't happen often that she got hurt and it always annoyed her. "No heavy objects loose while doing experimental flying."

"Is there a bucket in there somewhere?"

Cleaning supplies gushed out at her, knocking off her feet in surprise. She sat up in the pile, displacing the bottles and scrubbers that covered her.
She had a bucket on her head.
"Found it!"

Rooting through her ruck sack, she headed out of the ship and towards the ocean.
"Okay, now we need a bucket of water."

"Okay, where's the gas cap on this puppy?"

She dumped the entire contents of the glue tin into the tank and then poured in the water. Twisting the gas cap back on, she jumped over to the side and rocked the whole ship back and forth to mix the stuff in the tank up better.
"Okay!" Pippi said clapping her hands together. "Lets fire her up and get her back to the junkyard for repairs!"

She grinned back and got to her feet, limping back into the Acorn and up to the bridge. "No barrel rolls this time."

"We'll have to bake some... Or stop at Jeff's. Maybe they have some fresh."
