There were too many new presences on the island--they sang and ricocheted through the Force with their nerves and confusion.

Which was why Anakin was sitting crossed-legged on the ground by the pond trying to find some peace through meditation.

Qui-Gon had decided to walk through town before heading down to the cabins. The park drew him as green spaces usually did and he wandered down its paths, making note of future places to meditate.

He slowed when he came to the pond and saw another Jedi sitting there.

Anakin knew that presence in the Force. It had made an indelible mark on him.

So his eyes shot open as he expected to see the wise older man that had changed his life forever...and rested on the Padawan in front of him.

Huh.

He blinked his eyes and nodded. "Padawan," he said.

Qui-Gon bowed respectedly. "I was unaware that there were other Jedi here," he said, warily pleased.

"There are a few," Anakin replied with a small smile. "Welcome to Fandom, Qui-Gon Jinn."

Of all sentence he thought he'd ever say...

Qui-Gon raised an eyebrow at his name being used. "Have we met before? If so I'm afraid I don't recall it..."

"Your future is my past," Anakin said with a small smile. "I'm Anakin Skywalker."

Qui-Gon's eyes lit up a little at that explanation. "Master Yoda told me there people here from different times. I just never expected it would be someone from my future."

"I won't ruin the ending for you," Anakin told him, then waved towards a spot of grass next to him. "Sit," he said. "What brings you to Fandom?"

Oh, this was weird.

"Master Yoda thought it was best if I get away from the Temple for a little while," Qui-Gon said, folding himself gracefully to the ground across from Anakin. "My first master left the Order recently and... Never let it be said that Jedi don't gossip."

"They're worse than the Senate when given the proper stimulus," Anakin said, making a face.

And deliberately not asking what happened to Qui-Gon's master--he had more than enough Dooku memories and none of them pleasant. He didn't think he'd be able to keep the scorn from his voice and the Padawan in front of him had probably had quite enough of that sort of thing in the Temple.

"Fandom is a good place to rest from that," he said instead. "Many of the students are already somewhat familiar with the concept of Jedi."

"Because of you." It wasn't a question.

Anakin nodded. "I've been here for...a while. I teach flight in the summer and Ethics during the school year," he said.

"Ah. I may have to take the Flight next term. It's not exactly my strong suit and I probably could use the practice."

"It's helpful for making...strategic withdrawals on those rare occasions the more traditional negotiations don't stick," Anakin said, eyes twinkling. "Obi--" he cut himself off, shaking his head. "You'd do well to learn," he said instead.

"I know the basics," Qui-Gon said. "It just doesn't come naturally to me like it does to some."

Anakin nodded. "It's a matter of surrendering temporarily to the Living Force," he said. "Many Jedi don't like to relinquish that kind of control." He shrugged. "For me, it's more natural than breathing."

"I'm fine with surrendering to the Living Force," Qui-Gon defended. "Just... it's easier with living things than it is with machines." He regarded Anakin. "I look forward to seeing you fly."

"And I'm the opposite," Anakin admitted with a smile. "The living things seem to take particular glee in trying to vex me. Master Yoda said it was because I had no patience."

"I think Master Yoda has said that to every Padawan he comes in contact with," Qui-Gon said. "We all seem impatient to him."

"That's because he's approximately a billion years old," Anakin said, eyes twinkling. "He's got amazing reflexes with that stick of his, though. I was smacked a lot as a Padawan."

"I think he considers it a sort of punctuation," Qui-Gon observed.

Anakin chuckled. "You're probably right." He thought back to what Obi-Wan used to tell him about Qui-Gon "...he's taken over your training now that Dooku has left?"

He hit the word "Dooku" a little hard to be completely neutral.

Qui-Gon frowned a little at the tone in Anakin's voice on his former Master's name. "Yes," he replied. "I think he was the only one willing."

"Your master's choice to leave is no reflection on your worth as a student," Anakin said firmly, staring straight into Qui-Gon's eyes. "He has his own destiny to fulfill, but yours is with the Temple."

Qui-Gon nodded. "That's what I came to realise. Eventually. It wasn't easy though. I've been with Dooku for eight years and he's always been good to me."
