Post Office, Tuesday (3/27)

There's a ... ritual, of sorts, that many people go through upon being confronted with an unquestioningly obedient servant. Having satisfied himself that Gladys didn't feel mistreated, Sokka was... enjoying himself.

"Sit!"

"Stand!"

"Touch your nose!"

"Stand on one foot!"

"Spin around!"

"Hop!"

Mel felt stupid even trying to send the letter (http://cantjossme.livejournal.com/10229.html) off but...

Eh. What the hell.

"Hey Sokka. Is there anything you can't make that thing do?" she asked referring to Gladys.

[Now with better English.]

"'That thing' is a she," Sokka declared imperiously, "and her name is Gladys. And she's awesome." He looked at Gladys and thought a moment. "Do a dance?" he commanded. He was running out of ideas.

"Sorry Gladys," Mel said with a wave and then turn her attention back to Sokka.

"Okay, here's the deal. I've been having problems trying to communicate back home. Any letters I send get sent back and any e-mails get bounced. Think you can try sending this out?" Mel asked as she held up her letter.

"Uhhh..." Sokka looked hesitantly towards the back room. "Suuuure..." he said, and took the letter.

He approached the Sorting Engine cautiously and dropped the letter in the hopper. And crossed his fingers. And waited.

The letter disappeared off to MailWorld, and everything seemed fine.

Sokka breathed a sigh of relief and started walking back to the counter -- at which point the Sorting Engine spat the letter back out, at high velocity, at the back of his head.

"OW!"

He picked it up and looked at it -- inexplicably, it now had
"***ERROR INSUFFICIENT CHEESE***
+++ REDO FROM START +++"
stamped across the front of it.

He handed it back to Mel and shrugged. "Uh... Looks like maybe not?" he said.

"Cheese?"

"Hey, don't ask me. I just work here."

"What happened to that 'Neither Rain, Nor sleet, Nor Whatever' toy?"

"Toy? What toy?" Sokka blinked at her, confused. "No, that's what we do." He straightened up, looking all important. "It's the Post Office Way." He slouched again. "But, this is only my second day. And it's never done that before. How about this?: I'll refund your postage and put this over in a special spot for the Postmaster to look at."

[[Frell you and your gorram future slang!]]

Evie bounced in and looked around with interest. "Sokka! Hi! Oooo." She blinked at Gladys. "Hello?"

"Evie!" Sokka waved to her. He straightened his spiffy hat and gave her a rakish grin. "I am here for all your mail-related needs," he told her.

"Hello," Gladys said to her, taking advantage of Sokka's distraction to do a little sweeping.

"I like your hat. Unfortunately, I just need stamps. Jonathan adores all the American ones," Evie confided. She waved at Gladys, and tilted her head. "Hello?" She leaned closer to Sokka and whispered, "Why were you ordering-- him-- her-- the nice golem around?"

"Johnathan?" Sokka asked, his eyes narrowing.

"Hello," Gladys replied to her. "Do You Need Assistance?"

When Evie leaned close, Sokka whispered back, "Because she doesn't mind and it's awesome."

"My brother. He's in Egypt, working for the consulate," Evie said, bouncing a little. Was that just a *teeny* bit of jealousy? "Ohhhh. She doesn't?" She looked askance at Gladys, then politely said, "If you could point me to the postal stamps, it would be greatly appreciated. Ma'am. Sir. Ma'am?"

Brother. Okay. That's awesome.

Gladys obediently pointed at Sokka, who said "Oh, yeah!" and dug stamps out from under the counter.

"There are books of regular stamps," he began, going all Vanna White. "But those aren't interesting. We also have sheets of other stamps, in all sorts of designs (http://shop.usps.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductCategoryDisplay?catalogId=10152&storeId=10001&categoryId=11834&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=11826&top_category=11826)."

He pulled out a few and displayed them proudly.

"Oooo! Polar year! That's where you're from, isn't it? Your sister said," Evie said, looking hopeful. "And you do that very well," she complimented him, smiling in amusement. "What else do you do here? Aside from tell Gladys what to do?"

"Yeah, we're from the South Pole. On a different world. It's pretty exciting there." Sokka was bragging.

"Here, I... Uh." He leaned in close to Evie again and whispered, "I think Mr. Moist lied to me about the fun and adventure."

"Oh, no!" Evie bit her lip, looking sympathetic. "Not really? No couriering, or, or, daring deliveries?" She looked thoughtful. "Do you have wee tiny penguins there?"

"Not yet," Sokka siged. "But I have hope." He smiled at her.

"Well, there are penguins -- real penguins, with four flippers and whiskers -- but they're all about this tall." He gestured with his hand about four feet off the floor.

Evie beamed back at him, and bounced up on her toes. "Maybe you'll have to deliver a packaged by swinging in on a vine. Or a curtain!" It really has been too long since she got to go to the cinema.

"Ohhhh. I wish I could see them! Perhaps some day, though. Although the Fandom versions were quite amusing. They did tapdances in the hallway."

"Maybe someday," Sokka sighed wistfully. "Maybe someday."

It wasn't really clear which her statements he was responding to.

When Sokka's done with her. He'll be gone from 3 - 4pm, so you can have her all to yourself, you jealous silly person.

Yep. There they are.

Yeah.

Uh-huh.

SOMEONE SEND A LETTER ALREADY!

Any problems with trying to send a letter that can't get delivered? Maybe get totally spit out by the machine?

"Can't" get delivered? Do you mean that you don't want it to, or that the addressee is dead/unreachable? In either case, I'm sure we can work something out. :)

If nothing else, it can always just be lost.

Basically Mel is stuck in Fandom with no way to communicate with her own timeline kind of thing. Basically the letter would just bounce back or do whatever you'd like it to do.

We'll say.... Sokka can look at it funny and toss it into the Sorting Engine, and it can spit the letter back out. Plus humor.
