The Park [Tuesday Early Afternoon]

After finishing his explosions workshop and lazing around in his cabin for awhile, Gavin found his way to the park and, after checking to make sure it was free of stupid gremlins (he was checking everywhere these days) took a seat on the grass and leaned back to let his face catch the sun's warmth.

He wasn't asleep, honest. Not really.

Inara approached quietly, in a pleasant mood after spending part of the morning with Zoe. She grinned as she spotted Gavin, and stood so she was standing directly in the sun's path, casting a shadow over him.

"The sun's gone." He opened one eye and smiled. "I didn't know this planet's sun disappeared randomly," he teased.

"It's a little known scientific phenomenon," she sat down on the grass beside him, chuckling quietly, "but I read about it. Quite fascinating, really."

Not really.

"And you made it come back," he said when the sun reappeared. "Almost like magic. How are you?"

"I'm doing well, thank you." She blushed slightly under the sun and his attention and slipped her shoes off to curl her toes in the grass, enjoying the crisp texture. "And you?"

"Doing okay," he said, still smiling. "Workshops all right? Did you have to yell at that one teacher yet?"

"No, but there is a student I may end up hitting, if I ever figure out who he or she is," she admitted.

"What happened?" he asked, sitting up and frowning.

"We were supposed to be starting a flame war, and things got out of hand," she clenched her jaw. "I was called some disparaging things, but I have difficulty explaining the difference between being a whore and being a Companion."

"He called you a whore?" Gavin asked, thinning his lips.

"I don't know if it was a he or she," Inara said quickly, but not answering the question.

"Doesn't matter," he said quietly. "Someone in your class thought it was all right to say that to you. Narrows it down."

Inara ducked her head. "Whoever it is might not be the only one to hold that opinion."

"I don't," he said, shaking his head. "Whoever it was shouldn't have said that to you. It's just...I don't know. They shouldn't have."

Inara leaned over to kiss Gavin on the cheek in thanks.

She shouldn't be surprised to see a blush after that and he ducked his head to smile a little.

"Let me see your hand for a minute," he asked after he'd finished being shy for the moment.

"Why?" She asked, blushing a bit on her own as she held her hand out.

Because he was a dork.

He took her hand and laced their fingers together. "So you don't trip over the grass."

Yes, he knew they were sitting down. Shhh.

"I feel so much safer now. Thank you." She didn't mind the dorkiness--at least it was honest.

"Welcome," he said. "How'd you do in flight class last week?"

"Before or after Artoo wanted to get out and push and I hit the asteroids?" Inara asked, laughing.

"That good, huh?" he asked, laughing. "That's why I fly. What we flew in class, that's what I fly back home."

"I'm still learning!" She said, a bit defensively, "And I would love to fly with you sometime."

"I was just teasing," he said quickly. "Just teasing! You should fly with me sometime. Even if it's just in that simulator thing. I bet I can ask Professor Skywalker for permission."

"He said I could get help from him anytime, so maybe we can combine them and be extra convincing?" She offered.
