Aereopagitica; Friday [ 10-5 ]

Alphonse arrived a little early to make sure he got the preperations correct and that everything was in place. So far, so good, and now he was really looking forward to doing this job.

He grabbed a cup of cocoa for himself, took a seat behind the counter, and while it was slow decided to read through a book of his own.

[ will be around for about an hour, then I have to head into work for a bit. I'll be back in the evening though \o\ ]

Millie popped in to say hello. "Good morning, Alphonse," she said cheerfully. "Don't worry, I'm not here to check up on you. I just wanted to say hello and let you know I'll be around, so if you need anything just give a shout!"

"Morning, Miss Millie," Alphonse greeted, setting down the book for a moment. "Okay. I'll let you know if I need any help."

Chris wandered into town, looking for a birthday gift for Willow. And he noticed the help wanted sign. He didn't need to work, Grandpa's allowance took care of his needs, but working in a bookstore was his geeky dream come true.

"Hello," he said, approaching the woman who seemed to be in charge. "I'm interested in a position."

"Truly?" Millie asked. "Why that's wonderful! I'm Millie, by the way. Have you ever worked in a store before?"

"Chris," he replied, holding out his hand. "And, no. I've never had a job before, though I used to help my grandpa with odd jobs around the club our family owns."

Millie shook his hand firmly. "That's wonderful. A club? I'm not sure I know what that is. But you seem like someone I would get along well with and I must admit it would be nice to have someone here who is comfortable with magic."

Chris blinked. "How do you know I'm comfortable with magic?"

"It's quite clear that you have some powerful magic," Millie said with some surprise, then looked a bit chagrined. "Oh dear, I'm sorry, is this something people don't speak of here? I know there are worlds where it's not looked upon as a good thing."

"No, no, it's fine," Chris assured her hastily. "I just... was surprised that you knew without me telling you. I'm half witch, half white lighter."

Millie looked surprised again. "You seem to have far greater than witch level abilities, but again perhaps that's different here. Or perhaps it's this... whitelighter? part of you. I've never heard of that."

"They're guardian angels for witches," Chris explained.

"How fascinating," Millie said thoughtfully. "I know we don't have anything like that in the series worlds. I would love to talk to you about that more sometime."

"That would be great," Chris said, eager to learn as much about magic as he could.

"Marvelous," Millie said with a smile. "Oh yes, a job. Well, I'd love to have you working here. We're open 10-5 on weekdays and 10-2 on weekends. At the moment I have openings all day Sunday and Monday and from 1-5 on Wednesdays. Any of those work for you?

"I can work Sundays," Chris said. "I have classes on Mondays and Wednesdays."

"Sundays would work perfectly," Millie said with a smile. "I live in the apartment upstairs, so I won't be far if you run into any problems. We've been setting out biscuits and stuff for tea and cocoa for the customers. Everything you need is in the backroom. There's also a refrigerator there which I'll keep stocked with sodas and juices and snacks for you and the other employees. Help yourself to anything you'd like."

She thought for a minute. "Oh yes, feel free to do your homework and be comfortable if the store's quiet. I don't mind that at all. And if you can come up with a new name for the store... I'm still looking for one a little more people friendly than Aereo-whatsit."

"Thanks, Millie," Chris said. "I actually need to find a birthday gift for a friend, but I can start working this weekend."

"Well, if you're looking for a book of some kind you're certainly in the right place," Millie said, beaming. "I can get you books from any of the known worlds. And this weekend would be the perfect time for you to start."
