Luke's Diner, Saturday

Jude ~~remembered to open the diner on Saturday for once~~ had been, admittedly, reluctant to come to work today. There was the, of course, yay-we-beat-the-bad-guy feelings, but then there was the fact that his girlfriend still couldn't walk on one ankle.

So he was using his powers of awesomeness to create a solution for Rikku that provided food, company, a comfortable seat, and available ~~man~~ boyservant.

Luke's is open, if a bit distracted.

Hi, Jude!

Rikku had one foot propped up on a few pillows and was fussing about it. "It totally looked better this morning and you know it."

Jude padded over with a bag of frozen peas and just shook his head.

"I don't want any peas, I ..." Rikku looked confused. "Oh. Okay. Yeah."

And set back to her main point. "Really. Don't worry about me. It's just a little swollen and you should totally work and not fuss over me."

She bounced. As much as you can bounce when you've got one leg propped up. "Does this mean you'll make me lunch?"

Jude carefully packed the swollen ankle with the veggies. "Even if it's swollen I'm totally allowed to fuss. And it's not really busy today." He leaned over and kissed her forehead. "Lunch, snacks, whatever you want."

"Okay, you can fuss a little, then." She nodded like she was being generous, not at all swayed by the kiss on the forehead and how cute it was when he fussed, really, and then squeed. "Oooooh. A milkshake? Because I love your milkshakes. And do you have those kebab things? Because those rock."

Jude chuckled mellowly. "Are you going to stay there and not move?" he tried to be stern.

"Yes. I suppose. For now." It was an attempt at pouting, and not a very good one. "And I need to stretch it sooner or later and I might be totally fine walking on it now and it was just sore or something last night."

"Sit still and I'll make you a milkshake," he promised, heading for the counter. "What kind? Or want me to experiment?"

"Oooh, I like your experiments!" She bounced a little in her seat. "And is there pizza, too? I'm really hungry all of a sudden."

Rikku was trying to sit still. She just wasn't any good at it.

"Experiment and pizza," he nodded to confirm the order, setting to work. "That's probably 'cause you were really busy yesterday."

Rikku nodded. "It's tiring work, saving the world," she said. Maybe not as lightly as she would have said a couple days ago, but it's got some bounce to it.

"Well, you would totally be my hero if you went to the clinic and got your ankle looked at." He gestured at her with a pizza cutter.

Rikku laughed. "Oooooh. You're a tricky one, aren't you?"

And shook her head with a sigh. "Jude, they've got, like. Real injuries there. 'Whoops, my ankle turned all funny' is not an injury. It's a bruise. I mean, I've got an ugly one on my other leg where he kicked me, do I need that checked out, too?"

It occurred to her right after she said it that this was quite possibly not the best line of reasoning to be taking.

"Yes," he replied simply.

"It's a bruise," Rikku repeated with a bit of a sigh. "I'm fine, honest. I don't wanna go ... you know. Waste everybody's time. It's not important."

Jude sighed and brought her her milkshake - orange sherbert with vanilla ice cream, in the right proportions to taste like a creamsicle - with a straw and a kiss on the forehead. "I know what you mean. I'm just worried, okay?"

Rikku sipped, and then giggled. "Oooh! I like! I was expecting another chocolatey thing. But it's all orange." That got a grin.

"Yeah, I know. I'm just ..." She lifted a shoulder. "Look, I'm staying off it, okay? That's something, right?"

Jude was pleased that she liked it.

"It is. And I'm glad. So don't mind me, okay? Well, yeah, mind me 'cause you should listen to me about feeling better."

"Okay." Rikku nodded. "Okay. I'll totally not mind you and mind you and sit here with frozen peas on my foot and this milkshake is really good. They should put that on the sign or something. Luke's Diner: Now with Jude-Shakes."

"You could have frozen corn if you want," Jude grinned. "And if you can talk the boss into the sign, I totally wouldn't mind."

"No, I like the peas. I mean, I don't like 'em, but that's the point. Saves someone else from having to eat them." She laughed. "And I don't think I've met Luke. Uh, unless the boss is someone else and it's just called Luke's for whatever reason. But that'd be kinda silly, huh?"

Jude shook his head. "Nah. Luke hired me, but then he left and, uh, I can't pronounce the new guy's name," he said sheepishly.

Rikku giggled. "See, maybe that's why it's still Luke's. Luke is totally easy to pronounce. If it was Some-guy-with-a-weird-name's Diner, Now With Jude-shakes? Maybe people wouldn't stop in."

"Maybe they would. My milkshakes bring all the boys to the yard." He managed to deliver this completely deadpan.

Rikku bit her lip and smothered the giggle quickly, and pretended to consider it. "Well, I've never made milkshakes before. So I guess they'd be better than mine?"

Jude nodded seriously. "Damn right they're better than yours." He considered. "I could teach you . . . but I'd have to charge."

Rikku modded with permission.

I am tired and haven't managed to get all the sparkly eyeshadow off from RHPS last night.
