The beach: Tuesday, around noon

Maybe it wasn't quite summer, but it was warm, the sun was sneaking through the clouds, and the intermittent showers had obviously decided the beach was wet enough already as they were nowhere to be seen.

Jack led River down onto the beach, his arms full of blankets, towels, a picnic basket and other assorted beach going necessities. "This is going to be fun. It's been awhile since I swam in the ocean."

River followed him, carrying another basket. "Yes. Too cold during the winter. Would have caught a cold or worse." She grinned up at him.

Reaching the beach, she quickly kicked off her boots and enjoyed the feeling of wet sand under her bare feet. She drew a semi circle around her with her toe, then looked straight at jack, eyes glittering.

Jack set his stuff down, and grinned back, slowly meandering over to her and deliberately stepping over the line, stopping with his body just brushing hers. "That would kind of spoil the fun, wouldn't it?"

"It would," River agreed, gently placing her hands on his chest. "Good turning into bad. Besides, I prefer the warmth." She took a step back and began to pull her dress over her head.

"So do I," he said, watching her, something tight inside him letting go at being there with River, with the ocean stretching out before them. He didn't have to do anything except just be. "You wearing anything under that dress?" he teased.

She laughed back at him. "You know what I usually wear under my dress," she teased back. Tossing the dress on to the sand she stepped closer again. "Buffy told me I needed this for swimming," she said gesturing at her swimsuit. "When we went shopping." It looked more like Buffy's style than River's.

River reached up to kiss Jack. "If you don't hurry up I'll be in the water before you."

"I do. I like what you usually wear," he kissed her back, fingers lingering on her skin, "but I like this too." Stepping back, he stripped down to his swim suit and flashed her a grin. "Race you?"

River didn't reply, just returned the grin, then turned and ran towards the water. when the water reached to her thigh she dived into an oncoming wave.

The water was still cold and made her skin feel numb. She closed her eyes, enjoying the sensation for a moment, then burst to the surface and looked for Jack.

Jack had been right behind her, a little slower than usual because River in a swimsuit running right in front of him was more than a little distracting.

He dived in, ducking under an incoming wave, and surfaced just behind her. "Woosh, chilly!" he gasped, but it was nice, crisp and cool against his skin.

River turned, a playful look in her eyes. Not replying, she sank beneath the surface again, reaching out to grab Jack around the waist. The warmth of his body felt good, constrasting against the chill of the water. She tugged, trying to pull him down with her.

Laughing - at least until he was under the water - Jack pointed his toes and let himself sink down, one foot touching the sand, and pulled River against him. His eyes were closed, and he couldn't talk, but he knew it didn't matter. The water feels amazing. You feel amazing. It wasn't cold anymore, and River was a point of heat against him.

For once, River wished she could reply in the same way. She enjoyed this too, the sea, with Jack close. Pressing her face against his chest and leaning close, she hoped that would convey some of that. Then she ran out of air and pulled them both towards the surface again.

Having to breath was such a pain, and it wasn't the first time he'd thought that. He broke the surface with a gasp, flinging his head back and brushing water out of his eyes. "It was nice down there," he said, fingers brushing her stomach as he treaded water.

River wiped the hair out of her eyes. "No place I'd rather be right now," she said after clearing her mouth of seawater. His touch, although soft, and having him close, made her shiver, and not from cold, so she pushed away, lying back on the water, moving just enough to keep herself floating.

Jack agreed with the thought, and he kept treading water, watching River. "You look gorgeous out here." Not that she didn't look gorgeous everywhere, but floating in the ocean, her spreading out around her, she looked right. Jack easily floated closer and pressed a kiss to her shoulder, tasting salt.

River turned her head to look at him, and a wave washed over her face, making her blink and cough water. She finally laughed. "Always manage to distract me." She turned placed an arm around his neck and wiped his hair out of his face with the other hand. She rubbed her nose against his. "You're beautiful, Jack. Always keep me both in the present and both want I'd want to do with you."

He kissed her, carefully and softly, brushing one hand down her back, then pulled away slightly and smiled, scissoring his legs harder to stay above the waves. "I'm glad, River. I just want you to be happy." She didn't make him ache, make him hurt, the way the others sometimes did. "Things are simple with you."

"Simple with you too. No impossible expectations." She moved closer and kissed him again. "Love... seeing .. you smile. Feeling... you're... happy." She spoke the words between kisses, then laughed and pulled away, diving beneath the surface, away from him.

It took him by surprise and he'd sunk a little farther under the water while she kissed him, enough to get slapped on the face by a passing wave. Spluttering, he grinned and dived after her, risking the salt sting and opening his eyes to follow her.

River had kept her eyes closed, diving blindly into the water. When she felt the sand under her fingers she turned, opened her eyes and looked for Jack.

Jack was right behind her and he stroked through the water until he could dig his fingers into the sand, sparing a brief moment to hope there was nothing bitey under there. Can't get away. He grabbed a rock to anchor himself and pulled himself close enough to kiss her, the sensation strange with water between them. Not going to let you go.

Wrapping a leg around Jack to anchor herself to him, River held his head between her hands, returning the kiss. The air in her lungs was running out and the water tried to pull her away, yet she felt safe in the moment.

Jack kissed her, the currents flowing around them, moving them through the water, until the lack of air was becoming a serious issue. River. Breathing would be good about now.

River pushed away from the sand, still holding on to Jack. She reached the surface gasping for air, before bursting out laughing.

Jack tried to breathe a bit too soon, and he coughed several times before he joined her in laughter. "What was that you were saying about me being a distraction?" he asked as he swam up behind her.

River leaned her head back and looked at him. "That you are one? Want to hear it again?" she teased him, grinning.
